My name is Leyat. I have been teaching for ten years in both the Elementary Education, Middle, and University level. I love to cook, bake, and travel. I have musical and enjoy the outdoors. I look forward to helping you succeed in your academics.

I am an Old Dominion University graduate with a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering Technology. I am also currently working to get my certification in teaching. I was a teacher and teacher assistant for a private school in Virginia for about 2 years. During that time I worked with students of all ages but my primary focus was elementary school age children. While I am able to tutor a wide range of subjects, my primary subject of choice is Math for all grades as well as Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, and Statistics. I am passionate about helping students reach their goal of a better education and I love to see them understanding new subjects or subjects that they may have previously struggled in. Education is important for everyone and I hope to make it fun and enjoyable for those I tutor.

I have experience working with students of all ages, and what that has taught me is the importance of patience. Not every topic comes as easily to some students as others, and patience is essential. Additionally, I believe in carefully evaluating a student's history, progress and study habits to create an individualized approach for each student to best fit their needs.My specialty is in English test prep, and creative & essay writing.

I am a graduate from The University of Connecticut. I received my Bachelor of Science and Masters of Arts in Special Education with a focus in Math. Since graduation, I have taught seven years as a special education teacher in an elementary school, tutored students after school in reading and math, at home tutoring, and ran a program for high school credit recovery in that district. My favorite subject to tutor is reading because reading lays the foundation for all other learning. I am passionate about instilling the love of learning in others and I use that passion to help students become successful not only in what I am teaching but in life as well. I think it is critical to have confidence in what you are doing and feel pride in your accomplishments. In my spare time, I love to cook, read, scrapbook, and cheer on my Uconn Huskies basketball and football teams.

I also did the majority of my undergraduate work at the University of Arizona with a major in Economics and a minor in Sociology. I taught first grade for 15 years and did my student teaching and volunteer work in 3rd grade. I have also raised my own three children who are now in high school, college and graduated as an RN. While I am able to tutor a broad range of subjects and grades, I am most passionate in working with kids on their foundational skills in Reading, Writing and Math. I do also have a strong background in Phonics. I absolutely love teaching and helping kids develop a love of learning. I enjoy seeing students have successes in their educational journey and helping them reach those successes. I love being a part of the process of helping kids master a concept that may have previously been a struggle for them. I feel that reading is the foundation for all of us and have taken pride in being an integral part of my previous students successes in reading. In my previous teaching experience, I have been a Special Education cluster teacher as well as an ELL cluster teacher. I have worked with students that have developmental delays, IEPs, 504s, speech and language delays, gifted students as well as students in the mainstream classroom. I also feel that it is important to hold high standards for our children as they can many times achieve goals we/they never thought possible.

I am a Sophomore at the University of Maryland in College Park pursuing a degree in Business Management. As a college student, I am able to see that learning is something that we do every day, inside and outside of the classroom.
