For the past two years, Ive been working as a T.A. for several writing classes at NYU, and its quickly become my favorite job. I love helping students find their writing voices. Ive been developing my own method of guiding the young reader or writer who has just begun discovering what he or she has to say, but has not yet discovered how he or she can say it. Science and math are, in fact, all around us and in everything we do and experience, from the simple physics of a subway ride or baseball game, to being able to use math to make predictions about weather or finances. I can show students how humans are part of the natural world and linked to every other living creature.Likewise, history needn't be regarded as a meaningless list of abstract dates and events that must be memorized. I can show students who don't think they care about history that all those events and dates are linked to the world we live in now. Below is a bit about my tutoring interests and experiences: I got a 1460 on my SAT with a 790 on the math section, and a 31 on the ACT. I understand all topics K-12. I have extensive experience tutoring in SAT/ACT/College Prep, Geometry, Algebra 1+ 2, Pre-Calc and Spanish. I'm natively fluent in Spanish and got a 5 on the AP Spanish and language exam and a 4 on the AP French exam. I am also a College advisor, and I edit college essays and supplements. I am a student at NYU majoring in Psychology. Outside of my studies, I spend my time training with the Army ROTC program at Fordham University. I believe that discipline and motivation are fundamentals to learning, and these are characteristics that can me taught and honed to create a successful learning environment. I want each of my students to be confident in their abilities to perform and proud of their work.

The root of the word "education" is the verb "to educe," meaning "to draw out." This is my guiding philosophy as a tutor, that it is my job to draw out of my students the best of their natural potential, creativity, and curiosity. I encourage creative problem-solving and a spirit of mutual collaboration and respect between my students and myself. I understand that my job is to ask the right questions and to listen closely enough to enable my students to arrive at their own unique solutions. Having studied Voice, Music Theatre, and Psychology at New York University, I have a passion for understanding the human experience and consider this the core of my endeavors as an educator. In addition to music and the humanities, I share my knowledge of English, Literature, and Writing - both creative and expository - with my students. And having once been an intensely Type-A over-achiever at a competitive New Jersey high school, I have a hard-won knowledge of what it takes to succeed on the SAT, primarily in the Writing and Reading portions of the exam. I am excited to tutor because I know what it feels like to get stuck and I'm happy to help people who encounter challenges in their studies. Though frustrating, there's something really valuable about these moments when you're not quite getting it. It means that by proceeding slowly and practicing a new concept or strategy you'll learn a new skill that will stick with you even more because it took some work to master. My focus in teaching is in French and, more broadly, language arts. I studied French Literature at New York University because of my passion for literature, creativity, and expression. Learning a new language opens up more than just a new literary world but also lets you tap into another set of human experiences, expression, emotion, history. I think the greatest reward in teaching French and language arts is helping a student connect with a text and gain access to someone else's experience, what someone else thought important enough to write down, and then how this connection can help reframe the reader's thinking - deepening, challenging, or shifting the ways our own thought. Apart from the study and appreciation of literature, learning a language at a linguistic level is invaluable. It promotes human connection, openness of thought, and pushes one's own capacity and diversity of self-expression.
