10th Grade Tutor • +117 Subjects
I graduated from Columbia University in 2011 with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering. I was always a straight-A student,\ but needed help when it came to standardized testing for college admission, especially the verbal sections. I attended two years of prep school and eventually obtained a 2200. My biggest takeaway was the way I learn and retain information. I believe what makes me unique as a teacher is that I take the time to understand the needs of my students, work with them to come with a learning strategy that works for them, and create a measurable objective to work towards. The most daunting goal can be obtained with the right planning and cooperation. By showing the students that I am willing to work hard, I believe it motivates them to try just as hard.

AP Studio Art: Drawing Tutor • +7 Subjects
I believe Art is a way of communicating ideas, emotions, and thoughts that would be difficult to express in other ways. Through the course of my artistic pursuits, I have gained an understanding of how art can affect even the most inexperienced artist in a positive and everlasting way. According to Barnes-Smith in expressive arts as a means of increasing well-being in children, "[Art] provides the opportunity for individuals to explore their emotions and inner selves in order to deal with stress, explore issues, and improve self-esteem through healthy and creative modes" (Barnes-Smith et al., 2015, p. 5). I believe this as I have experienced it in my own life. One of my goals is to share this knowledge and to help others experience the powerful healing attributes of art in all its forms.

Uchenna

Hey I'm Uchenna! I'm from Beltsville, MD and I currently am taking a year off between my third and fourth years at the University of Michigan Medical School to do biomedical research at the NIH. I also graduated magna cum laude from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) with a B.S. in Biochemistry and a minor in Psychology. I have quite a few years of tutoring under my belt as I tutored for about 3 years when I was at UMBC. And although I had no formal tutoring positions in medical school, my classmates and I constantly taught each other our material and various concepts. I love tutoring because I know trying to be successful in your coursework can be difficult and when you can help someone throughout that journey, it truly is beneficial for both tutee and tutor seeing the mutual satisfaction in that person's progress.I have always been fairly good at math and this was no different on the SATs. Through hard work and preparation, the SAT math section proved to be my best individual score with a 760. I also took the Math Subject Test and did well on that as well. I have an extensive background in mathematics from algebra, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, and calculus from the elementary up to college-level difficulty and I make it my goal to help students understand what sometimes does feel like another language of numbers.Throughout my entire life I have always been passionate about science. It is what eventually led me into pursuing a Biochemistry degree in college and ultimately the field of medicine. I have always understood scientific subjects well and naturally, it helped me tutor a variety of subjects (chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, physics, etc.) in high school and college. I believe that your progress in science courses depends on learning fundamental concepts and constantly building on them which is something I always strive to do and work with tutees on.Please don't hesitate to reach out! I would love to help you in whatever STEM or test prep class that I can to help you reach your goals. I will do my best to respond promptly as well. Looking forward to working with you!

It is very easy to become stationary in life; comfort is the greatest enemy to progress. As a non-traditional student, I went back to school at 30. Coding didn't come easy to me, but with great effort and never giving up; I was able to accomplish my dream. I would love to give back to society and help you overcome any potential learning curves. Patient, loving, caring individual.

Welcome to Varsity Tutors! I am a teacher and a mother, and between the two callings, I am an experienced therapist, nurse, cook, negotiator, conflict resolution expert, and patient instructor among other talents. Children know when someone truly respects them, values them, and has THEIR betterment as their own personal goal. I am patient, intelligent, creative, and caring. Aside from my vast Pre-K teaching experience, I have years of substitute teaching experience, tutoring experience, and have even assisted individuals in passing their U.S. Citizenship/Naturalization Tests. I have taught thousands of people, from age 3 to age 30! The fact that I am trilingual (English, Spanish, German) has come in very handy over the years. Throughout my life I have possessed the ability to be a mentor, friend, protector and teacher of children. I understand and respect the importance of family; after all, we hold the same values and goals!I hold a B.A. in Psychology and English from Drew University in Madison, N.J. and a Standard Teaching Certification from St. Peter's College in Jersey City, N.J. I have degrees in both computer science (B.S. from the University of Massachusetts) and physics (M.S. from Creighton University and Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico.) I have taught college level physics and astronomy for the past fifteen years as an adjunct lecturer, while at the same time participating in various research projects as a research scientist/software developer. My favorite programming language is Python. I enjoy tutoring students in a wide variety of scientific and technical disciplines, including: physics, astronomy, mathematics, and computer programming. As regards my teaching philosophy, I believe in building on what a person already knows, teaching general principles first and then focusing on how they apply in specific instances, and ensuring that once students grasp a particular concept, they also become confident in their ability to solve similar problems on their own.In my free time I enjoy running, practicing Yang Style T'ai Chi, reading, and spending time with my family.

I've loved working with children for the last 10+ years. Even through my adolescent years I found my love for working with children as a cheerleader coach, bible school teacher, elementary schools intern and middle school tutor. Through college, I loved being a nanny to wonderful families in the community. I was able to practice teaching techniques I was learning through my studies with these children and loved watching them grow. I have found this love for helping students learn as a certified Florida elementary school teacher. As a teacher, it is important to me to create an environment of love and respect between the entire classroom. My goal for every student to is instill a love for learning with an independent work ethic and strong ability to preserve through struggles not just in school but as they continue through life. In my free time, I enjoy yoga, baking, being outdoors and being with family.
