I graduated from the University of Washington with a BA in Economics. After graduation, I worked in the financial industry for a number of years, but ultimately decided to go back to school in order to pursue a career in medicine. Since then, I have taken all of my prerequisites and worked as an Organic Chem, General Chem, and Biology tutor at Bellevue College for the past 2 years. As a student who originally had no exposure to science, I fully understand how daunting the subjects can be, and it is my goal to help those students become more comfortable with science and ultimately achieve their academic goals. Besides helping students, I enjoy spending time playing the bass guitar, doodling, playing video games, and hanging out with friends.

As the oldest of five children, I have extensive experience as both a mentor and a teacher. I received my undergraduate degree from Emory University in Anthropology, with a focus on religion and philosophy. After graduating, I spent three years in Africa and Asia working in sustainable development and teaching English to both adults and children, before moving to Paris to pursue a master's degree. I received my graduate degree in international relations and diplomacy from the American Graduate School, writing my thesis on the effects of domestic politics on US foreign policy in the Middle East. I have a passion for learning and education, and an odd enjoyment for standardized tests. I try to share this enthusiasm and positive attitude with all of my students, so that studying becomes an enjoyable, engaging activity. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy weightlifting, mixed martial arts, reading, puzzling, and cooking.

For my last two years of college, I worked as a tutor at Berkeley High School's Bridge program, which aims to help underrepresented high school students on their paths to college. I helped students with many different subjects including test prep, but most of my experience was in math. While I majored in humanities, my strong math background from high school enabled me to help many students in subjects ranging from Algebra 1 to AP Calculus. Also, in the summer before my senior year I earned a TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) certificate in China, while working with elementary age children. I have enjoyed all of my experiences with teaching and tutoring because I like being able to help students with their academic challenges, as I believe that education is essential to becoming a better person. I have had many people help me on my academic journey, and I know that it takes a team to succeed. In my free time, I enjoy reading, cooking, and playing ping pong.

My passion is in helping students develop strong critical thinking and analysis skills, as well as how to convey these skills in writing. I really enjoy the unique challenges of working with all age groups and mainly enjoy the satisfaction that comes from guiding a student through a new skill or set of knowledge.In my free time, I enjoy playing music; I have played the guitar most of my life. I also am really into good food and enjoy cooking and discovering new places to eat.

I most recently completed my Master's degree in chemistry from the University of Oregon, where the focus of my study was on polymer and materials science. While at UO, I taught freshman and sophomore chemistry classes, and I still keep in touch with many of my students. I also previously earned a Bachelor's degree in biochemistry from the University of West Florida. I have lots of experience teaching and tutoring chemistry students of all levels, and I also have done some work in the past with SAT test prep. I know chemistry can be an incredibly challenging subject to tackle, but I hope to make the journey a little easier for all of you.

After graduating from Elmhurst College with a Bachelor’s in Music Theory/Composition, I completed post-baccalaureate science and math courses, and then went on to study medicine for 2.5 years at Bastyr University. While I appreciate medical school for the challenges, lessons, and personal growth it offered, I recently left that program, realizing that my dream is to be an orchestral conductor. I am currently in the process of finding the right school for this undertaking.One skill I gained through changing careers twice is the ability to enter an area where I have no experience, and quickly acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for succeeding in that field. As a matter of fact, it is because of this background that I have developed study skills focusing around the act of studying itself. From having applied these skills in a variety of fields, I have seen that if a person wants to be able to learn anything, then they must learn HOW to learn.Through the roles of college tutor, private music lessons instructor, and choir director, I have worked with students in: anatomy, physiology, biology, chemistry, algebra, music (theory, instrumental, voice), writing, and more. While we do focus on different contents depending on the students’ needs, there are some overarching principles of learning that can be applied to the mastery of any subject. As a tutor, I focus on developing in my students an awareness of these methods, so that they are able to maximize their learning experiences.I love working with students to help them achieve their learning goals, and pick up lifelong learning skills in the process. I am from Washington State and am currently getting my bachelor degree in mathematics and environmental science at St Olaf College in Northfield, MN. I am a tutor at my college for calculus 1 and 2, and have successfully worked with over 10 students over the course of the semester. While most of my current experience has to do with working with college age students, I have also worked with children from the ages 4 to 17 through gymnastics coaching. In addition, I have worked successfully with students with both ADHD and Autism. Currently I am available to tutor elementary and middle school level math as well as Algebra and Calculus 1, however I am most excited about tutoring for calculus because, while it is difficult, I feel like with some work, it can become fun for almost anybody who is taking the class. My philosophy when it comes to teaching and learning is that with the right kind of help and motivation, a student can master any subject they put their mind to. Hard work, patience, and respect from both the student and the teacher are key to creating a learning environment that can produce tangible results. I would say my tutoring style is adaptable.
