I have taught high school English, mostly in private schools, for 15 years. In that time, I have taught ninth through twelfth graders, journalism, AP and IB English courses, advised the student newspaper, coordinated and moderated the yearly debates for the student UNIS-UN committee, and sat on the admissions committee.I helped design Freshman curricula to encourage students to get used to high school expectations and sophomore curricula aimed at preparing students for IB study should they choose to pursue that path. Those years included creative writing of poetry and short fiction as well as study of the personal essay modelled on writings of authors such as Loren Eisley, Joan Didion, James Baldwin, and Alice Walker. There is more to writing than crafting a persuasive critical paper about a work of fiction. It was also the responsibility of the English Department to review college essays for students before their formal submission. When I was not teaching English I was a law clerk with Lawyers for Human Right in South Africa during apartheid, the appellate division of the UnitedStates Attorneys office in D.C., and private practice with Jones Day Reavis and Pogue. But my first love is writing and teaching literature.

I am so happy to be a tutor with Varsity Tutors. Lifelong learning is a value I hold very dear. I received my degree 20 years ago, but I personally have never stopped enriching my life through education; whether it be through music, speaking foreign languages, or studying any topic I want to pursue. I look forward to helping you reach your educational goals in a fun and engaging way!

PHILOSOPHY TUTOR Having both a Master's degree and Bachelor's degree in Philosophy, I have taught various courses in the subject in the Baltimore Metropolitan area on a regular basis for the past 30 plus years. These include Introduction to Philosophy, Logic, Critical Thinking, Ethics and Business Ethics. Over the years, teaching these subjects in some of the best Community Colleges in the Nation as well as an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), I have learned how to tailor my teaching style to meet the needs of students with a great variety of competencies and skill levels. I especially pride myself on my ability to present complex Philosophical theories, positions and arguments in simple straightforward ways that not only hold and engage students' interest but which bring along as many as possible to an adequate understanding of the material in any given course. This ability and nurturing mindset is what I think especially outfits me to be an outstanding tutor. Also, having both assigned and graded well over ten thousand essays and term papers in Philosophy, I can be an invaluable resource in helping new learners plan, structure and write assignments in an area which may at first seem new, opaque and strange.LSAT LOGICAL REASONING, LSAT ANALYTICAL REASONING These sections, which comprise the bulk of the LSAT thus underscoring their relative importance, test the sort of basic reasoning skills taught in even Introductory Logic and Critical Thinking classes like the nature of disagreements, how the addition or subtraction of evidence can affect the relative strength of inductive arguments, analogical reasoning, common deductive argument forms and the ability to accurately draw conclusions from them when they are combined into a set of premises, and common reasoning fallacies occurring in arguments in ordinary language. Having taught the skills which lie behind the reasoning questions on the LSAT, I can quickly assess areas a given candidate needs more work and practice and fill them in on background knowledge they will need to improve their exam performance.ETHICS, MEDICAL ETHICS, BUSINESS ETHICS Students whose moral compass was honed in a particular cultural and/or religious tradition, can often find themselves a bit overwhelmed when in an Ethics course they are not only presented with moral viewpoints compatible with their own background but are also required to master the basics of a number of perspectives in secular ethics which they may not only find to be unfamiliar but even incompatible with their own basic moral beliefs. An experienced Ethics tutor like myself can help them navigate their way through the maze of conflicting ethical traditions they must master a basic knowledge of without losing sight of their own moral stance.ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL SUBJECTS While the bulk of my teaching experience has been involved with teaching adults, my own educational background and caring nature fits me well to tutor younger children in basic math, reading and writing. While a specialist in a Liberal Arts subject, having attended an engineering high school, the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, has given me a strong math and science background, too. This equips me to tutor in these subjects.

I recently earned a Master’s of Public Administration from Columbia University in New York. I chose to do a one-year intensive program in Environmental Science & Policy to get the most out of my time in graduate school and immerse myself in my classes, the university, and the city.Previously, I graduated from Tufts University with a Bachelor of Science in both Environmental Studies and Geology. I am a PADI certified Divemaster and I’ve been scuba diving all over the world. I have spent time working with special needs children and doing scientific research in labs and in the field. Throughout my education I have been a well-rounded student in sciences and the humanities because of my patience in problem solving and because I utilize different study methods for different material.I have experience working with a wide range of students from elementary school to college students to adult learners. The best part of tutoring for me is when a student truly begins to enjoy a subject that they initially found difficult. I love when students recognize their own progress and begin to feel very comfortable with things that were once very intimidating.I tutor many subjects from Reading and Math to Spanish and Geography and Environmental Science. I enjoy explaining complex ideas in a clear and easy to understand manner, and tailoring my tutoring style to the students’ needs. I think the biggest key to helping someone reach their goals is understanding their true motivation, and showing them that they can get to where they want to go is my passion.

I am excited about the chance to be a tutor with Varsity Tutors. I have two years of experience as a full time English teacher in South Korea, where I worked with elementary and middle school students. I was also an independent tutor for six months in Australia. I have a bachelors degree in Political Science, and a Master degree in Law and Diplomacy, so I am able to help students with history, political science, or other social science courses. In addition, I have years of ESL experience, and have a TESOL certificate certifying my professional skills in teaching English. In addition, I am a published author, and was a Senior Editor for the Fletcher Security Review, so I would be happy to help with any writing or editing tasks. Lastly, I have taken the SAT and GRE and scored in the top 5% on both verbal sections, and received a perfect score of a 6 on the GRE writing test, so I would be happy to help anyone prepare for those tests as well.

Hello. I am a graduate of multiple STEM programs and have a passion for lifelong learning and helping others along the way.I first graduated with a B.Sc. Chemistry (minor Physics) from the University of Calgary where I also completed an M.Eng. in Geomatics Engineering focussing on digital signal processing of 2D remote sensing images as well as seismic geophysical data. I have also worked in the electronics field for two years having completed an electronics diploma at SAIT but was spurred on by interests in antenna radiation patterns that led me to a data processing positioning using InSAR technology later in life. I also graduated summa cum laude in civil engineering from the University of Ottawa with a minor in computing technology (management option) but also took options in biology and chemistry to go along with environmental engineering, fluid dynamics, statics, strength of materials and engineering math courses. I then went on to pursue a Masters in civil engineering at Carleton (in progress) where I am analyzing SAR data to detect ground movement above aquifers but also gained an outstanding teaching assistant nomination at the same time while completing a certificate in teaching methods specifically related to how students are motivated to learn in online environments. I worked six semesters as a teaching assistant and consider it to be the most rewarding employment that I have been involved with; I love helping students learn and make the most of their education while balancing all of life's busy requirements. All that is to say that I am dedicated to understanding the student from many different backgrounds and learning styles and helping them on their journey seeing them succeed.

I'm currently a computer science student at Swarthmore College. While I'm pursuing a technical degree I have diverse interests and I believe that my liberal arts background help me connect and communicate effectively as a tutor. I want to help you or your child understand the core concepts of any field instead of rattling off formulas and techniques for specific questions. To me, the mentor/mentee relationship is one of the most important human relationships --I will take any request seriously and put in my best effort.

I have been an educator for 16 years. I have taught English, ESL, Creative Writing, have tutored for various standardize tests, and was an LD tutor for a year as well.I am currently a middle school counselor. Although I love being a school counselor, I absolutely LOVE and miss teaching. I teach two summer school sessions each summer and teach Sunday school every other Sunday. What I enjoy most about teaching is being part of the process of helping someone figure out how to complete a task that was previously thought impossible and watch as the student gains confidence and pride of what he/she now can do.
