I am a University of Texas - Austin graduate with honors, BS in Molecular Biology. I also hold an MS in Biology from University of California - San Diego, specializing in Cell Biology. My tutoring experience is, frankly, pretty massive; I have been a tutor almost continuously since 2000. In some cases I taught the same student for several years. Most of these students were international students taught in various Asian countries, but all instruction was in English and the students were from dozens of different nations, including of course many Americans. I also have considerable classroom teaching experience; I have taught Science, Business and Math courses at several high schools and also worked at numerous private schools of different kinds. Due to my academic background my greatest strength as a tutor is in the area of IB Biology and Chemistry, AP Biology and Chemistry, and university freshman courses in the same subjects. However, I can tutor essentially any Science and Math taught in high school. I consider myself an extremely proficient Math tutor especially with grade 10, Algebra II, Trigonometry and any course below that level. IB Higher Math is a bit of a hard slog for me (as for most students!), but IB Core Math and Math Studies are no problem. For university work, I can help with General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry and almost any undergraduate course in Biology or similar subjects, including Microbiology and Botany. My core strength is in Molecular Biology and Cell Biology. In addition, I can help with humanities assignments, including History, Business, Psychology and English. I am a very capable writer and researcher; I have approximately 80 published freelance writing credits. I also worked as a business journalist in Thailand and started a commercial technical editing firm in Shanghai. I have a fairly considerable business background and took a number of MBA courses including Statistics, Management Theory, Finance, and Accounting, with very high marks. I also studied Economics at freshman level and consider it one of the most enjoyable and illuminating courses I ever took. In addition to all this I do have a great deal of test prep experience, especially SAT. Besides SAT I have taught GMAT, GRE, SSAT, SAT-II and IB exam prep in various subjects, especially Biology, Chemistry and Business. My tutoring experience has taught me that almost every student can benefit from tutoring. For gifted students the right tutor can expose them to advanced ideas and connections that they otherwise would not encounter for years, if ever. One of my most talented former students started studying university-level science material in 8th grade. He was later admitted, with my help, to summer programs at Cornell and Harvard that allowed high school students to work in university laboratories; ultimately he went to Berkeley, then medical school and is now a neurosurgeon. I am proud that I had something to do with his success. For students with serious academic difficulties, a tutor can patiently teach them the basic skills they need to surmount their immediate obstacles, while at the same time laying the groundwork for future achievements that in some cases they or their parents would have thought impossible. In our society, it is unfortunately the case that classroom instruction is often ineffective. In my view, the main reasons are a lax classroom environment that does not promote learning; low expectations; and unfortunately, a relatively low standard of professionalism expected of classroom teachers. Although I have seen both sides of this issue as a classroom teacher myself, and there are definitely some brilliant and dedicated classroom teachers out there, this last problem is a major reason why tutoring can be so helpful. During my tutorials, I have heard countless kids say "I didn't get that at all when Mr X taught it in class, but when YOU explained it it was so simple!" At the same time, tutoring is not magic. In particular, a tutor cannot do much with a student who is fundamentally unmotivated, although I have learned ways to build motivation given adequate time. In general I feel that tutoring really helps students to achieve their potential. In terms of my teaching style, I am very direct, professional and no nonsense. To the limits of my capabilities, I try to provide whatever the client wants and will do whatever works in terms of approach and lesson activities, adjusting my methods according to client needs. As for my interests, I have a lot, including writing, reading, travel (I have been all over Asia and lived in several Asian countries), cooking, photography, racquetball and football (both kinds), among others. I have also visited dozens of universities and worked a lot of different jobs, which is helpful when clients need help with university or graduate school applications, or want advice about career options.

Hi, I'm Karl! I'm a 4th year physics undergraduate at Penn State and I really enjoy any opportunity to help people attain and maintain fluency in the STEM fields. A little about me: I was born in Bermuda (and still go back there to visit family every year) but was raised primarily in Wall, NJ. I loved sports growing up so I played almost everything including football, baseball, soccer, basketball, and ran track. In school, I figured out that I was pretty good at math around 5th grade and then in high school I really found that I really enjoyed physics as well. In high school I often tutored my team mates from the football team and track team and I discovered that it was really rewarding to see someone else grow and know that I was a part of that. Once at Penn State, I decided to build off of the success I had in high school and decided to start leading study groups with my classmates as well as assisting new friends I met along the way in any of their STEM classes (mostly Calculus). This now brings me to today: I am a physics student who has been in the advanced physics program for the past three years and have completed Newtonian Dynamics, Electricity and Magnetism, Thermodynamics, Modern Physics, Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Dynamics, Vector and Multi-variable Calculus, and Differential Equations with an average grade in these courses of a 93. I'm so excited to help you gain a deeper understanding of whatever it is you'd like to know more about!

My tutoring approach is one of coaching, mentoring, and helping the student understand exactly what level and detail of help that they need to get ahead. Combining the personal discipline learned during 20 years as a Naval Officer with the unique expertise learned in one-on-one communication with peers and sailors as well as my five children, I can help you or your child succeed. A Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, and a Math Minor help qualify me for tutoring in many subjects. My individualized tutoring methods also raised my step-son's Physics grade from a C to an A in one semester. I specialize in mathematics (basic arithmetic through calculus) but can help in many other subjects. Learning should be fun, but should also, at times, bring "Instant" results. I work to keep positive encouragement in every lesson, tutoring, or test preparation session. I speak fluent Spanish!

Frequently Asked Questions
Business tutoring covers a wide range of topics across multiple areas of study. Students can get personalized instruction in accounting fundamentals, financial analysis, economics, business management, marketing strategy, entrepreneurship, and business law. Whether you're working through introductory business courses, AP® Business and Finance, IB Business Management, or college-level coursework, tutors can help you master the concepts, calculations, and strategic thinking skills required to succeed.
In a classroom setting, instruction is designed for an average student, which often means struggling students fall behind while advanced students aren't challenged enough. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction adapts to your specific learning pace, focuses on your actual gaps in understanding, and emphasizes the concepts that matter most for your goals. A tutor can spend extra time on accounting principles if that's where you struggle, skip topics you've mastered, and connect abstract business concepts to real-world examples that resonate with you—something that's nearly impossible in a traditional classroom.
Business tutoring is available for students at all levels—from those just beginning to learn business fundamentals through high school introductory courses, to AP® and IB students tackling advanced topics, to college and graduate students managing complex coursework. Tutors work with students building foundational knowledge in economics and business principles, those seeking to improve grades in specific classes, students preparing for standardized business exams, and those pursuing specialized skills like financial analysis or business strategy. Whatever your current level or goals, personalized instruction can help you progress.
Business is inherently practical, and effective tutoring connects classroom theory to actual business scenarios. Tutors help you understand how financial statements reveal a company's health, how supply and demand curves affect real markets, how marketing strategies work in competing companies, or how management decisions impact organizational success. By working through case studies, analyzing actual business data, and discussing real-world examples, you develop the critical thinking and problem-solving skills that matter both in exams and in actual business careers.
Yes. Whether you're preparing for AP® Business and Finance, AP® Microeconomics, AP® Macroeconomics, IB Business Management, college entrance exams with business sections, or standardized assessments like the GMAT or CPA exam, personalized tutoring is highly effective for exam preparation. Tutors can help you understand test-specific formats and question types, identify your weak areas through targeted review, build speed and accuracy with practice problems, and develop confidence in your knowledge. The focused, one-on-one approach means you're spending study time on what actually matters for your specific exam.
Strong math and quantitative skills form the foundation for most business coursework—particularly understanding percentages, ratios, basic algebra, and data interpretation. Beyond math, you need strong analytical reading skills to understand case studies and business scenarios, clear written communication to articulate business arguments, and critical thinking to evaluate different strategies and their outcomes. If you're struggling with any of these foundational areas, a tutor can strengthen these skills while you're learning new business concepts, ensuring you're not held back by gaps in prerequisite knowledge.
Many students see noticeable improvement within a few weeks of starting personalized tutoring, particularly if they begin working with a tutor early in the term. However, the timeline depends on factors like how much material you need to catch up on, how frequently you meet with your tutor, and how actively you apply what you're learning outside tutoring sessions. Students who meet regularly and complete practice work between sessions typically see faster progress. The most important factor is consistency—regular, focused tutoring combined with your own effort produces measurable results.
