My approach to tutoring stems from my own experiences as a learner: I understand that failing to grasp a concept can be frustrating in and of itself, and I will take the time to explain it as many different ways as the student needs. Asking for help is not indicative of stupidity or weakness, nor is failing to comprehend a topic the first time it is broached. I work with students to help them determine the learning style that works best for them.I have never been a fan of memorizing facts, so whenever possible I like to tackle concepts in a manner that will explain the “why.” In my own learning I find I can grasp issues better by breaking them up into small, manageable steps and concepts, so this is what I strive for in helping others as well. I find this approach tends to lead to a deeper understanding so students are able to recognize and navigate similar topics in the future rather than merely the problem at hand.Along similar lines, I like to connect topics to the real world and other areas the student has more experience with or is enthusiastic about. In math especially the abstract nature of many concepts can disillusion students early on in the learning process, and bringing those ideas back to the student's world can make them more accessible and easier to utilize. All in all, I love learning and derive a great sense of accomplishment from mastering a new topic, and to the greatest degree possible I strive to pass that on to my students.

I graduated from the University of Puget Sound with a BA in International Political Economy and an interdisciplinary emphasis in Asian Studies. During college, I worked as an academic peer advisor, helping first-year students with academic planning. Since college, in addition to tutoring ESL, GED, and middle-school Math and Reading, I have worked as a college-prep writing instructor in a prison. I've also lived in Asia for three of the last five years, teaching and studying in mostly India and Southeast Asia. My tutoring/teaching style combines a big-picture, compassionate approach with detail-oriented and focused efficiency. In other words, I motivate my students by helping them apply their lessons to more than just school, while still focusing on the necessary outcomes of improved scores! I most enjoy helping students with their writing skills, basic-intermediate math skills, college planning, and study/organization skills. In my free time, I can be found doing acrobatic yoga, cooking tasty vegetarian food, or biking up and down the hills of Seattle!

I have been teaching History, and occasionally Geography, for over 20 years. I teach all the World Civ and US History classes, as well as several other Histories (European, Asian). My main focus is to help students see connections and forces behind historical events -- in short the "Big Picture" -- while also understanding the importance of specific events and people. I frequently conduct one on one sessions with students, which I enjoy greatly, to help them see these points and connections, and to adopt strategies for reading and understanding text books, and strategies to incorporate the 'dreaded dates' into the process.

Test taking has always been a game that I enjoy playing and I'm excited to share my tips, tricks and techniques with the next wave of students, crashing and breaking against the ivory tower of academia. Tests are often anticipated with dread, but a positive attitude, confidence, and the idea that examinations are an opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and abilities will change the way that you approach your next big assessment. Together, we can prepare you for any test or academic challenge while exploring a studying style that you can use on your own in the future.

I graduated from Cal Poly with a Bachelor of Science in anthropology and geography and a minor in religious studies. I recently applied to the University of Washington to get my master's in middle eastern studies. Currently, I am studying Arabic through an online program offered by Oregon State University. I am fortunate to have had many different kinds of tutoring experiences. I volunteered in Quito, Ecuador with a non-profit daycare facility for at-risk youth. My duties included reading with children in English and helping them with school work. In junior high and high school I was a peer mentor. This gave me experience working with older students and refining study skills. In college, I was a Teacher's Assistant which allowed me to help students at a college level master course material and study for exams. I have tutored algebra, geometry, reading, writing, history, anthropology, and religious studies. My favorite subject to tutor is math. Math has challenged me in the past, so I know from experience how rewarding it is to finally understand a concept. I want to help students achieve this feeling. I also love helping students with writing. Writing is such a creative and fun process for me, and I enjoy helping students express themselves creatively on paper. My teaching philosophy is that every student I tutor is also an incredible teacher for me. Each student's learning style is so unique. A good tutor is patient and passionate enough to engage each student's unique learning style and help them find study skills and learning techniques that fit their style the best. This means being open to learning new techniques as a tutor and not just sticking to techniques that have worked in the past. Outside of academics, I am passionate about hiking, sailing, surfing, rock climbing, and yoga. I look forward to learning with you!

Hello! My name is Ross and I recently graduated from University of Washington in Biology and Environmental Science. I specialized in Ornithology, the study of birds; I'm a big bird nerd. I've had experience tutoring biology, math, and environmental science for the Athletic Department at UW and serving as a Teacher Assistant for UW's Biology Department, including a biodiversity seminar to Peru. Just like the D1 student athletes I work with, academics sometimes don't come naturally, but I look forward to fixing that false assumption. In addition to tutoring, I love playing soccer and I love traveling. I look forward to connecting with you!

I recently graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside with my Bachelors in Biology. I worked for the UW-Parkside Tutoring Center for almost four years. This experience has been one of my best, as it helped me interact with many students from different majors. During my second year as a tutor, I was promoted to the lead math tutor position. As a lead tutor, I trained incoming math tutors as well as helped my supervisor plan the different tutor meetings. My experience as a tutor has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Students often gave me positive feedback on my tutoring techniques, and I've seen many of them succeed in their classes after using the tutoring center and getting my help.I think the best qualities in a tutor are patience and empathy. As a tutor, I've always tried to put myself in the student's shoes and try to find different methods of explaining the same material until I am certain that my student feels comfortable with the given material.
