What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that teaching and learning are highly dependent on the relationship between the teacher and the student. I start to get to know my student so that I can better relate to them and determine the best teaching style to use while tutoring. I teach by relating the material back to real life so that the student is able to understand the importance of what they are learning.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In a typical first session with a student, I will start by getting to know them through their hobbies and interests. I will then start in on material to gauge what they know and what they may be struggling with. I will also use various teaching methods to see which they relate to most.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I can help a student become an independent learner through showing them how to better utilize their book and help teach them how to take effective notes that can be used for studying.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I help students stay motivated through positive encouragement for great work.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I take the time to teach that skill or concept a couple of different ways to see if their difficulty in learning just stems from the teaching method. I also will relate it to their life so that it can be better understood.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I help students who are struggling with reading comprehension by reading it with them and asking them questions about the reading so that we can work through the material together and help show them what they should be looking for.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I've found that when working with a student, it is best to provide a lot of encouragement and help them see the material in various ways.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would help a student get excited and engaged with a subject they are struggling in by relating it to their interests and hobbies.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I will use test questions and sample readings to be sure that a student understands the material that I'm teaching.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I build a student's confidence in a subject by increasing the difficulty of the questions as we work longer and longer together so that they can see the progress they make in the material.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I will use example problems and utilize the notes and textbook of the student so that I follow along with what their teacher is instructing. I will also utilize documents that show how applicable the material is to the real world.
