I then received a graduate degree from The University of Texas McCombs School of Business, and transitioned to a career in finance and manufacturing with Textron Inc. I served in multiple leadership roles within Textron's various business units which included banking and lending, leading a global manufacturing finance division, and serving as a Corporate Controller and Logistics Director. For the past five years, I have started a few different businesses with the primary entity being Black Hat Consulting Inc which provides strategic consulting services for marketing, finance, real estate clients.I have been a Chartered Financial Analyst since 2010.

I received my BA in History, English Literature and Russian Language Studies from the University of Iowa in 2007 and my PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in May of 2015 in Modern European History. I have a strong background in general European history, and have taught a variety of courses at the college level, including, but not limited to, European History, U.S. History to 1865, U.S. History from 1865 to the present, the History of Russia and the Soviet Union and general historical writing courses. As such I have extensive experience working with students both one on one and in lecture settings.As a tutor, I am not only responsible for conveying material, but also for identifying where students struggling. It is my goal that my students engage with texts more completely, develop their own opinions about historical events, and learn to question historical authors and their motivations. I graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Biology with a cellular, molecular, and developmental concentration. I grew up in Houston, TX and started tutoring during high school for students struggling with the math and science portions on the TAKS test. I discovered quickly that I really enjoyed working with others and can creatively think of different ways to explain key concepts to make them easier to understand. I continued this passion when I went to Austin for college, working as an undergraduate researcher, mentor, and preceptor for biochemistry. Following graduation, I decided to postpone my plans of going on to medical school to become part of the AVID program. Being a chemical engineering and Economics senior, I am very well poised at many concepts within these faculties. Also, I am well trained in introductory corporate finance and accounting, from one of the most prestigious schools in the United States for Finance (McCombs School of Business). More than twenty years ago, the year I was born, my father underwent a coronary artery bypass graft procedure and almost died due to unforeseen complications. My mother would tell me how lucky I was to have even met him. He has a twenty-five year history of poorly controlled diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia and throughout my childhood I witnessed firsthand the suffering that these comorbidities caused himand in effect, our family. I accompanied my father numerous times to the emergency department and doctor appointments then, and continue to do so. I called 911 and then rode along with him in ambulances as he complained of severe chest pain and dyspnea. Witnessing my dad being brought out on stretchers countless times made me feel helpless but motivated to investigate the intricacies of his diseases. In medical school, my curiosity for understanding these disease processes only grew as I learned about the complex interplay between comorbid pathologies. As an internal medicine resident, I will further dedicate my career to the physiology, treatment and management of patients suffering from these distressing, and often overlooked illnesses.During my internal medicine core and sub-internship, we dealt with patients with multiple comorbidities and non-communicable, chronic disease. For example, there was a fifty five year old African American man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes mellitus, heart failure, uncontrolled hypertension and, chronic renal failure on hemodialysis who presented with shortness of breath and bilateral leg edema. I noticed the patient guarding the upper right side of his abdomen; I performed a complete physical exam on him, but focused on that. He had upper right quadrant tenderness on palpation, which I reported to my attending. I suggested that it could be congestive hepatopathy due to right-sided heart failure along with his bilateral leg edema, and that we should order an echocardiogram to evaluate his heart further. This showed that his ejection fraction had reduced significantly from his prior records to less than 35%. From speaking to the patient further, I gathered he had been skipping his furosemide dose because of increased urination, which he had not admitted to until now. As a team, we formulated a plan that involved patient education, optimizing his medication, and the placement of an AICD. I felt a sense of gratification, knowing my thorough physical exam, detailed history and, education on AICD usage helped improve this patient's management and quality of life. Experiencing how the interactions between these disease processes manifested in this patient ensures that me that there will always be more to learn. I experienced also, how important interactions with specialists such as endocrine, cardiology, pulmonology and nephology were, as they added depth to management to the patient. For me, he was a patient who typified my experience in internal medicine.In addition, I find internal medicine to be a very emotionally rewarding field, because of the moments of comfort a physician can provide, in critical moments. I recall, for example the hospital course of a sixty-year-old Caucasian female patient with cervical cancer and metastasis to the brain. She was refusing to eat and had no family to support her during this time. The attending, residents and nurses all had tried to convince her to eat but had little success. I imagined myself in her shoes and started to empathize some of the feelings she must have been experiencing. I sat by her bed, just to keep her company. After two hours, she eventually opened up to me and confessed that she was scared she was going to die and had given up on life. I began to spoon feed her banana pudding and I still remember her smile to this very day. Though I will have different availabilities with regard to time, as a resident, I know that I will strive to create the emotional space for such connections with patients in residency and afterwards.With the knowledge and experience I gain from your residency program, one day I hope to become a hospitalist and then pursue a fellowship in cardiology or endocrinology, so I may provide this specialized care that patients in urban areas so desperately need. I plan to take an active role in research during residency, specifically in cardiovascular health, and find a program that supports such endeavors with state of the art facilities. I also am interested in program with protected didactic time so that I may continue to advance my knowledge and develop my clinical skills in a structured manner. Having rotated at an urban hospital New York, I look forward to working in a similarly culturally diverse environment to provide the finest patient centered care, and learn the most from cases, while also serving an underserved, and marginalized population. It is with this vision I hope to be a great addition to your residency program and be given an opportunity to manage complicated patients, where once I was merely watching diseases progress in my father.

My name is Maisha and I am a graduate of Biology from UT Austin. I have a passion for learning and sharing this enthusiasm with others. I don't believe that education is restricted to the classroom-learning happens everywhere and throughout our lives. I hope to help students use what they learn to help them succeed outside of the classroom and well into the future. My favorite part about teaching is trying to help students overcome the fear and failure that can sometimes be associated with learning. And the amazing part about tutoring is that it's a two way street: I learn from my students just as much as, if not more than, they learn from me. In addition to my Biology degree, I also hold a UTeach composite science teaching certification obtained from UT's nationally recognized teacher preparation program. I student taught Integrated Physics and Chemistry at McCallum High School and stayed there to teach Aquatic Science and AP Biology for two more months. Three decades programming for a living. The last two decades included instructing employees on technical and task specific skills. Mathematics is the bedrock of programming and I often apply math to determine what I assumed to be true just wasn't so.

I didn't even consider going to college initially. I worked at KFC as a senior in high school, I was being offered my own store with a salary of 40K, I wasn't even thinking college was an option. Then one fateful day I met with my guidance counselor and she told me about the top ten percent rule. I was in the top ten percent and had the opportunity to go to any Texas school I wanted. Even after finding that out, I was considering not going. However, once I looked at where I was and where I wanted to be, there was no way going to KFC straight out of high school, was going to open to doors I needed opened to be successful.I applied to multiple schools, but once I got into UT, I was set. I didn't want to go anywhere else. I came in as an Education major, changed to sports medicine, then finally settled on Government. I chose government because of all the exposure to that sort of material at my magnet high school in Dallas. I figured my familiarity with the subject would allow me to get a better GPA, which would help me to go to a better law school. I excelled in government classes, as well as Philosophy courses, which led me to making Philosophy my minor. I was very active on my University campus, and lent myself out as a resource to other students in the event they needed assistance or advice.I finished up undergrad in May 2011, and then immediately went into law school at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Urbana. I studied law generally and had an extended focus on litigation. Litigation is the art of courtroom lawyering. I loved that area of the law because I felt that is where the law was meant to be handled. I have a passion for being able to get people to understand complex information in a short amount of time. You don't have a jury's attention forever, you need to be able to get to the point and be understood on the first go round.I graduated from law school in May 2015. It was a tough process, but I made it. I am now working and saving money so I can be able to register for the bar exam and become a practicing attorney. Additionally, as a member of both Chinese Honor Society and French Honor Society, I have tutored high school and middle school students in both languages. I am a third year Mathematics Major in The University Of Texas at Austin. I ran a free prep class for the AP Calculus AB and the AP Calculus BC test in my public library in New Jersey. I ran the class for two years and enjoyed teaching my students the essentials needed for these two tests. As the head teacher I had a lot of responsibilities such as making mock tests, making sure every student understood all the content, Organizing each class day every week, and getting assistant teachers to help me out for free. After spending ten years away on the East Coast, I am excited to be home in Texas getting my PhD in Middle Eastern Literature at the University of Texas at Austin. Not many people can say that they have a view of another country from their back yard, but I can! Being born and raised in El Paso, Texas, many cultural doors were opened for me at a young age. I look for fun and creative ways to help my students internalize the language. There are so many ways to practice a foreign language and I would love to share my special techniques with you! Being bilingual has enriched my life in so many ways. I hope that with my help, this beautiful language opens doors in the future for you as well!

I attended the University of Texas at Austin for my undergraduate studies, where I found my passion for the natural sciences. As I found ways to make the material more comprehensible, I was able to help my classmates and eventually decided to tutor. After spending over two and a half years tutoring in college, I went to medical school at UTMB and started tutoring first-year medical students during my second year. My passion for tutoring comes from seeing the confidence that I can help bring out in the learners I work with as I see them take a previously confusing or challenging topic and make sense of it. I particularly enjoy the natural sciences because of the elegantly consilient way that different subjects intertwine.If you find yourself not quite understanding the material as much as you would like for topics such as biology, chemistry, or physics, I may be able to help you. Furthermore, I also have experience tutoring for the MCAT and would be happy to spend some time discussing what I've learned applying to medical school and residency afterwards. I moved to Chicago for residency training with a dual specialization in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, currently in my third year. And although it's different in some ways from Austin, I love exploring Chicago and finding fun new and fun things to do!

I got my degree at UT Austin in Computer Science. I have tutored on and off for over 15 years in ESL and various math subjects. I enjoy tutoring in Geometry because it has hands on activities and is a practical way of learning to draw. Besides math and computer programming, I enjoy doing electronic projects.

I am a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin, where I received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and minored in Mathematics. Upon graduating, I moved to Dallas to begin working as a financial professional with Prudential, a career that allows me to combine my love for problem solving and directly interacting with individuals to help improve their lives. I grew up with a mom who teaches middle school math and she instilled a love for both the subject and helping others that has stuck with me to this day. During my time in college I gained experience tutoring both middle and high school math and economics, along with college level calculus. I enjoy getting to help students overcome struggles in their work, and have found that it is often encouragement and direction most needed to help them succeed. I firmly believe that education is necessary for improving the quality of ones life and enjoy getting to help others in a way that will impact the rest of their lives. During my spare time, I enjoy reading on a wide variety of subjects and genres, along with running, spending time outdoors, and watching basketball, baseball, and football.

I am a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Art History and Arabic. Since graduation, I have studied Arabic intensively in Morocco for a year, and I also was an English teacher in Turkey this past year as a Fulbright Scholar. I have 3+ years of working with students of all ages and backgrounds. I tutor Arabic, Essay Writing, English, Art History, and SAT and ACT prep. I am most passionate about Art, English, History, and Arabic. I try my best to focus on the student's academic needs and encourage them to take an active role in their learning.

When I tutor, I hope to impart more than knowledge. I strive to teach new and efficient ways of thinking, as time is an invaluable part of our lives, be it personal or work related. Over the course of over 9 years, I have tutored children and adults, learning how to adapt to each learning style. As long as the student who comes for help is dedicated, I believe I can transform dedication into success.
