I am a graduate of Calvin College, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in French, Spanish and Linguistics. Upon graduating, I spent time teaching both French and English as a Second Language in Ecuador, where I had the opportunity to work with several different age groups in a university setting. Since returning to the United States, I have taught test-taking skills and strategies to students preparing for the TOEFL exam as well as English as a Second Language to immigrant learners in Brooklyn, New York.I recently graduated from Rutgers University with a Master of Arts in Literature in Spanish, where I continue to teach Spanish as I work toward completing a doctoral degree at the same institution. While I tutor French and English in addition to Spanish, Spanish is the language I'm most passionate about both because of my fascination for Latin American literature and culture as well as the fact that students are able to begin practicing the language as soon as they walk out the door and into the Spanish-speaking community. This real world application is at the heart of my teaching philosophy, and I have found that students learn best through a communicative task-based approach that frames language instruction in real world contexts through which students can relate to their own life. When teaching literature and culture to advanced students, this real world focus comes across through my enthusiasm and passion for the experience of life through another world - the world through Spanish. In addition to teaching and tutoring, I enjoy reading all kinds of literature, playing chess, organizing activities at my university, spending time with friends and riding my bike around New York.

I earned my undergraduate degree in Literature from Yale University and my Master of Arts in Teaching with a specialty in Secondary English from American University. I taught middle school reading for three years. I taught a number of students with unique needs such as English Language Learners, students with learning disabilities, and students needing remediation. My favorite part of teaching is getting to know my students as learners and tailoring my instruction to meet their needs. In my free time, I like to read novels and literary nonfiction. I enjoy spending time outdoors in nature, traveling in Spanish-speaking countries, and making crafts from recycled materials.

After my college graduation, I taught 4th grade for a year on the Navajo reservation in New Mexico through Teach for America/AmeriCorps. As part of my work, I taught an after-school reading program for 3rd-5th graders through Save the Children. I currently work for an academic program at a local university. While I am comfortable tutoring many subjects, I am especially passionate about English, organization, study skills, and standardized tests. I am someone who spent my summers in high school reading for fun, and who looked forward to taking the ACT. I consider myself a lifelong learner, and would love to share my passion for education with students! Some of my goals consists of being a college professor, and writing a novel or 2. I currently have my bachelors in Interdisciplinary Studies, and will be working towards my masters in 2024. I am most passionate about Reading, Writing, and literature. I also have experience with small group, one on one intervention, and standardized test prep. I have been informally tutoring my classmates in French since I began studying the language, about six years ago. I would help them understand grammar and pronunciation mainly in the beginning stages of learning the language. I was hired last year as the French tutor at my college and I have experience tutoring students in beginning and intermediate level French. I am very comfortable with the language and my experience has shown me what does and what does not work when tutoring a student. I have also attended several lectures regarding the ways in which students learn, which I incorporate into all of my tutoring sessions. I believe that my general experience studying and teaching a foreign language has prepared me to be able to tutor Mandarin Chinese also, as I have been studying that for three years. As for French tutoring, I tend to focus on classwork if a student is struggling with a specific area in their current lesson. With more advanced students, I like to hold conversations with them to expose their linguistic ability and help them speak the language more comfortably and naturally. I recently had the privilege of taking two years of cultural immersion courses at the Alliance Franaise de Chicago, and I have been to France multiple times, so I am very familiar with French and Francophone culture. I sometimes like to explore current events in the French world if I am having a conversation with a student. I can teach lessons around French and francophone film, literature, and music. In Mandarin, I have experience speaking with friends and acquaintances completely in Mandarin. Living in Chicago has given me access to Chinatown, a wonderful neighborhood overflowing with rich Chinese culture that I have been exposed to since birth.Currently I am a sophomore at Beloit College, majoring in International Relations and French, and minoring in Mandarin Chinese. I am working towards an undergraduate degree, which will be followed by a graduate degree. I am anticipating studying abroad in the future in both China and France in an effort to use those languages to study International Relations. Outside of school, my favorite thing to do is travel. There is no better way to understand another culture than to visit it. I also like to cook, take pictures, and explore Chicago.
