I graduated with honors from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where I earned a dual degree in Communications and French and Francophone Studies. I am keenly passionate about education, and especially about language studies which I believe are essential to the advancement of a global society. My travels throughout Europe and Asia have inspired me as a language learner and teacher. In the course of my academic and professional career I have taught students around the world in a variety of subjects related to English and French learning. As a university student I tutored adults and children in English and French, and I have also worked as a full time ESL teacher in Korea for several years. My teaching style is very interactive; I’ve found that students learn best when they can engage with the material through active dialogue, and when they feel that what they’re learning has real world relevance. My interests include reading and outdoor sports, especially skiing and hiking which help me to enjoy the beauty of nature and give me some peaceful time for reflection.

I am a graduate student at San Diego State University working towards my MS in Bioinformatics. I completed pharmacy school and became a pharmacist in 2010. I have been working as a tutor/teacher since 2007. I have worked with students of a vast variety of age groups and subjects.I love science and I love teaching. Of all the science subjects that I tutor, chemistry is my favorite. I have studied it beyond the text books and have my own tricks and techniques to learn the material. My second favorite is math/algebra which serves as a good brain exercise. I love solving the problems, like a puzzle and most of the times do it without a calculator.I am a social person and love meeting people and talking to them on different topics. One of the reasons my students love me, is because they can talk to me, more like a friend. For my hobbies, I can do anything and everything that can keep me busy during my spare time. I am an outgoing person and have been of immense help to my students so far. It is one of the things that I am really good at, and hence proud of.

I am a graduate of Loyola University Maryland and San Diego State University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, my Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, and my Master of Arts in Liberal Arts and Sciences. During my time at San Diego State I taught in both the English, Rhetoric and Writing Studies departments and served as a writing tutor for disabled students. Thus, it is no big surprise that Composition, Literature and the Verbal section of the GRE are the subjects I tutor. Of these three my favorite subject has to be the verbal section of the GRE since there are few feelings that are better than knowing that you helped someone get into their dream school. My pedagogical style focuses on finding a student's biggest weakness and then concentrating on negating this deficiency by continuously adding little improvements each week. When I am not teaching or tutoring you can find me on a tennis court, reading a novel or hiking in the mountains.

The most important thing I've learned from my experience with tutoring and teaching is that energy, ability to connect, and character make a fantastic teacher. During my time in the corporate world, I realized that I had a genuine interest in helping everyone succeed. After some time volunteering with students, I realized that my passion was for helping students succeed. Not necessarily just earning the grades, but developing confidence and motivation to help them through their remaining academic career. After a career transition from engineering to teaching, I have felt more fulfilled than ever before. Using my real world experiences to help students make the "why do I need to learn this" connection is one of my strengths. Seeing the look on a student's face when they have that break through moment is one of the most rewarding experiences I have had in my time with teaching. The best compliment I've received from my students is that I actually take the time to find where the disconnect is and then develop that connection from an established starting point.

I started tutoring in high school when I played varsity soccer, and many of the players needed assistance to pick up their grades to remain eligible for sports. Since then, I have tutored more formally. I was a teaching assistant at Point Loma Nazarene University for both the Psychology and Spanish Departments. This involved working with students one-on-one and reviewing past course work, quizzes, and tests. I was always willing to meet with students that needed extra help. I also frequently made study guides that were easy to navigate to help students succeed.I love to tutor because it is a way to use my strengths to help others. I also highly relate to students because I am still a student. As an individual beginning graduate school, I have had to take many standardized test, such as the GRE and the ACT. I understand how frustrating they are, and I want to help others succeed.I minored in Spanish in college, and I was only a couple classes short of a major. When we were tested at the end of the program, I was placed at the "Advanced-High" level, which is one level lower than the skills required of an ambassador or diplomat. My mother speaks Spanish, so I grew up in a household where Spanish was often spoken. I also got a 5 on the AP Spanish exam in High School.I frequently utilize writing skills and am always happy to pass along pointers and edit papers. I am studying psychological research, which means I habitually write formal papers to be submitted for review. I got a 35 on the ACT and feel comfortable helping students that need assistance with writing.I took the GRE last summer after months of studying. I did not take any preparation classes. Rather, I studied myself using books and practice tests. I scored between the 86th and 93rd percentile on each section. I was able to develop many strategies for studying and assisted my friends that were taking the exam as well. I was accepted to every Masters program where I applied with my GRE scores.I am highly looking forward to tutoring!

There is nothing better than seeing a child finally understand a concept! That is what drives me; it is why I love being an educator. My background in literacy and writing, as well as my degree in Liberal Studies, helps me deliver lessons to students in different ways. Thus helping the student to understand or see the materials in different ways.

I am a secondary English education graduate from Northern Kentucky University, and am currently working on my Master's in Reading education from San Diego State University. Upon graduation, I had the opportunity to teach English at a local high school in Northern Kentucky for two years. After those two years, I knew I needed a change and decided to apply for my graduate degree at San Diego State University. Since my time in San Diego, I have had the opportunity to travel around to many different San Diego City Schools as a visiting teacher.I have extensive experience teaching/tutoring English in all ages as well as test prep and college essays. I am extremely passionate about education. I am a firm believer that every individual has the right to equal education. The power of language and the written word is vital for human survival and success. I hope that I can be there to help you become more confident in the subject of English and therefore become more confident in school and the future. While I dedicate a great amount of my life to education, in my spare time I enjoy running, hiking, yoga, healthy eating, the arts, music, and watching movies with friends and family. I also love traveling and experience new cultures. I look forward to meeting you and hopefully helping you achieve success.

I will be graduating from the University of California, San Diego this June (2014). I will be receiving my Bachelor of Arts with Latin and Departmental Honors in Literature and Writing, with focuses in education, French Literature, Literatures of the World in English, and fiction writing. I have four years of tutoring and teaching experience at UC San Diego's Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services (OASIS), both in teaching undergraduate writing workshops and working with both undergraduates and high school students in one-on-one tutoring. I have also worked extensively with ESL students and students from inner-city high schools. I tutor a broad range of subjects, including argumentative and research writing, composition, reading comprehension, beginning French, stylistics and grammar, and literature. I especially love tutoring in argumentative writing and reading comprehension, which is why I enjoy working with students on SAT Critical Reading and Writing and GRE Verbal and Writing. Watching students develop critical skills and confidence in these subjects is the best part of my job!In my years working as a teacher and tutor, I've noticed that a student's confidence in a subject is often his or her main gateway to success. As a result, I work hard to both develop that confidence and the skills required to perform well both in class and on standardized tests. I also have a dynamic teaching and tutoring style that keeps students engaged and understanding the material. I understand that for most students, school is sometimes boring; luckily, I've been trained in how to keep them interested through both connecting to my students and involving them in their learning process. I do this by structuring my lessons around discussions that do not rely only on me just giving them information (unless it is necessary), but instead help them practice the critical thinking that leads them to coming up with solutions themselves. This has proven to be more effective than the "lecture" or "knowledge dump" methods, since students can then use their learning in other subjects and essay prompts. I guide my students in how to think; I don't tell them what to think.Outside of my academic work and interests, I love running (I've run track for eight years), hiking San Diego's beautiful trails, and painting.

After graduating from UC San Diego with a Bachelor's Degree in Literature/Writing I spent two years as a Peace Corps volunteer teaching English in Ukraine. In addition to teaching fourth through eleventh graders in the classroom, I worked with motivated students individually to prepare them for academic competitions and qualifying tests for study abroad programs. I also led English clubs in the city library where I helped university students and adults improve their conversational skills and their knowledge of the English speaking world. It was an immensely rewarding and formative experience, from which I gained the ability to tailor my teaching methods to meet the needs of every individual I worked with and to overcome language and cultural barriers through patience, understanding, and a good sense of humor. While I enjoy teaching the mechanics of Englishwhether as a first language or secondmy true love is Literature. As an undergrad at UCSD I tutored small groups of fellow students in writing fiction and poetry, leading workshops and facilitating peer critique. I was also one of two undergraduate students invited to enroll in UCSD's first MFA poetry workshop. In my spare time I love to read, write, ride bicycles, hike, surf, garden, cook, and travel. This summer I went on a road trip across America that only left me wanting to see more! I also enjoy bookmaking and linocut printing, though my graphic design skills leave something to be desired.
