Gabriel Paez began teaching in Chicago Public Schools in 2013 as a 1st and 2nd grade bilingual Spanish classroom teacher. During his 3rd year teaching, he transitioned into Bilingual Education Coordinator, responsible for providing ESL and Spanish language arts to Kindergarten through 8th grade. Having finished 6 years at the same school, and earning his Master's degree in Teaching with a Bilingual Spanish & ESL endorsement, Gabriel is now seeking ESL, Spanish, reading, and writing students for the summer. Much of what motivates him as a teacher is his view that bilingualism and multiculturalism are assets, not shortcomings, and that all children have a right to learn the language of their families and communities. His experience teaching multiple grade levels allows him to scaffold instruction exactly to the student's reading and comprehension needs. His communicative approach encourages students to approach reading as a conversation about a topic of interest. He believes students show their best work when they are interested in the material, and that children can sense authenticity and cultural relevance. Through a friendly yet firm teaching style, students will not be expected to complete busy work or packets, but will be engaging in higher level questioning and conversation about texts based in real world topics. Gabriel also excels as a writing tutor for students at all levels.

I'm a seasoned educator who has been tutoring privately and professionally since I was undergraduate student at North Carolina State University. After taking 2+ years off (of tutoring) to do some adjunct teaching at a local college, I'm looking forward to once again working with K-12 students to provide supplemental learning assistance in various subjects and help families reach the educational goals set for their children. I look forward to meeting students and families!

I believe in the power of young people, and by tutoring I help students find that power for themselves. My background in education started at St. Lawrence University, where I obtained my Bachelors Degree in both Global Studies and Communication Arts. Currently, I am in graduate school at Northeastern Illinois University to obtain my M.A.T. in Elementary Education. My tutoring experience began during my undergraduate years, and continues today. I tutored writing for three years at St. Lawrence University, primarily with undergraduate and graduate students.I developed upon these skills upon graduation by participating in a year of service with Americorps by working in a middle school. Following that, I served as a teaching assistant in a Kindergarten classroom for two years and acted as the morning supervisor for all K-2 students. I tutored a wide range of K-6 students during this time in both math and writing. My favorite subject to tutor is writing, followed by reading. I have years of experience tutoring writing, and alongside the wealth of knowledge I have, I've found many ways to make writing fun and engaging even for struggling students. Some of my hobbies and interest include comic books, Star Wars, poetry, and photography. I often try and include pop culture into my tutoring sessions to enhance student engagement, especially when working with younger students.

My primary goal as a tutor is to give each student an individual connection to the material they are learning, and I have been practicing this goal since I began teaching seven years ago.I have taught one-on-one, online, and in classrooms. My youngest students were getting ready to start kindergarten, and my oldest were close to retirement. Through these varied experiences, I have learned to adapt my teaching strategies to suit the needs and interests of each student I work with. I believe that for students to be excited about learning, the material has to be important to them. By allowing each student’s interests to guide how they learn the information, I help them to understand and remember the material rather than just complete the problem in front of them. I am passionate about teaching and flexible in my approach. If something is not working, I believe that it is my job as a tutor to adjust my methods—not the student’s job to conform to them. I use my students’ strengths to help them overcome what challenges them, whether that means using imagination exercises to decode difficult reading passages or tackling grammar as though it were a math problem. Through this approach, I help my students to build confidence, thereby ensuring that they can succeed when facing problems on their own.I believe that trust and respect are key components of a successful tutoring relationship, and I treat my students with as much respect as I ask from them. I am punctual, considerate, and professional. Entering someone’s home and life is a big responsibility, and I take that responsibility seriously.

The word assess comes from the Latin assidere, meaning "to sit with". A teacher who "sits with" a student practices collective learning where both assume equal responsibility for the creation and sharing of knowledge. An outstanding teacher is challenged and inspired by the true teacher of teachers; the student. In elementary school, I was diagnosed a 'slow reader'. Each day, I was pulled from a "one size fits all" heterogeneous classroom and sequestered in a "one size fits all" homogeneous classroom. My reading skills and abilities did not improve over time. I carried the shame associated with being more unalike than alike for quite some time. Until I didn't.Teachers did not teach me to read. Throughout my education, countless teachers introduced me a dizzying array of genres to open my mind, fill me with wonder, and enlarge my vocabulary. They provided ample time for me to read throughout the day. Reading became a "need" equal to air, water, food, and shelter. With every passing day, I grew academically, socially, and emotionally. Sharing stories we have read as well as personal stories from the heart affirms we are more alike than unalike.Education is a noble profession and all work is honored. I honor my mother who worked in a school cafeteria for 25 years. I honor my father who was an over-the-road truck driver and was illiterate (I never told him I knew). He taught me that the world is flat; no one is above or below another. Know no stranger and give freely without condition. I carried these early teachings into adulthood and practice them daily. As a teacher, I do my level best to walk their walk in service to all.
