I am currently studying petroleum engineering at The University of Houston. Although I was typically a strong student in all areas throughout high school, there were some teaching styles I encountered that complicated the material more than was necessary. In fact, I avoided certain subjects for several years simply because of one unpleasant introductory class.I believe that most students who struggle with certain academic areas are capable of doing well, but something about the process usually has to change in order to make this happen. Every person is different, and it is important to access what is actually causing the problems for that particular student. The most humorous personal example I have to tell is that I needed a tutor for Algebra I right as I was going into middle school. After that, I went on to take AP level calculus in high school and this semester I am taking the last math course required for engineering majors. I never needed any supplemental instruction after Algebra I.The problem was not that I was "not a math person" or that Algebra I was the hardest class I ever took. I had developed some bad habits and studying techniques that were proving detrimental, and had not really made a difference until I got to the new level of material. After my tutor and I identified the issues and worked to fix them, every math class became much easier.I think most students who are struggling with concepts or think they are "bad" at a particular subject are just in a situation like I was once. With a personalized approach and the right attitude, the difficulty can be overcome.

As a successful chemical engineering student, I have often had the opportunity to learn from those around me. At this point in my academic career it seems fitting to in turn provide assistance to those around me.

I moved to New York City for college when I attended Fordham University at Rose Hill in the Bronx. I pursued a double major in English and French Language and Literature, as well as a double minor in Comparative Literature and Psychology. I was blessed with the opportunity to follow my passions through study abroad programs in both London and Paris. I absolutely love to travel and certainly miss my exciting European adventures! While home in the Bronx, my most meaningful volunteer experiences were working in a Hunts Point preschool. Through my work with young children and early literacy, I developed a love for teaching. I expanded my volunteer work in education with homework help for high school students and English tutoring for college freshmen. Upon graduation from Fordham, I joined the New York City Teaching Fellowship program and began my journey to teacher certification in Special Education and English, grades 7-12. I currently work as a 10th and 11th grade teacher at a school in Queens, where I teach French, English, and U.S. History. Studying and teaching French, I learned about the frustration students feel when struggling to understand something that might literally or figuratively seem to be in another language. I carry this understanding, lots of patience, and a passion for language into my tutoring sessions. Outside of school, I love to read, have movie nights, see as many Broadway shows as possible, and travel all over NYC and NYS seeing my lovely family and friends.

Similarly, I believe that learning more about religion allows someone to gain a wider perspective of their world and the world of others, fostering empathy, compassion, and peace.

As a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) working since 1998 with children and adults with various speech and language disorders, I am very passionate about helping people improve their communication skills. Obtaining my graduate degree at the Montclair State University in Communication Science and Disorders has equipped me to work with children with special needs in the New York City public schools for the last 13 years, among other settings. As a homeschooling mom to six wonderful children, I have discovered a love for teaching reading to children. Seeing how much my students who had reading difficulties struggled with their academics bolstered my resolve to train in the Orton-Gillingham method with the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education. Being a Certified Structured Literacy Dyslexia Interventionist and a Speech Language Pathologist enables me to most effectively help students improve their reading skills, since it is necessary to have good language comprehension and word recognition skills to become skilled at reading. I believe that a good evaluation is essential in getting to know my student's current level of functioning, strengths, areas for improvement, learning styles, and motivators. Caregiver or parent involvement is another very important ingredient in the learning process. When I'm not teaching, I love hanging out with my husband and six children. I also enjoy reading, baking, and creating digital therapy and educational materials.
