I was a teacher for 13.5 years, teaching grades 5-12. I have loved it, but I needed a change of scenery, so I left to pursue another career. However, I feel that I am not finished teaching completely and I hope to have a positive impact on students by tutoring them when they are struggling. I know learning another language is challenging, but it can also be so much fun and can open up so many doors for a student!In my spare time, I love to travel (either long or short trips), read , work out, cook, and spend time with family and friend. I am actually a marine science major, but among all my lab reports and data collection, I needed a humanities outlet. My natural reading and writing ability have always been able to give me a different perspective on the sciences. However, because of my strength in language, I've always struggled in math. I was lucky enough that I didn’t hate it, and could continue my education all the way into college, and then into Germany. Besides being a German major at college, I have lived in Germany for a full year as a visiting student at the Free University Berlin. Having had German roommates, classmates, and close friends, I fell in love with Berlin that year. I will be going back there to continue my studies next year.As a speaker of three languages, I spent a long time thinking about how to phrase things in different languages, that I can better imagine what a learner is going through in their mind. This helps me explain concepts in ways that would fit the already-existing thought processes the learner has in mind. I believe everyone can learn a language, but not everyone may not teach effectively, as it takes empathy to get to someone's head. A common problem with learners is that they form sentences in ways they would in their native languages. With a little guidance, learners can easily correspond expressions in their native languageAs a tutor, I tutored for the German department at my school at the beginner and intermediate levels. Due to my formal education in the language, I am familiar with a variety of textbooks that might be needed on the way. But I primarily like using more conversational methods, especially with higher level students, because I find engagement on a more creative, personal level more efficient than following written exercises from a textbook. I try to use interesting material for this purpose, such as news articles, interviews, and elements of social media.

I also attended UT-Austin for my undergraduate years, where I majored in psychology, minored in sociology, and received a creative writing certificate. I have worked at the University Writing Center at UT for the past year, where I tutor undergraduates in writing skills. I review papers in all subjects and of all types, including research papers, lab reports, persuasive essays, creative writing, and post-undergraduate school applications. I also worked with Communities in Schools at a Title I elementary school on writing, grammar, reading, and comprehension. Writing and English are my favorite subjects to tutor because I love to see the satisfaction on a student's face when they can finally take all of the puzzle pieces of ideas floating around in their head and put them in a tangible form. Getting those thoughts on paper proves to a student that their words are worth being read and heard. I am currently accepted to return to KU in the summer of 2015 to obtain a second bachelors degree, a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Bioscience.During my time at KU I worked in the Undergraduate Biology Department in the Human Anatomy Cadaver Lab and Lecture as a Student Teacher. For the human anatomy cadaver lab, along side 4-5 other student teachers, taught the lab in it's entirety. We did this by teaching each specific anatomy unit on our own cadavers to students separately. I also held office hours for the human anatomy lecture, aided students in office hours, helped write test and quiz questions, lectured to over 400 students, and graded exams. Aside from being a student teacher, I also did private tutoring for human anatomy and physiology for a year while at KU.I tutor for human anatomy, physiology, and basic biology. Of these subjects my favorite subject to tutor is anatomy, or combined anatomy and physiology. I am very passionate about these subjects not only because of my experiences at KU, but what could be more cool than learning about subjects that apply directly to your own body. I think it is important that people have a general understanding of how their bodies are put together and work, and I take pride in being able to help others gain this knowledge.
