I received my M.S. in Chemistry from Northwestern University, and my B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Rochester. I believe that all students can achieve high marks in chemistry and math once they learn good note-taking skills, organization, logical problem-solving approaches, and other essential study habits. It's my job to facilitate every student's learning of subject material and instill in him or her all those skills which will increase independent learning and personal academic growth.

I believe that tutoring is one of the most useful ways that students can understand how to optimize their own learning methods is through tutoring. I have been tutored throughout my life not because I did not have faith in my abilities to succeed, but because I needed help figuring out what is my best study methods as I progressed as I grew older, classroom styles changed, and I took standardized exams. I realized that it is completely normal to need help, and am very grateful for the people who have helped me throughout my journey. My great experiences from being tutored have helped me realize that I want to do the same by passing on knowledge to those who need it the most.I began tutoring when I was a senior in high school. I tutored the ACT Science section to other high school students. One of the major concepts that I was able to help my students understand is the difference between a knowledge base and raw test taking skills. For standardized tests, I was able to help my students improve by honing in on their test taking skills and by showing them that at a certain point, memorizing terms and studying is not going to get you any far. But that is totally okay. At that point, students have to focus on raw test taking skills such as practicing speed reading while still attempting to understand the tone, focus, and gist of the passages.During my undergraduate career at Northwestern University, I was lucky enough to be able to be a Senior Mentor for the Gateway Science Workshop. I taught undergraduate students important inorganic chemistry topics on a weekly basis by going over problems and concepts. From this experience, I realized the importance of learning from others as well as the fact that there is normally more than one way to get to an answer. I saw how students have very different learning styles, and that different problem-solving techniques work better for different types of students. I hope to continue applying what I learned as I pursue my passion of tutoring others.At Northwestern, I also was able to work with an organization called MiniChefz where I led small group sessions that taught children ages 6 through 13 in low-income neighborhoods the importance of cooking and eating healthily. I taught them different types of cooking methods, cheap healthy ingredients to buy at the grocery store, and the importance of many vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients in a daily diet. I really enjoyed working with younger children and saw the importance of taking needed breaks and presenting more complicated information in a manner that is easier for them to understand and remember.So far in my career teaching and tutoring, I have loved working with my students and believe that I have been able to help them succeed. Hello!I have a Ph.D. in Psychology from CUNY and have both taught and tutored for years. I have worked with all sorts of students, from first graders to adults. My students have ranged from gifted to LD to ADHD to perfectly average. Academically, I have expertise in learning, memory, emotional processes, and behavioral neuroscience, so I am well-trained in understanding the processes that can block learning. I then earned my masters in Secondary Math Education at Northwestern University. I have taught all high school subjects (Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Algebra 2, Precalculus, AP Calculus AB, AP Statistics, and Finite Math) and prepared students for the ACT, SAT, SAT subject tests, AP exams, and college placement exams.When tutoring, I will start by showing students good examples and all the steps, but by the end of the session, the student is showing me all the steps without any assistance. We both need to be confident that the student can talk through the problem and solve it with no notes and without prompting.

I have a passion for learning and I love to spread that joy to others. I did a double major in mathematics and music at Knox College and extensively studied many core aspects of mathematics that most students never get a chance to touch. I believe that a true understanding of mathematics comes from a deeper understanding of these principles. It's more rewarding to know why mathematical principles work the way they do and be able to apply them more broadly than to simply know rote computations. I started with Varsity Tutors back in 2009 during my sophomore year as an undergrad at Northwestern University. I did take some time off from tutoring while I completed school. Chinese is my native language. I received my bachelor's degree in China. I also have two master's degrees in the USA: a master of science in law degree from Northwestern University and a Master of Accountancy from the University of Oklahoma. I am a recent college graduate who loves teaching and helping students learn. I have experience teaching English in Argentina, as well as experience as a teaching assistant for various subjects at the Summer Institute for the Gifted.Exploration drives much of what I do, and I believe that learning is a form of exploration - and I hope to share that mindset with my students.As a tutor, I will be very patient, understanding, and thoughtful in my approach.

I have recently graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in chemistry. I just started working a day job, but I would love to get into tutoring again! I tutored a bit of general chemistry in college and honestly, I loved the experience! I would love to teach chemistry and math because of my solid foundation in these subjects. I would love to be a teacher later in life, but for now, I want to focus on how far I can go with chemistry. On my free time, I love playing Ultimate Frisbee, running, watching TV, and hanging out with friends. I believe that compatibility is very important between tutor and student, so I definitely hope that I am able to communicate with some students that need help in the maths and sciences!
