I live in Detroit, Michigan, but am previously from Russia. I have worked for several universities. Right now I teach at Lawrence Tech University. Helping others to be all they can be is especially rewarding for me. I love going to school and have several degrees. First, right out of high school I got my BS in Mathematics and Biology at Northwestern University; and then I went to the same university for my Masters degree. When I taught at the Wayne State University, I worked on my doctorate in math. I really believe in the power of education! In my free time I like to paint, work with polymer clay, and bead. I watch Gotham and anything on sci fi/history/discover/news channels. I like to stay at home and work or play video games. I really believe that math can be fun. There are so many ways that it can be used and applied in business and in your personal life, but many of these opportunities are lost if one has not had the wonderful experience of studying math. I'm looking forward to working with you.

My name is Ben, and I'm from Chicago. I grew up in Hyde Park, attending the University of Chicago Lab School, where I developed a deep appreciation for rigorous academic inquiry and critical thinking. After transferring from Emory, I graduated with honors from Northwestern University with dual degrees in American Studies and Political Science. I've been admitted to the University of Chicago's MAPSS program with a merit scholarship and will begin graduate studies this fall. I'm passionate about helping students find their voice, whether that's crafting compelling college essays, developing strong analytical arguments, or building confidence in standardized testing. Having navigated the transfer process myself and grown up immersed in a highly academic environment, I understand what makes applications stand out and how to help students articulate their ideas authentically. I particularly enjoy working on writing and critical reading, areas where I've seen students make transformative progress. Outside of academics, I spent a summer at Middlebury achieving B2 proficiency in Russian, played club rugby at Northwestern, and have been playing bluegrass banjo and guitar for nearly a decade. I'm currently on a gap year in London, but I'm eager to work with students and fully available to accommodate American time zones. I believe learning should be both challenging and rewarding, and I'm committed to helping each student reach their full potential.

A little bit about me: Hi! My name is Katherine, and I'm currently an undergrad at Northwestern University. I'm studying Computer Science and Economics!WHAT and WHO I tutor: I tutor ALL levels of math up to multivariable calculus and linear algebra! I have two younger siblings-- one in elementary school and one in high school-- so I feel comfortable teaching all ages!WHY I tutor math: To me, I don't really see math as an academic subject, but rather an art form. It is a universal language that everyone knows how to speak, regardless of who you are. Math is definitely NOT an easy subject. In fact, I struggled with it too. I want to teach my students not only how to cope with difficult problems, but to develop an appreciation for math.

The first time I took the SAT I actually wasn't satisfied with my score, so I spent 2 months working hard to get my score to where I wanted it to be. The second time I took the exam I saw a 200-point increase. Previously, I have had experience teaching the SSAT and the SAT. The student I tutored in SSAT successfully passed the exam is now attending a private high school abroad. I was still in middle school when I had my first story published in a professional daily newspaper, The York (Pa.) Dispatch. Seeing my byline in print reeled me in: I knew I was going to be a journalist. Since then, my passion for writing and editing has taken me to Chicago, where I graduated from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism in 2004; to Miami, where I worked as a metro reporter at The Miami Herald from 2004-2009; and most recently to St. Louis, where I am now a features reporter, editor and columnist at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. I have always genuinely enjoyed helping others -- colleagues, students, friends and family -- fine-tune their writing, whether it's a newspaper story, personal essay, fiction manuscript or science report. At Varsity Tutors, I have worked with all levels of students, from fifth-graders to college freshmen. I love words, and I try to convey that by tutoring with a sense of fun when it comes to spelling, grammar and basic writing. I also help high school juniors and seniors with their college-application essays. Depending on each student's needs, we can either start from the beginning to brainstorm ideas and craft an outline, or we can collaborate on editing and revising drafts until the essays are in tip-top shape. In this capacity as writing coach and essay editor, I can conveniently meet with students in person, via e-mail and by phone, making it easy to work with clients anywhere.

My love of teaching comes from a lifelong love of learning. As a summa cum laude graduate of Northwestern University, and a journalist with articles published in The Atlantic, Popular Science and the San Francisco Examiner before my 21st birthday, I have experienced professional success at an early age and am committed to helping other students reach their full potential in the same way I did: by tapping into their natural intellectual curiosity and drive to make the college application process a rewarding journey of self-discovery.I specialize in college prep, particularly in essay-writing and SAT prep. I have written for publications all over the United States and in South Africa, and been commissioned to write plays or a major Chicago theatre. I love teaching as much as doing, and have edited the work of writers from ages 4 to 40, worked at theatre and storytelling summer camps and taught playwriting at the college level. As one of the top 1% of scorers in the country on the SAT, PSAT and AP tests, I firmly believe that high test scores come from regular practice, and an understanding of the test's formula. As an SAT tutor, I will administer monthly practice SAT tests and help your child raise her score by methodically working through the kinds of questions and tricks that regularly appear on the test.Writing a good college essay is a blend of art and formula. Once you master the formula, you can express yourself in an authentic manner while also appealing to college admissions officials. I aim to teach your child the formula so that there is no barrier between her natural strengths as an applicant and the admissions official looking over her essay.I hold myself to a high standard. For that reason, I will often ask for feedback, and I would never bill for a lesson in which the student or parent isn't satisfied with my tutoring.I am available to work evenings from 6 pm onward, and weekends all day. I'm available to work all months of the year, and I am happy to travel to your home, or can set up appointments at a caf, library or other public space.Bottom line: Nothing gives me greater satisfaction than helping bright people communicate the best parts of themselves through writing, and through learning the tricks of the SAT trade. I'm happy to figure out effective strategies for your child that will maximize her potential without making her feel like a Common App-submitting machine. I look forward to hearing from you!

My most recent project is an AI simulation of honey bee nectar gathering, which includes a fascinating dance they do to tell other bees where the nectar is outside the hive.I enjoy the teaching part of tutoring quite a bit. Grading homework not so much! Last summer my granddaughter and I built a horse racing game with Godot, for example. My approach is to build things as the best way to learn. Computers give you that opportunity!

I have been a high school teacher for seven years, as a social studies teacher, a science teacher, and most of all a special education teacher. My passion is working with teenagers and college students, but I have also tutored elementary school students and worked in a kindergarten classroom. I have worked extensively with students who have Asperger Syndrome, Autism, Down Syndrome, and Cognitive Disabilities. Before I taught, I worked part-time at the Office of Undergraduate Admission @ Northwestern University (Evanston, IL). I am also a proud alumnus of NU, and enjoyed my time there tremendously.Over the past two years, I have worked with almost 30 high school students on the ACT in my own private practice. This is extremely rewarding for me as I am passionate about the college search process, and love helping students in their journey to find their dream school! My other interests include jet-setting all over the USA (NYC and Portland, OR are my two favorites), lifting weights, wasting away in coffee shops, following American politics, and going to concerts.I look forward to working with you and answering any other questions you may have!
