College English Tutor • +40 Subjects
I am thrilled to offer tutoring services because I deeply enjoy helping students find ways to personally connect with given subject matter. Working one-on-one with students allows me to tailor my approach to individual learning styles (aural, logical, verbal, visual, kinesthetic, or, as is most often the case, a combination). Not only does focusing on learning style lead to effective learning and retention, but it also helps students recognize how they best learn so that they can utilize those strengths and methods in other scenarios as well. My goal as a tutor is not just to see students through one class or one specific assignment, although, of course, those situations do come into play. Rather, my overall mission is to help students build skills, confidence, and self-awareness so that they can continue to succeed and evolve as learners for the rest of their lives. As a teacher with a background in the humanities, I specifically bring to the table in-depth knowledge of how to structure and execute written compositions and public presentations. I love working with students to organize their ideas so that they can present their thoughts, insights, and opinions in the best possible light. Very often, a students difficulty with writing papers or preparing presentations has nothing to do with a lack of information or ideasit simply has to do with not knowing how to arrange or communicate those ideas. As a tutor, I can help students develop techniques for creating outlines and structuring their thoughts so that they are able to handle composition and presentation assignments with confidence.

I am a Los Angeles area native, and hold a JD from the University of Virginia School of Law, as well as a B.A. in English from Tulane University in New Orleans. I have been a California licensed attorney since December of 2011, and currently practice full-time as a Law Clerk for four Los Angeles Superior Court Judges.Since I finished my undergraduate degree, I have tutored many high school and college students in essay writing and test prep. In particular, I love helping people improve their writing. While there are undoubtedly many great tutors in the area, I believe I bring a unique perspective with my legal writing experience. With this background, I strive to help students not only improve their academic performance in the short term, but also develop the skills they will need in their professional careers.I am available to tutor on weekday afternoons and evenings in and around the Pasadena area where I live with my wife and two children. I also may be able to tutor students near the Downtown area, where I work.Thank you for reading my profile. I hope to work with you in the future!

I am Joseph and am originally from LaGrange, Georgia. I received my undergraduate degree in History at the University of Georgia, where I was enrolled in the Honors Program. While at Georgia, I spent a semester abroad at Oxford University in England. I went on to study Law at the University of Mississippi, where I earned a JD in 2012.My love for history as well as my on-campus involvement during college and during law school have given me the opportunity to teach one-on-one in nontraditional settings. In my role as an interpretive volunteer at the Atlanta History Center, I have enjoyed being able to answer visitors' questions about what life was like during earlier eras. Likewise, as a new member educator for my college fraternity, I worked closely with a pledge class as they learned the history, traditions, and expectations of our organization.I hope to impart my enthusiasm for learning to your son or daughter in our tutoring sessions. I will work to break down difficult areas into manageable blocks, building confidence and knowledge that together will lead to success. I will also work to develop individualized study strategies that work for your son or daughter.I look forward to meeting with you to plan for your student's academic excellence!

I graduated from Augustana University in Sioux Falls, SD with my Bachelor's Degree in English Literature and Religion/Philosophy in 2019. I then continued my education and completed my Masters of the Arts in Humanities degree (with a focus on English Literature, again) from the University of Chicago in 2020. I am currently an English, Social Studies, and Spanish I Instructor at a 1:1 school for middle school and high school students with learning differences. I was previously a college advisor for a nonprofit organization that assists college students from low-income backgrounds. I've been tutoring writing through various platforms since undergrad and I love that it allows me to practice teaching and communication skills as well as help others through the learning process. I love encouraging students to develop their own writing and feel confident in their written communication skills. I believe everyone is a writer and has the power to communicate their own unique ideas effectively. While I mainly tutor writing, I am also eager to expand my teaching skills into more English Literature and Book Club subjects to share my passion for and knowledge the power of reading. My ultimate goal is to become an English Literature professor and I'm so grateful to grow as an educator with Varsity Tutors! I look forward to meeting and working with you!
