In my academic career, I have studied at Miami University, Boston University, and Ohio State University, where I am working on my Ph.D. in Education. I have degrees in both English Literature and English Education, and have taught at the high school and college level over the past 13 years. This combined experience has strengthened my performance as a tutor for students needing help with coursework or testing preparation.Being a teacher is what defines me. For as long as I can remember, I have been driven by my passion for education, and nothing thrills me more than seeing the spark of understanding in my students. I am grateful for these travel opportunities as well as the authentic, hands-on learning I received. My graduate program fueled my love of travel and I now have a life goal of visiting all of the US National Parks! I am well on my way, as I have already been to 23 and counting! When I am not traveling, I enjoy rock climbing, playing sand volleyball, rereading Harry Potter, re-watching Disney movies, and hanging out with my dog.I am available to tutor elementary and middle school students in math, science, social studies, English, and reading. I especially love tutoring math because there are so many different strategies you can use to solve math problems! My tutoring philosophy, like my teaching philosophy, is that everyone is capable of learning. All people have their strengths and areas where more growth is necessary, and sometimes it may take a student a bit more practice or a new strategy to become proficient at a skill, but everyone has the ability to learn and grow. I am always impressed by the students who know they need a bit more time or support to understand a concept and are willing to put in the extra work and effort in tutoring to meet their goals. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Kentucky in 2007 and my Master's of Science in Chemistry from Georgia Tech in 2010. Following graduation, I worked as a chemistry professor for 3 1/2 years at Gordon State College teaching General College Chemistry I & II (chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and physical chemistry) and Organic Chemistry I & II. For the first two years that I was a chemistry instructor I was the youngest faculty member on campus and my classes would always be among the first to fill up. In my classroom, my colleagues would describe me as being the goofiest person in the room but it was something that I found necessary to connect with my students. Being a younger professor I remember what it was like to be a student and I remember the things that truly got my attention. I would teach my classes using superheroes, football references, mythbusters, and even relate some material to the school bus. In my office hours, I would be able to find out what interested the students and come up with an example that they would be able to understand. In the sciences, I believe learning should be as much hands on as possible and I used a variety of outside resources to teach various concepts, whether it would be using balloons, dry ice, tennis balls and paper wads, or even LIGHTING WATER ON FIRE. In addition to all of the chemistry subjects (up to a graduate level), I am qualified to teach physics, algebras 1-4, geometry, pre-calculus, and can do SAT and ACT math prep.Outside of the classroom I enjoy watching football and college basketball, going to broadway shows like the Book of Mormon, Wicked, and Monty Python's Spamalot, and going to comic book conventions. After experiencing DragonCon while living in the Atlanta area, there is nothing more fun than watching people dress up in Halloween costumes when it's not Halloween. Finally, I am an avid bowler and love to cook as these are my releases when I am over stressed.
