AP English Literature and Composition Tutor • +35 Subjects
As a tutor, I find that if we know a little bit about each other as people, then we work better during sessions, so I'll go ahead and give you some background on myself. I have received a B.A. in English from Truman State University, where I also minored in Theatre. I currently attend graduate school for Library and Information science, as well as working at the local library and, hopefully, tutoring you! I have mainly had tutoring experience in essay writing, specifically at the college level, through working at Truman State's writing center; there, I also had ESL training and worked with many students on improving basic English writing skills. I tutor in English/Literature, Grammar/Mechanics, Essay writing, and AP Lit/SAT test prep. I don't necessarily have a favorite subject to tutor, but what I do enjoy most is talking about novels and passages and being able to help a student really break down their writing. My tutoring philosophy reflects this as well, as it hinges mostly on respecting the student's autonomy in their work. I am here as a guide for you, but my goal is never to tell you the answer outright or tell you the perfect thesis statement. I will be looking to aid you in getting to be the best you can be on your own. In my personal time, you can usually find me reading genre novels/manga, creating some sort of art, watching movies, or playing TTRPGs. While I don't consider myself an artist, I do think I'm artistic, so I really mesh with creative people; I'll also talk your ear off about wrestling or football, too, so don't worry too much if the interests I have here don't seem your style. I am all about making each individual session work for each individual student, and we will perfect that process together!

Hi! I'm a freshman at Syracuse University, majoring in History and Political Science (both with concentrations in America) and minoring in Psychology. I have plans to attend law school once I graduate to study civil rights litigation. Someday I even hope to run for political office!I'm quite the busy bee, and I love it! I thoroughly enjoy having a jam packed schedule, it helps me manage my time better. On campus I'm on the executive board for the Syracuse Animal Rights Organization. Activism was always something I dabbled in, but being apart of this club has really helped me grow as not only an activist, but as a person. I'm also a DJ at two radio stations on campus (you should DEFINITELY tune in) and I'm apart of the Advocacy Committee for Syracuse University's branch of UNICEF. Next semester I'll be doing all of that AND picking up a local political office internship as well as hopefully assisting with psychology research with one of my professors! I have such diverse interests that we're practically bound to have something in common! In my little free time I can be found binge watching The Office and Parks and Rec on Netflix and drinking as much coffee and tea as humanly possible.I have big aspirations and I'm constantly striving to make them a reality, but I also really love helping people. In fact, it's one of my favorite things to do. I try my best to do it as much a possible through volunteer work and tutoring. I used to tutor when I was in high school to fellow students in algebra, statistics, english, and history. When your student finally gets it, and they have that "eureka!" expression on their face, it truly makes it all worth while. As you can probably tell I'm a pretty friendly, quirky, and open person, and if I do say so myself I think we'd be a great fit as tutor and tutoree!

I am currently a biology major at UT Dallas and will graduate this May. Becoming a physician has been a lifelong dream of mine. I am excited to begin medical school at UT Southwestern next fall.I would love to help others who are pursuing a similar path and need SAT or MCAT tutoring. I have been tutoring students for the SAT since high school. My tutoring style is interactive, as I like to guide students through problems until they are confident with the material on their own. I'm looking forward to getting to know my students and helping them achieve their goals! In my free time, I love to dance, play the piano, and watch movies with friends.

Hello, my name is Sam and I am an accounting major at Loyola University Chicago. I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri before moving to Chicago. I decided to move here because of the vast career opportunities in accounting. I became a tutor because I have always enjoyed helping my fellow classmates with their homework. My personal goal in tutoring is to not only aid students in learning material, but also teach them how to learn material on their own.

I have lived on 4 different continents and it has both been a challenging and amazing experience. My interest in education sparked from moving so much and exploring different school systems and ways of learning.I have two Bachelor's degrees, in Biology and Philosophy from Barry University in south Florida, and a Master's in Bioethics and Society from King's College London in the UK. During the day I am a research assistant and work on several different projects ranging from philosophical bioethics, to science advice, and laboratory biomedical research (infectious disease). When I am not working I am involved in community service or my own creative enterprises. While new here on Varsity Tutors I have been tutoring and teaching in person and online for about 7 years. I was a teaching assistant in college for a year and held private French lessons to elementary school kids for 2 years. I have also spent two summers teaching full-time high school courses in the sciences, social studies, and philosophy.I am super enthusiastic and passionate and would describe my approach to teaching as student-centered. I emphasize immersion, hands-on activities, skill and aptitude development, and critical thinking over mere memorization and regurgitation.I am aware that exam prep and testing can be a real cause of stress for some students, I always strive to tailor my teaching style with strategies to build confidence and help students feel more mindful, relaxed, and proficient.I am comfortable working with grade school students, undergraduates, and as well as adult learners.I am only available to tutor online, my subjects include science, AP and IB Biology, undergrad biology courses, Philosophy (AP, IB, and undergrad), English Literature, French K-12 (C'est ma premiere langue! It's my first language!).I am also a freelance content writer and editor and will be happy to use my experience to help with your English lit assignments, essays or thesis as well as college /scholarships/grad school applications. I find that there is nothing more fulfilling on this earth than to help another person do, achieve, and become better. I hope I can also support you on your journey!

Writing is like a building project: you need ideas and vision to come up with the design. Then you need a solid foundation poured. After that the construction of story after story. Then the details that take it from a mere building to one that no one forgets. Once it's polished up you open the doors and let everyone in.

Hi! I'm Sophie, and I'm a medical student with a passion for teaching. I want to work with patients, but my other goal is to go into academic medicine. I can't picture my present or future without education in it. I began tutoring for my little sister when both of us were in high school, helping her with math, English, science, and Spanish. In college, I started branching out to tutor friends. In 2019 I began volunteer tutoring for my college's chemistry department, and soon after, I took on a job at a local tutoring center teaching biology and chemistry (and occasionally physics and math) to high school students. Since taking the MCAT and scoring 99th percentile, I started tutoring for that as well. Biology and chemistry are my main teaching areas: chemistry because I've had the most tutoring experience in it, and biology because I have practical experience through lab research and patient care. I can also teach math or physics (I used to be an engineering student so I know those subjects well). I pride myself on bringing a real passion for the subjects I teach. I also strive to abolish simple; disjointed memorization and help my students see their subject matter through a logical, problem-solving oriented lens. I look forward to learning with you!
