I graduated from Columbia University with my BA in Neuroscience and Behavior as well as having completed the premedical track. Gaining this rigorous science background allowed me to pursue my love of science and medicine, and it also gave me a thorough understanding of what it takes to study and learn efficiently. For me, one form that continued learning has been conducting an extensive amount of scientific research at prominent research institutions on topics ranging from the causes of obesity to kneecap pain to why mosquitoes are attracted to some people and not others. Tutoring was my first job, and I remember how much I loved it. I tutored students from 8 years old to 18 years old, not to mention the 8 younger cousins and siblings I have. I love seeing understanding light up in a student's eyes when they understand a new concept or finally get something they've been struggling with. When they finally get something, a new path opens to them and a new possibility appears.In my tutoring, the basics are emphasized. In addition to teaching the required essay writing course for two years at Columbia, I spent a year on the faculty of Central European University in Budapest, Hungary. I have also worked in numerous writing centers in NYC. I spent the summer of my sophomore year of high school teaching at Sneh-Kunj, a school in India for students with mental disabilities. In the first few weeks at the school, a 10-year old autistic kid who did not utter a single word, but simply sat in the corner and stared off blankly into space wrote:Kill a worthless thought typed in your brainTo welcome a wise onepity the ailing personpity good utterance not understoodIt is worthy to be a wise personthan a foolish ashamed.Until then, I had been looking at this boy with pity, worry, and an inexplicable sense of shame and guilt; therefore, it was an extremely humbling moment for me to realize that I had so completely underestimated his capacity for such profound and beautiful words. I quickly realized that I was just as guilty of the snobbery that I despised in others. Yet, each day my frustrations with the systemic lack of high expectations for these students quickly melted as they proved time and again their ability to learn. My students, for the first time, took pride in their education and realized that even the ability to remember the letters A, B, and C was a monumental achievement. The summer that I spent volunteering in India ignited a passion for education that I had not realized was inside of me.After that summer, I spent the next two years tutoring students in math, science and SAT prep, volunteering at Recording For The Blind and Dyslexic, teaching at Kumon: Math and Reading learning center, and joined Empower the Children, an organization for educational empowerment. In college, I served as a Teaching Assistant for our Introduction to Psychology course and was a private tutor in statistics. Due to my passion for access equal education, I was also a leader of Project Eye to Eye, a national mentoring initiative targeted to those with learning disabilities. These marginalized students taught me about their struggles: the hours of hard work they spent doing what others do in minutes, the discrimination they faced from peers and teachers who mistook their inability as an unwillingness to learn, and the importance of support in their success stories.After college, I spent one year in India on a Fulbright Fellowship teaching English to 6th to 8th grade students at a school for underserved girls. I struggled a lot as a teacher in this environment. I had to witness the underfunded and crumbling infrastructure of the government school, had to overcome a strong language barrier, had to diminish the apathy that my girls felt for the English language, and hardest of all, had to confront the realities of how the struggling lives of my students outside of school influenced their attitudes inside the school walls.Currently I am a rising second year medical student at NYU School of Medicine. I hope to pursue a career in global health, particularly focusing on curable blindness worldwide. Although I am no longer in the classroom, the passion I have for teaching and the personal value I place on education have not left me.

I would have to say that all of my education since grade school has focused on math and science. I went to Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions in Houston, Texas. It was there that I really found my niche in both science and math, where AP Physics and AP Calculus were my favorites. I later went to Howard University, in Washington D.C., where I majored in Biology, but I later discovered that I didn't quite satiate my curiosity for science. After college, I went to school part-time, at the University of Houston. While there, I completed several classes, such as Biochemistry I, Biochemistry II, Endocrinology and Human Physiology.Soon after, I was presented with the opportunity to teach at a local charter school, here in Houston. I first taught Chemistry, as a 10th grade long-term substitute and was later asked to stay to teach 9th grade Algebra. While teaching, I focused on the various learning styles of my students and played upon that constantly. While teaching, I set a new goal to continue to teach until I retire.Recently, I received a Masters of Arts in Biotechnology from Columbia University in the City of New York. While there, I continued to fulfill my love for the sciences and took several more science classes, such as Developmental Biology, Neurobiology II, and Molecular Pharmacology. After completing my last semester, at Columbia, I found that I have taken nearly thirty science classes at both the undergraduate and graduate level. I will now use all this information to teach as an adjunct faculty, in the Biology department, at a local community college. At Columbia, I spent several semesters as a note-taker for the Office of Disability Services; i.e., in several separate classes, my notes were selected as exemplary and distributed each week to students whose learning disabilities impaired their ability to take their own notes. I also spent two years working in a lawyer's office, where I became even more rigorously organized, systematic, and detail-oriented than I had been in school. To my mind, the key to organization is to create a system with enough structure that it can be applied to almost any situation. I have always been a passionate learner. I have a Bachelors of Arts in Mathematics Economics from Pomona College in Claremont, California and am working on my Masters in International Affairs at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs in the City of New York. I have also taught accelerated mathematics (Algebra I, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus and AP Calculus BC) at the Episcopal School of Los Angeles and economics as a high school elective. I am a PhD candidate in Sociocultural Anthropology at Columbia University. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from McGill University with a double major in Sociology and World Religions, which I followed with an MA in Religious Studies. I then moved to Columbia where I completed another MA and an MPhil both in Anthropology. I have done extensive ethnographic and archival research in India with support from the Fulbright Foundation, the Wenner-Gren Foundation, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
