I started tutoring while in college and I started teaching high school math after graduating from the University of Notre Dame with a math degree. I then earned my masters in Secondary Math Education at Northwestern University. I have taught all high school subjects (Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Algebra 2, Precalculus, AP Calculus AB, AP Statistics, and Finite Math) and prepared students for the ACT, SAT, SAT subject tests, AP exams, and college placement exams.When tutoring, I will start by showing students good examples and all the steps, but by the end of the session, the student is showing me all the steps without any assistance. We both need to be confident that the student can talk through the problem and solve it with no notes and without prompting.

I was still in middle school when I had my first story published in a professional daily newspaper, The York (Pa.) Dispatch. Seeing my byline in print reeled me in: I knew I was going to be a journalist. Since then, my passion for writing and editing has taken me to Chicago, where I graduated from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism in 2004; to Miami, where I worked as a metro reporter at The Miami Herald from 2004-2009; and most recently to St. Louis, where I am now a features reporter, editor and columnist at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. As a tutor and teacher, it is always my goal to present material as clearly as possible and, whenever possible, have students think out for themselves what the problem at hand is and what possible solutions are. I tutor test prep for the SATs and ACTs, as well as math for all ages. I excel particularly in writing and editing and love tutoring in the humanities. My teaching philosophy is one of guidance rather than direct instruction, helping students to discover answers on their own. I am very patient and understand that sometimes all it takes to understand a difficult concept is to explain it in a few different ways. We all learn differently, so I aim to develop an individualized approach for each student in order to make the most of our time together.While I am not being a tutor, I am a musician. In addition to singing, I play the violin and viola and dabble in everything from Bach to bluegrass to covers of pop songs. As an opera singer, I have studied Spanish, Italian, French and German and am accordingly fascinated by the etymology of words in my own cobbled-together language. I also have a special place in my heart for books about turn-of-the-century magicians and anything Viennese.

Johann George is classroom instructor and one-on-one tutor in New York City. He teaches SAT and ACT prep classes to 10th and 11th grade students at The Lycee Francais of New York, The Spence School, The Nightingale Bamford School, and LaGuardia High School. For the past 4 years, he has tutored hundreds of students one-on-one for the SSAT, ISEE, and SAT II Math Subject Tests (I and II). He also advises students applying to performing arts conservatories and coaches students on their college application essays. My goal as a tutor is not just to help students learn new material, but also to help them understand how to learn, study, and teach themselves things that they are having trouble with. This is something I struggled with throughout my academic career, and only through years of practice was I able to figure out new tricks and methods for teaching myself new material. I want to save this time and effort for all my students so that they can get to learning. I received a BA in Economics from Northwestern University, and just graduated in June 2016, and will tutor for Economics, the SAT, and the ACT. My interests outside of schooling include basketball and psychology!

School can be really, really hard sometimes. I'm here to make learning more enjoyable and school less stressful. I take a compassionate, empathetic approach towards tutoring. It's important to me to get to know a student, so I can best support their learning style and align learning with their interests. My teaching style is collaborative; I want students to feel in charge of their own learning.I am a graduate of Northwestern University with experience working with elementary school-aged kids. I edited the ACT prep book Up Your Score! ACT (2016-2017), which uses humor to teach test topics and is published in print across the country and on Amazon. I'm a recent graduate of Northwestern University, and have worked as a tutor for Westchester Counseling and Psychological Services and Scarsdale Recreation Camp.

I am a current first-year honors student at Northeastern University pursuing a B.A. in Political Science and a B.A. in History, Culture, and Law. I am a youth activist and have experience working for campaigns and elected officials and am particularly passionate about mental health, climate change prevention, and LGBTQ+ rights. I have done private tutoring for the past three years with students in Elementary, Middle, and High School in a variety of school subjects including but not limited to Math, History, and Writing/Grammar. I am passionate about education and want to use my skillset and knowledge to help other students achieve their best selves. I'm from Denver, Colorado, and currently live in Boston and love to read, watch sitcoms and, of course, tutor my students.
