I am a recent college graduate who is especially knowledgeable in the fields of both History and English. My goal is to create an environment where my students feel safe to ask questions and are excited to learn! I also have over a year tutoring college students and at risk athletes in various subjects, so I am well qualified with students who have a passion for learning and for those who don't! I am a graduate of California State University, Fullerton. I received my Bachelor of Science in Human Development with a focus on Child and Adolescent Development. Since graduation, I have traveled extensively, tutoring from many different parts of the world. I lived and worked in Thailand at an International School, which gave me much exposure to many different cultures and provided me with lots of tools on how to reach many students from different backgrounds. I am a certified Montessori teacher, as well as a certified Reading Specialist.While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about English, math, and science. I am a firm proponent of education, believing it to be absolutely necessary for an improved quality of life, and I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students. I did Master’s level work in Mass Communications at Texas Tech University and instructed college freshmen and sophomores in journalism and student publications. Being bilingual opens many doors of opportunity. I’ve used my knowledge of Spanish and communication skills to assist non-profit organizations in raising millions of dollars to help people in need. I am tutoring because it is an awesome privilege to be able to help students feel successful in gaining new knowledge or learning new skills. When students make connections between what goes on in their everyday lives and what they are learning, exciting things happen! I believe creative teaching engages a student, and when students are engaged, they are motivated to learn. Students are not simply empty vessels to be filled with knowledge. I have been a Registered Nurse for 35 years, the past ten as an instructor in a pre-licensure vocational nursing program. I have discovered that I love teaching and am currently in the process of effecting a change in my career, working to soon obtain my teaching certifications in both Science and Math. I have an extensive background in the Sciences, especially Anatomy and Physiology, as I was an instructor for that course, as well as a provider of extensive tutoring sessions for many of the concepts contained in the subject. I helped out as a general subject (math, science, history, etc.) tutor at Health Careers High School in San Antonio while I was a junior and senior as part of National Honor Society. My strong academic subject areas are math, particularly calculus, trigonometry, and algebra; although I do tutor up to all high school levels of math, computer science programming in Java, Python, or C, electrical engineering topics like circuitry or programming, and mechanical physics. I really enjoy helping other people out because my motto is "ancora imparo," or "I am always learning." So if I can always learn something, I wish to help others learn and do better as well. During my senior year of undergraduate I was a biology tutor for incoming freshman and sophomore's at the University of Houston. This opportunity showed how much of a positive impact my tutoring can have on other students lives. Them telling me how my lessons helped them understand the content at a higher level and improved their performance in class is what continues to motivate me to be an adept tutor. Since graduation I have been working as a Lab Assistant that conducts medical studies as well as working my way to medical school. Although Biology is the subject I am most passionate about I tutor wide range of subjects such as chemistry, physics, algebra, and biochemistry. I took courses for these subjects in University. Additionally preparing for medical school and studying for the MCAT has kept my knowledge on these topics proficient.
