Some subjects/topics can be difficult, but sometimes looking at the problem in a different way makes the material clearer and easier. My basic learning and teaching philosophy has always been that the best way to handle difficult material is to take your head off the page and to try to reframe the question in a different way. Coming to a problem - whether it be an essay, a math question, or a writing exercise - with a different frame of mind can help make learning fun and rewarding. I have over five years experience tutoring both groups and individuals and have taught all ages (my youngest student was 5 years old and my oldest student was 71!). I think it's important that both the student and the tutor feel comfortable and ready to learn - the best way to learn is with an open mind.

My interest in tutoring started in college. After a confusing lecture, I would often go 1-1 resources like office hours or TA help sessions. Here, I would be able to ask questions that clarified topics that would otherwise take me much longer to understand. Often I would relay this information to my friends, and I felt a sense of fulfillment in teaching it. Being able to help someone along to their "a-ha!" moment and share in that experience has been one of the greatest joys of teaching. In addition, doing so not only helped them, but also myself in solidifying my understanding of the material.This led me to take on various roles as a TA, both in 1-1 and in group settings later in my college career. My responsibilities ranged from weekly 1-1 sessions with multiple students to giving a review session to a large lecture class.Outside of academics, for all four years I have tutored middle/high school students in music in a 1-1 setting. This was through one of Yale's Dwight Hall service/outreach program. What interested me in tutoring music was the same sense of fulfillment, being able to watch someone progress overtime and see their face as they learn something new and enjoy it!

I like math and the critical thinking that it involves. I see math problems as little puzzles to be put together and solved, and puzzles are also one of my favorite hobbies. Math problems can often be solved in more than just one way, and finding different ways to solve one problem is something that always keeps math interesting for me. Math, in my opinion, is one subject that can help develop the ability to see different perspectives of a single situation.I am a certified Texas Teacher. I have taught math in K-4 and in high school. I have also taught special education in these grades, as well. Reading and writing education are also on my list of strong points.I am a good tutor because I strongly think that with proper attention and patience, all students can understand and dominate math.

I am a 4th year student at The University of Chicago majoring in Economics. I recently completed all of my coursework and am now filling my time with the activities I most enjoy. One of these activities is teaching. At the beginning of this academic year, I joined an organization on campus that teaches juniors and seniors at a local high school about community engagement through the lens of philanthropy. Through this, I have the unique opportunity to empower students to become leaders in their community; to provide them a platform to change issues about which they are most passionate. This experience inspires my desire to educate young students; to provide them the tools to be leaders, whether that be in the classroom, on the playing field, or in their community. My time as a youth soccer coach and tutor of my little brother and his friends has further bolstered my love of teaching. Given my extensive experience and longtime passion for math and applied math subjects, I feel I can best help students seeking help in these areas, though I have experience in a broad range of subjects. Outside of teaching, I enjoy playing soccer, basketball, guitar and piano, as well as cooking, hiking and listening to podcasts.
