My first teaching gig was nearly 5,000 miles away from home, in the small town of Szolnok, Hungary. I had just graduated Lynchburg College with a BA in English, and having grown up in Virginia my entire life, I was eager to experience something cultural and new. I figured teaching English abroad would be the most intense, interesting, and educational way to jumpstart a career in teaching. Now, ten years later, I can say that my initial teaching experience abroad was the tipping point in my life, for it led me to become not only a lifelong teacher, but a lifetime student as well.Since 2005, I have gone on to teach English in Poland and Hungary, and also back in my hometown, Manassas, Virginia. I have taught English and Literature to high school students, ESL to adult professionals, and last year I taught Creative Writing to Honors Freshmen at Virginia Commonwealth University. At VCU's Writing Center I privately tutored students, helping them write and revise their essays for their final portfolios. Having played guitar since the age of fourteen (and also touring in a couple rock bands), I have some experience teaching music and guitar as well.My education includes a BA in English, an MA in European Studies, and an MFA in Creative Writing (fiction). In my spare time I like reading, writing creatively, and playing music. Most weekends in New York I try to visit a museum or see a concert, and many-a-Sundays you'll find me burrowed in a cafe and reading manuscripts for my day-time job (a literary agency).

I am a graduate of the MA Fashion Studies program at Parsons The New School for Design in New York, having previously studied linguistics and foreign languages (concentrating in Russian and French) at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and at McGill University in Montreal. I currently serve as adjunct faculty in the Art and Design History and Theory department at Parsons, where I specialize in courses which combine numerous disciplines within the humanities, such as a course about the relationship between fashion and language and a graduate seminar about writing for fashion publications. I have also led elementary summer art camp workshops in my hometown of Los Alamos, New Mexico. My teaching methods, which are interactive, engaging, and tailored to a range of learning styles, have consistently been described by my students as motivational and encouraging. I tutor a wide range of subjects, from Middle School Math to PSAT and SAT test preparation, but I am most passionate about Critical Reading and Writing and Essay Editing. These are areas in which my students make remarkable progress in short periods of time and also find great pleasure in relating the themes of their writing to their own outside interests and passions. I also enjoy helping students prepare to take standardized tests by addressing, in an understanding and accommodating way, the common anxieties and stresses that can accompany test-taking. Outside of school and tutoring, I enjoy traveling, reading, visiting museums, cooking, and snowboarding.

I am an aspiring applied mathematician, with particular interest in image processing and climate science. I graduated in May 2017 from Washington University in St. Louis with a bachelor's in physics and mathematics, and am beginning a PhD program in September 2017 at the University of Chicago in Computational and Applied Mathematics. I've tutored introductory physics students for three years and enjoyed it thoroughly, as a chance to help other students while revisiting fundamental concepts to enhance my own knowledge. I'm eager to continue reaching out and helping students of math and physics to succeed and, furthermore, to appreciate the beauty and power of these subjects.

I am currently enrolled as an undergraduate at Columbia University here in New York working towards a degree in biology. For my entire life, my goal has been to learn, and to take what I learn in the classroom and apply it in the real world. I am never satisfied with the easy answer (except for in a timed setting, where shortcuts can be your savior) and am constantly striving to learn new things. I have studied a diverse range of topics, from the hard sciences, to finance, and the arts, and have excelled. This is not because I am a genius. It is because I am truly interested in what I am studying and I have developed a practical system for studying and organizing. While you may shrug organizational skills off now as something only old people do, I have to tell you otherwise. As a twenty year old college student with a full plate, organization is one of the most important things to learn early on.I have worked as a tutor since the 9th grade, starting out with biology and chemistry, and later branching out to SAT prep and most other subjects. My philosophy is this: all students are able to excel at anything they set their minds to. The reason why some do while others struggle has more to do with poor studying habits or a different way of learning material that is not addressed by the teacher's methods. It is my job to diagnose what the problem is and to fix it. I have done this with great success in the past and will continue to do so.In my free time, I love to make films, start new projects, play the piano, read, and work with animals. I am currently working on a music startup as well as several apps with a friend from college. In short, I like to make things.Back to the most important thing; you. Just breathe. We will get through this together. At the end of the day, a string of bad test scores or that "C" in Geometry (ok, "D") is not going to dictate your success in life. Success lies within ourselves and not on pieces of paper.I look forward to working with each and every one of you.

I work as a second shift teacher at a middle school in Brooklyn. I am a recent graduate of Davidson College, which was recently named by Forbes as the best college in the South. I received a BA in English with a Concentration in Education and subsequently moved to New York City . While in school I spent a semester shadowing a local high school teacher and aiding students in a one-on-one environment with a variety of tasks within their English curriculum. As English was my major, it is certainly my passion, but I also love a variety of other subjects, especially math and standardized testing. As a teacher during the week I understand the importance of making conceptual connections as a student rather than memorizing facts and strategies.

I've been involved with Math problems before I even started learning it in school. Because of my dad's passion for Math, he started teaching me Math at a very young age with real life examples. That molded my inclination towards it. Since then, I've been very good with Math and have constantly maintained my grades. Maths has been my forte and I even enjoy studying for it.Also, I love teaching kids and working with them. I used to tutor middle school students back home during my Summer Vacation. That lasted for around 6 months before I came to college.

Link to LinkedIn Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brendan-smith-9a7a01112?trk=hp-identity-nameHello! I'm Brendan. I'm a sophomore at Brigham Young University studying sociology. I enjoy hiking, being with family, and all things music. I specialize in teaching Mandarin Chinese. I have been taking Chinese classes ever since I was 13, but what got me seriously interested in the language and the culture was when I lived in Taiwan for 2 years in a service capacity. During this time, I had the opportunity to serve in a number of cities in southern and western Taiwan and speak constantly with native Chinese-speakers. I gained a love for the language, the food, the culture, and the people there so I decided to continue my studies as I returned to the United States.Since being home, I have been taking advanced Chinese grammar and culture classes and loving it! During this past year, I have also had experience teaching new language learners Mandarin. They, like I had previously done, were going to serve in Chinese-speaking parts of the world. I helped them go through an intensive 9-week program aimed to help them learn the language and culture of the area they would be serving in, so they could be functional when they got to their areas of service. I found through this experience that every student has different needs and strengths and my job as a tutor isn't so much to lecture as it is to create an environment in which the student is willing to express questions or concerns and be desires to increase their skills. I believe that it's easiest to help a student when you have a shared vision and goal for what you can accomplish together and work hard to reach it. I help my students accomplish their goals by aiding them in discovering what methods best help them become passionate and proactive about learning and then practicing the implementation of those methods with them, so that when they don't need me anymore, they will be equipped with the tools they need to keep learning on their own.I appreciate your consideration! I hope to be able to help you achieve your learning goals.

I am a recent Boston University graduate with a background in Psychology and Pre-Medical Studies. Originally from Los Angeles, CA, I grew up loving both the sciences and the arts. Of the sciences, Human Biology and Chemistry are by far my favorite. The millions of processes and life cycles that occur within and around us each day fascinate me and I love imparting that fascination on to others. I am a firm believer in different learning processes and always make sure to tailor my lessons to best fit my students. I enjoy tutoring in Psychology, Chemistry (General and Organic), Biology, Microbiology, Anatomy, Physiology, and Writing. I first started tutoring while in high school, teaching my younger cousin her times tables, and I have since developed a love for helping students achieve their goals in various subjects. In addition to working towards a better understanding of a specific subject, I also place great focus on organizational skills and time management. Studying is really a matter of technique and I look forward to helping my students find the right one! During my free time I like to bake, take dance classes, and spend time with my friends. I am a big fan of coffee, good books, and great music!
