I grew up in a small town that didn’t even have a high school. Some of us had the resources to drive, but many of my friends and I depended on the county to bus us almost an hour across the desert to get to school every morning. I’d sit on the torn leather seats with a book over my knees, a scratch ...

I attended the University of Texas at Arlington where I obtained a Bachelor's of Science in Economics with a minor in mathematics as well as a Master of Arts in Economics. Additionally, I recently graduated from the University of Texas at Dallas with a Master of Science in Statistics. Whatever the setting or pursuit, I adhered to particular courses of action, inadvertently then deliberately, that may be expressed concisely as the following: comprehension and practice compromise the prudent approach to learning. During my tenure in graduate school, I served as a graduate teaching assistant. This required me to grade, tutor, and proctor at both the undergraduate and graduate levels

I graduated from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) with a BA in Classical Civilizations. After graduation, I have worked as a classical languages, writing, and literature tutor, teaching students ranging from middle schoolers to doctoral candidates. I am also a junior high Latin teacher at St. Norbert School. While I love helping students with any language-related subject (in fact, I truly enjoy analyzing English grammar!), I am most passionate about teaching Latin. I find it extremely gratifying when my students realize that a so-called "dead" language can actually be relevant to their lives! When tutoring Latin, I like to focus on using various strategies to help students "read with expectations, " meaning that students engage in linear reading (reading left-to-right, without skipping around), and approach texts with a notion of what makes a sentence complete. More generally, as a tutor, I am very patient and flexible, always keeping a student's goals and motivations in mind when planning and teaching lessons. When I'm not teaching, I enjoy various hobbies: reading contemporary fiction, visiting museums, taking bike rides, and spending time with my pet rabbit!

I am a graduate of the University of Adelaide in South Australia. I received my Ph.D. and Bachelors of Science (Honors) in the field of Microbiology. I have extensive teaching experience being an Adjunct Professor at the City College of Chicago, Stratford University, and Marymount University teaching the Microbiology, General Biology, and General Science courses. I have taught many minority, multicultural, and mature age students studying to enter pre-nursing, medical assistant, and pharmacology courses. I have also been a Volunteer Lecturer at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. I have attended numerous Grand Rounds and Case Studies presented by Physicians at the Department of Infectious Diseases at UIC and the NIH. I want to provide students with the opportunity to utilize my knowledge and experience in microbiology and the biological sciences. I tutor the subjects of Microbiology, Genetics, and General Biology. My favorite subject to tutor is Microbiology as I have 25 years experience as a research scientist studying the genetics and molecular mechanisms of microbial pathogens at Medical Research Institutions and Universities around the world. I have lived in three countries, have numerous friends from different cultures, and have traveled extensively throughout Europe and Scandinavia.I believe in providing students with a comfortable environment where they have the confidence to ask questions and not be afraid to display their ignorance. This is especially true if they believe the question is too trivial. I demonstrate my own enthusiasm for the subject and explain why I feel it should be so interesting and important to everyone in society. I do this by regaling personal experiences in the field, real-life current situations involving biologically, topical events, and stories I know of scientific researchers who made various discoveries. I also make the subject more human by openly discussing the nuances of newsworthy topical events and real-life situations. I describe how topics in the course apply to their own lives, bodies, and health. As often as possible I use real life and news worthy events to explain the science behind the social discussion. This includes stories related to scientific research, specific infectious diseases, and patient case studies. Putting flesh onto the bones of the course material provides a student with something that is concrete and familiar to them. I am a strong believer in the use of videos, photos, websites, and 3D models to provide texture to some of the more difficult concepts of the course.

I am currently an undergraduate student at Western Washington University pursuing a BS in Environmental Science with an emphasis in toxicology. I am most passionate on subjects that pertain to life sciences such as Environmental Science and Ecology, however have a deep appreciation for the fundamentals taught in biology and chemistry. I have a deep value for education and continuing to stay up-to-date with the current knowledge and research. Hopefully through tutoring, I can pass off this same appreciation for knowledge and get my students excited for learning and understanding new topics.

I am a mentor because I wish for others to have the same opportunity for motivation and success as I had from my teachers in high school. My mentoring experience has been primarily in three different areas. First, I have had direct involvement mentoring middle school students in mathematics through my local dentist's office. From there, I quickly learned that no experience is quite as unique or as rewarding as seeing a child have that light bulb moment when they finally understand a difficult problem or concept. Additionally, the lesson does not stop with just academics either. I have found that, in developing relationships with these students, I got to better understand them as people and adjust my methods accordingly. My second experience mentoring comes directly from teaching English to children of all ages in Oudong, Cambodia. Due to my limited understanding of the local language and teaching multiple levels of English at once, I was compelled to be creative to ensure all of my students understood our lessons. I developed lesson plans around the curriculum that featured games, singing, and dancing, finding alternative methods of expressing meaning to be very important in learning difficult concepts. This has had important ramifications for my style of mentoring; creativity and being able to think of ideas in different matters are useful to everyone trying to learn something new. Lastly, I have had the opportunity to extend my understanding of others in my work as a Democracy Fellow. Part of the mission of my university's Democracy and Public Discourse Initiative is to teach constructive practices of engagement and communication on topics of community concern. Through such projects as our freshman mental health conversations and our forum on substance abuse in in the county, I have learned that the best work is done on the grounds of a common understanding amongst diverse viewpoints. Ultimately, I hope to extend my training and the basic philosophy of freedom of expression as a method of making my mentees feel welcome in conversing with me.

I graduated from Loyola University Chicago with an MS in Microbiology and Immunology with an emphasis in Immunology. I also received a BA in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Carthage College in Kenosha, WI. Throughout my schooling I have had experience tutoring/teaching my colleagues in both group and one-on-one settings. What I have learned is no student learns material the same way. It takes dialogue between tutor, students, and parents to determine the best plan of action for the student to attain their academic goals. I believe in an active learning environment that includes discussion-based learning, supplemented with hands on learning activities within my sessions that is specifically tailored to each student's needs and grade level.

I first began tutoring for an eighth grade composition class in high school and was amazed at the impact I could make by devoting a small amount of time to help a student. From there, my experiences grew in tutoring my younger brother and his friends in elementary math, history, and science. As I worked, I began to better understand that everybody has a different way of learning. I also found that communicating effectively makes all the difference in helping someone understand a new concept. I often find myself tutoring peers with whom I share a class and enjoy being able to see them understand the material we work on together. Sometimes, it's as simple as knowing background information or seeing material in a new light that makes all the difference in a student's confidence and understanding. Not only is understanding the material imperative to tutoring but supplying resources and strengthening study skills will assist in retaining the new information. Therefore, my goals in being a tutor are to find a learning technique best suited for each student, supply them with resources, and encourage the use of customized study techniques and an effective study schedule to help achieve their goals.
