I'm a recent graduate of Harvard's Graduate School of Design where I received a Master of Landscape Architecture. Prior to getting my master's degree, I studied Environmental Policy and Urban Studies at Colorado College. I have a diverse, interdisciplinary academic background which has instilled not only academic curiosity but an appreciation for ways of learning and teaching. As a tutor I'm interested in helping students develop ways of learning that are true to them. During my education, I've learned how important it is to understand what works for me as a student, which isn't always exactly what is prescribed in a classroom. This challenge requires creativity and adaptability, both of which are factors that really excite me and drew me to tutoring.I have experience working as a teaching assistant at Harvard Graduate School of Design and as a elementary school tutor at Harlem Academy in New York.

I firmly believe that the vast majority of students who believe they are "bad at math" have tragically internalized this identity without true justification. I have personally seen students of mine shed that persona and it is a special thing to witness.

I graduated from Harvard University and have always had a love of stories, leading to a major in Folklore and Mythology, a cross curricular degree that combined classes from the Social Anthropology, Fokloristics and English departments. As a certified teacher, I have had extensive experience tutoring students in a variety of contexts, from my work with a community-based organization in South Africa, to prepping middle school students for high stakes testing in the rural south, to coaching high school seniors prepare college statements. I am particularly passionate about language arts and I hope to help learners realize the beauty, complexity and joy of reading and writing well. I graduated from Harvard College with High Honors in Romance Languages and Literatures, having worked mostly on contemporary Brazilian poetry but also having done graduate work in Spanish. After finishing at Harvard, I moved back to the Valley of the Sun to be with my family and started work on a M.S. in Psychology with a focus on Psychology and Law. My current academic interest is how non-native English speakers interact with the justice system here in AZ. Law school is in my futuremore than likelybut I'm enjoying my time at home and getting to explore questions of interest to me.My tutoring expertise lies mostly in the domain of standardized test preparation (SAT, PSAT, ACT, LSAT, GRE, AP). I studied by myself with only the study aids that are available on the market for every standardized test that I teach. While this isn't a great strategy for everyone, I find that my knowledge of the tests and the best study materials/methods is far deeper after having gone through all the work by myself than if I had had help. I know what doesn't work, but more importantly I know what does. It's my job to make your life easier by sparing you all the frustration I experienced!Standardized tests are a game. Working on a graduate degree in Psychology has certainly helped me get into the minds of the psychometricians who make these tests. There are a number of strategies beyond just the test material that I work on with those whom I tutor to ensure their best performance come test day. It is my goal that each of my students believes that he couldn't have performed any better when he finishes the exam. The worst feeling is regretting your performance. With adequate preparation and the right techniques, every student can be proud of how she tested!

After completing my undergraduate degree, I worked full-time as a post-baccalaureate researcher at Columbia University's Astrophysics Laboratory in New York City. Currently, I'm working toward a PhD in Exploration Systems Design at Arizona State University. I first starting tutoring in high school and have continued for nearly a decade since. I have tutored many students across all levels of mathematics from the elementary to the undergraduate level. Additionally, I have tutored several students in astronomy at the undergraduate level. Calculus is my favorite topic to tutor, as I find the concepts to be incredibly fun to both learn and teach. In addition to tutoring, I also worked as a multivariable calculus teaching assistant for the Harvard Mathematics Department. I firmly believe that anyone can learn math. There's no such things as a "math person." It's just a matter of finding the right teacher. I received an MFA from Harvard, a double BA from the University of California, Berkeley, graduating Summa Cum Laude at both schools. At Harvard I studied acting at the American Conservatory Theater/Moscow Art Theater Institute, and at Cal I studied English as well as Theater & Performance Studies, receiving scholarships in both departments, including the Departmental Citation (highest honor) for my honors thesis and production of Poet Laureate Robert Hass's "Time and Materials".As a tutor, I have worked for six years helping students with all SAT sections as well as English language and writing skills. I spent several years working as a Writing tutor at UC Berkeley's Student Learning Center, where I helped both long-term and drop-in college students with all sorts of writing help, including essays (literary, scientific, critical, sociological), applications and admissions statements, and creative writing. My last year there, I served as Senior Tutor, engaging with other tutors and mentoring new tutors to discuss and enact unique teaching pedagogies. In addition to the SAT and Writing, I tutor PSAT, basic Spanish, AP English, College Essays, voice and speech, Grammar, and Reading Comprehension. I love tutoring! It is hard to pick a favorite subject, but I have a special place in my heart for the art of writing - the sharing of a story, the power of an argument, or the creation of a world from a special perspective. I have worked with kids in 3rd and 4th grade through middle school, high school students (academic and pre-college focuses), and adults of all ages learning English, working on speech, or developing Reading and Writing skills. Additionally, I am fluent in Spanish and have tutored Spanish speakers.I firmly believe that students are not mere vessels for knowledge, but rather human beings with individual goals, hopes, and dreams. These are integral to their academic and pre-college work, since excellent work derives from one's sense of self, motivation, and experience. To this end, I always engage with students as collaborators. I work with them to develop "Sarah's SAT Prep Plan" or "Mike's Writing Workshop", as opposed to just a general course of study meant for anyone. Identifying specific problems and moving toward strong goals, I make sure students achieve changes that they can understand and internalize. Improvement is wonderful, but if students also know WHY a skill or approach is important, they will keep it with them for life. The artist's life is my bread and butter. I am a TV, film, and stage actor, and piano, trumpet, and guitar-player, and longtime creative writer. In regards to writing, nothing has been more educational and fulfilling than having my work published and produced. I used to run track and cross-country, but I am a little rusty these days. I like ballroom dancing, reciting Shakespeare, discussing films and plays, writing musical theatre, and singing. I enjoy good food, especially pasta, "Mad Men" (really, anything vintage), and New York City! As a tutor, I look forward to sharing my passion for life and learning with you!
