My tutoring career formally began six years ago--since then, I have been gradually developing my own personalized collection of tips and tools for effective learning in a large range of disciplines.My journey began in high school as a tutor for a handful of middle school students struggling with mathematics. The private sessions instilled within me an appreciation for the power of conceptual connections. I found that each individual student's network of knowledge was vastly different, and so the connections they drew in order to arrive at solutions differed as well. It became my goal and pleasure to guide these students along their own intellectual pathways towards a better understanding.During my undergraduate career at the University of Texas at Dallas, I continued to fortify this skill. Employed by the on-campus Student Success Center as both a Peer Tutor and Supplemental Instruction Leader, I led sessions for advanced engineering mathematics, statics and dynamics, mechanics of materials, physics, and calculus. Through these programs, I was introduced to new methods for helping students attain their own understanding of course materials with only minimal guidance from myself. These methods relied upon the fact that, oftentimes, students already possess the foundational knowledge to arrive at correct conclusions--they simply lack the confidence and/or the roadmaps to get there. That's where I come in.After finishing my B.S. in Mechanical Engineering last May, I moved back to the Raleigh-Durham area to continue my education at Duke University for an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering. As aforementioned, much of my tutoring experience has been in STEM fields (calculus, physics, chemistry, etc.)--but as a student who has prepared for, agonized over, and ultimately suffered through the SAT and GRE standardized tests, I would love to be able to impart my own knowledge and strategies for these as well.If it's nice out and I'm not tutoring or buried in my textbooks, you will either find me rock climbing at the Triangle Rock Club, playing Ultimate Frisbee, working on my car, or enjoying the great outdoors (beaches, mountains, forests--you name it, I love it). On rainy weekends I enjoy tinkering with computers and old electronics, playing Pokemon, or picking at my guitar.

When I began college, I remember struggling with tests and with time management. Being a premedical student from the very beginning meant that I was forced to learn very quickly how to overcome these challenges. My attempts to become a successful student were filled with perseverance, which became the theme of my professional endeavors. After working extremely hard to be accepted into my top choice medical school at Duke University, I again found myself in a situation where I felt under prepared and lost. Through much work and research about study skills, proper test preparation, and test taking strategies, I eventually have reached a level where I am comfortable assessing my own test readiness and how to best strengthen my academic weaknesses. I believe that through my own personal experiences, I have become a stronger life-long learner and I plan to use these skills throughout my career as I plan to stay in academic medicine to further the field of medical education.

In my time as a tenured Associate Professor at Stetson University, Iwas available during 6 weekly office hours, and often more than that when necessary (I never turned astudent away). As a graduate student at Columbia University, my tutoring most often involved pre-medicalstudents who wanted to deepen and polish their chemistry skills. I love this type of one-on-one work withpre-health students because Organic Chemistry is typically the most difficult of the four pre-healthcourses; I count it as an honor to instruct future professional chemists, doctors, veterinarians, physicianassociates, and the like, and to prepare them for an intense exposure to biochemistry and other coursesin their respective professional schools. This is not to say that I only enjoy working with pre-healthstudents; I am happy to work with anyone who needs special help in organic chemistry.

I started tutoring fellow students when I was in high school. When I got to Duke, I had the opportunity to tutor at a local middle school. I have tutored a variety of subjects, but my favorite subject to tutor is math because of how much I enjoy it. Before joining Varsity Tutors, I tutored the LSAT for a private company, both as a classroom teacher and in one-on-one tutorials. Building off that experience, I will be working for Varsity Tutors, helping people prepare for the LSAT as well as the SAT and the ACT. I have really enjoyed my experience assisting students in test preparation. In my experience, students first approach tests in an ad hoc fashion, and often with a fair bit of trepidation and hesitancy. I find it tremendously satisfying to help students conquer those initial hurdles and gain a feeling of mastery and confidence. I am patient, and I encourage my students to be patient as well.
