I am currently studying English literature and secondary education at Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina. I love Game of Thrones, Warhammer, and YouTube channels about world travel and languages. I am currently learning Spanish and Arabic, and I hope to be fluent in both someday. My biggest bucket list item is to travel to Bolivia and see the Salar de Uyuni. I have had extensive experience as a tutor of all ages, from helping kindergarteners learn to read and write English to working with adult students on their term papers for college. I am available to tutor reading, writing, basic Spanish, SAT/ACT prep, algebra, geometry, and study skills. As your tutor, my goal is to provide you with the tools to catch your own mistakes rather than just correcting them myself. I want to help you grow as a learner so you can use your own strengths to master the material.

I graduated from Concordia University, Nebraska with a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education with concentrations in English and Spanish. Ever since my study abroad experience in Costa Rica in college, I have been very passionate about teaching and continuing to learn Spanish. I taught high school Spanish levels 1-5 for five years, and I loved it. After five years of teaching, I had the opportunity to move to Lima, Peru to work as a missionary. My Spanish ability and knowledge of the Latin American culture grew tremendously over the three and a half years that I lived there. While I was there I taught English as a Foreign Language to Peruvians. I've had the opportunity to travel to several Spanish speaking countries including Spain, Argentina, Peru, Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama, and the Dominican Republic. When I teach or tutor, I always try to meet the student where they are. By that I mean that I evaluate their learning style and do my best to cater to it. I try to move fast enough that the student is happy with their progress, and slow enough that they don't feel discouraged or overwhelmed. I think that my excitement about Spanish and Spanish-speaking cultures is good learning motivation as well. I like to be creative with lesson plans, and I am a very thorough teacher.

When the teacher's role is to guide, providing access to information rather than acting as the primary source of information, the students' search for knowledge is met as they learn to find answers to their questions. For students to construct knowledge, they need the opportunity to discover for themselves and practice skills in authentic situations. Providing students access to hands-on activities and allowing adequate time and space to use materials that reinforce the lesson being studied creates an opportunity for individual discovery and construction of knowledge to occur.

I am a highly-motivated teacher with experience across many educational settings, from coaching and outdoor adventures to classroom teaching and special education.I started my teaching path in 2010 when I began working in outdoor education. With the outdoors as my classroom, I spent several years teaching outdoor science classes, leadership seminars and adventure activities to students from a wide variety of backgrounds. Working in the outdoor ed field was a great way to develop communication skills and teaching methods that are applicable to students with unique learning styles. In 2014, I became the Director of an Outdoor Education program - developing curriculum for our science classes, teaching and training a professional staff, and implementing a special education vocational program. Although I loved my experience directing a program, I realized that my passion is in working directly with students and helping them build the skills and relationships that will lead them to success.I have now moved my classroom indoors and I currently work as a learning specialist at a High School in East Boston, MA. My role is teaching students with learning disabilities and my primary subjects of focus are math and chemistry. I also love the Spanish language and teach it whenever possible.

I am a Teaching Fellow and graduate of Appalachian State University, where I earned my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 2007. Graduating Summa Cum Laude, I also received a concentration in Spanish. After graduation, I taught third and fourth grade in North Carolina. After that, I taught second grade at A.B. Combs Leadership Magnet Elementary School, where we received the honor of the #1 Magnet School of America. I have deeply enjoyed my six years in the classroom. It's a true joy to watch students fall in love with learning!Throughout my professional experience as a teacher, I have had many opportunities to teach students with a huge range of abilities, including academically gifted, ADHD, dyslexia, and autism. My commitment to maximizing individual student performance and inspiring students' interest in learning drives each tutoring session. Although I love teaching all subject areas, developing children's written expression is a real passion of mine. Since Florida Standards expect students to explain their thinking in both reading and math, it is extremely important to excel in writing. The use of visual aides, manipulatives (tangible objects for students to use while learning), and easy-to-learn test-taking strategies are appropriate and highly effective for my students. I truly believe that making education fun and enjoyable for young students is the key to producing self-motivated learners. In my spare time, I love to be outside! I have recently moved to Florida and enjoy running, biking, swimming, and paddleboarding. My husband and I have a daughter who is now crawling, so much of my day is spent chasing after her! I also love to read and go to the library to find new books. When we have the time, our family enjoys attending sporting events, and we are excited to see a Tampa Rays game soon!
