I am a sophomore at Johns Hopkins University studying Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. I tutor many STEM subjects, SAT/ACT prep, and AP/IB classes! In the years past, I've mentored two robotics teams and I have experience tutoring at my school and in my neighborhood. I deeply believe that an intuitive understanding of educational content is crucial to success, and I implement this philosophy by teaching problem-solving techniques and strategies in addition to the material. In my free time, I love to read, paint, crochet, and watch TV shows. :)

I'm a passionate explorer, educator, and scientist. I am a Planetary Science Researcher (PhD, 2008). I write grants to NASA to use spacecraft data to study the composition and evolution of rocky planetary bodies (Moon, Mercury, asteroids). My research is broad and interdisciplinary that equips me to tutor many subjects and also to show students connections between subjects when it improves subject mastery. I have been teaching and tutoring for over twenty years, at every level of my education and career. In high school I taught aerospace education and aviation search and rescue while I earned my pilot's license. As an undergraduate at Duke I tutored athletes in Geology, Calculus, and Electrical Engineering core courses and I was a teaching assistant for Computer Science and Linear Circuits Laboratory. In graduate school I was a teaching assistant in geology. And as a professor, I've taught undergraduate and graduate science courses at a major U.S. research university. Most recently I designed a combined English and Engineering elective to students with limited English Proficiency at a small university in Colombia.
I am an undergraduate student at the University of Chicago, working towards a pre-med double major in Psychology and Biology (with a specialization in Neuroscience). Beginning in my early teens, I began working and volunteering as a tutor in a variety of environments: I began as a volunteer at a summer program for underprivileged children at the Learning and Tutoring Center of East Austin, and since I have worked as a private elementary school tutor, a private SAT-prep tutor, and a preschool tutor for the Neighborhood Schools Program in South Side Chicago. I have taken, and succeeded in, a broad range of Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) classes, and am familiar with the latest formats, question varieties, and scoring guidelines of these standardized tests, along with the SAT. My teaching philosophy is to go beyond "teaching to the test". Although test-taking skills are crucial for any assessment, I believe the most valuable thing a tutor can do is to enhance and help develop conceptual understanding in our clients. I believe that once a student understands something at the conceptual level, he or she will be much better prepared for the topic, not only in the specific test we are preparing for, but anywhere else it may come up. Memorizing words or equations might help somebody in the short term, but understanding why that word means what it means, or what an equation is actually depicting is worth the extra effort. Besides test-prep I think I can be a great help in writing and editing, as I have experience in everything from short, timed essays such as the SAT essay, to college essays, to research papers such as the IB Extended Essay. I am fully fluent in Spanish for anyone who wishes to communicate in or practice the language.
I am a doctoral-prepared Nurse Practitioner with over 10 years of nursing experience in critical care, med-surg, trauma-stepdown, and bariatric surgery. I have had the pleasure of facilitating learning in nursing students throughout my career and enjoy every bit of it! I understand the struggles of going through nursing and NP school, studying for certification exams, as well as, gaining footing once starting out in the professional world. I am here to help you every step of the way and see myself as more of a mentor throughout the process! Lets get through the stuggles together and with success!
I am proud to say that, over the past 30-plus years, I have had many of my students go on to post-secondary education in Math, Physics, and Engineering.
I am teaching the concepts does not work for you, let me know and I will try my very best to teach students in the way they feel comfortable. Also, I am a student myself, so I know and understand the struggles of being a student. Do not worry though! I have tutored countless students ranging from grades 1-12. I have tutored middle school students for the past three years and recently began tutoring a few high school students for the SAT exam. I have received multiple mathematics awards throughout my high school years, so I am confident that I will be able to teach your student the tips and tricks around different types of math problems. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me!
I'm a educator and visual artist with many years of experience teaching and tutoring high school and college students. I have a BA in Political Science from New College of Florida and a MFA in Photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design. While I'm a photographer by trade, I also have a passion for and expertise in Math and the Natural Sciences -- as well as French and Spanish, having studied and worked in both Paris and Central America. While I'm proficient now, I struggled with both languages early on, and understand the challenges of both starting a new language and in moving from a conversational to a more proficient level. I'm also available for ACT and SAT test prep -- and work especially well with students who are visual learners (though I have a wide range of materials and resources for all styles of learning!).
I am a student at the University of North Florida, and I will be graduating with both an accounting and finance degree in December. I have always had a passion for teaching and have tutored in subjects ranging from Calculus to SAT prep. However, as a UNF tutor and SI, I primarily assisted students with accounting classes. From high school accounting to upper level college courses, I am extremely comfortable with the accounting taught in school and would love to assist any with it.
I am a recent college graduate from the University of Florida. I studied both premedical subjects as a biology major and social sciences as an economics major. I have experience mentoring elementary and middle school students in reading and math.
I am currently a student at the University of Central Florida, majoring in Biotechnology and in the Burnett Medical Scholars Program.
I am a graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a degree in Accounting. I spent the first 20 years of my career in public accounting with PwC (PriceWaterhouseCoopersLLP), including 7+ years as a a partner.
I'm a 2021 graduate of the United States Naval Academy with a Bachelors of Science in Chemistry. I've been tutoring chemistry in some form since 2017 and I am passionate about teaching! I love finding new ways to explain complex topics.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. With over 305 schools across Jacksonville's two school districts serving more than 120,000 students, Varsity Tutors connects students from all neighborhoods and school types—public, charter, and private—with tutors who understand local curriculum standards and school expectations. Whether your student attends a school in the Northside or Southside, we can match them with a tutor familiar with their specific school's approach.
Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors who are knowledgeable about Florida's B.E.S.T. standards and how they're implemented in Jacksonville schools. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows tutors to target the specific skills your student needs to master—whether that's reading comprehension aligned with grade-level benchmarks, math fluency, or writing standards—at their own pace, which research shows is far more effective than classroom-only instruction.
With an average student-teacher ratio of 18.2:1 in Jacksonville schools, many students don't get the individualized attention they need to catch up or move ahead. Personalized 1-on-1 tutoring fills that gap by providing focused instruction tailored to your student's learning style, pace, and goals—something that's difficult for teachers to provide in larger classroom settings, no matter how dedicated they are.
Jacksonville students work with tutors across all core subjects, but we see particularly strong demand for math (especially algebra and geometry), reading comprehension, writing, and test preparation for SAT and ACT. We also connect students with tutors for AP and honors-level courses, as well as specialized support for students with learning differences or those working toward advanced academic goals.
During the first session, the tutor and student get to know each other and the tutor assesses your student's current level, learning style, and specific challenges. This helps the tutor create a personalized plan aligned with your goals—whether that's improving grades, preparing for a test, or building confidence in a subject. Most students feel comfortable right away because the session is focused entirely on them, not a classroom full of peers.
Many students show noticeable improvement within 4-6 weeks of consistent tutoring, though this varies based on the subject, your student's starting point, and how frequently they meet with their tutor. The key is consistency—students who meet regularly and practice between sessions see the fastest progress. Your tutor will track progress and adjust the approach as needed to keep your student moving forward.
Varsity Tutors considers your student's school, grade level, specific curriculum, and learning needs when making matches. Tutors understand how different Jacksonville schools approach subjects and can speak to your student's teachers' expectations. We also take into account personality fit and teaching style, because the best tutoring relationship is one where student and tutor connect and communicate well.
Varsity Tutors works with families across Jacksonville with flexible scheduling and package options to fit different budgets. We can discuss your needs and create a plan that works for your situation—whether your student needs intensive support or occasional help with specific topics. Many families find that targeted tutoring saves money in the long run by helping students avoid summer school or course repetition.
