ACT Prep Tutor • +16 Subjects

I am a senior graduating from Yale University this spring with a major in Music. I graduated from high school at Sidwell Friends in 2015, where I was academically focused on math and physics. I also prepared for and took the ACT in my senior year. I'm ready to help students with any of these subjects, particularly ACT test prep, math, or writing, a favorite hobby of mine. I know what it's like to be eager about learning, but not have the natural ability to be a fast learner, and I'm ready to share the tips and tricks that I've gathered with other students who want to become better learners as well. In high school, I spent much of my time working with the arts through choruses, drama, and dance; I was also a member of multiple athletic teams and the co-head of the GLSBT+ Alliance. Needless to say, I needed to find a balance between work and play! In college, I continue to be involved with music as a member of Doox of Yale, a TTBB a cappella group, where I served as Music Director my sophomore year. I have served as a Communication and Consent Educator, working with various programs to promote a positive sexual climate on campus, and am currently a First-Year Counselor. Next year, I will join the faculty at Phillips Exeter Academy as a choral assistant.

I am going to school at Hofstra for my Master's degree in Forensic Linguistics. I've been tutoring just about everything except music theory over the last six years, and I find it really fulfilling.Call me a nerd, but I love learning. I spend a solid amount of time reading articles about Physics, Linguistics, Math, and international events. Being able to relate study material to the real world is imperative! I'm well equipped to answer the question "When will I ever need this?" in a satisfying way. I don't expect you to geek out to the degree that I do, but enthusiasm is contagious and it's my job to make sure that you enjoy learning!I was one of those kids who never had to try or study and still got As all through high school. I was in for a big surprise in college. The circumstances that allowed me to succeed through high school changed when I went to college. When you don't have class seven hours every day, you don't have good friends to help explain things, and you never had to study outside of class it's really easy to get overwhelmed quickly. I found out that regardless of how quickly you pick up on things, there are good study habits and bad study habits. Good habits can make even the most challenging tests cower in fear from your knowledgeable prowess, but bad habits can set you up for perpetual under performance and unnecessary stress. I'm not just tutoring to help you learn a concept, I'm also teaching you the skills so you can ultimately teach yourself effectively. Some people thrive in large classes, but most don't. It's ideal to work one-on-one so you don't get bored with the easy concepts and the challenging concepts are set up so you're eager to solve the problem instead of drop-kicking your book in frustration. Learning shouldn't be frustrating, and I'm here to help work through the material in a way to makes sense TO YOU, not to a class of 30 students collectively trying to stay awake.

I received my BFA in Dance with a minor in Mathematics from Fordham University and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. I am thrilled to be carrying my love for mathematics into the future in the form of tutoring. There are few things more beautiful or satisfying to me than the way complex equations break down into simple, easily solved calculations. My goal in tutoring is to ease the stress that frequently occurs when a student encounters a difficult problem and to show students how to put equations into terms with which they are familiar.

I get it. School can be hard. It gets frustrating when you are working your hardest, trying to learn and it's just not clicking for you. You might have great teachers who are able to help you and guide you through it, but then again, you may not. Sometimes you just need a place to come and ask the questions you can't ask in class, and to trust that the person on the other end will be there to answer your questions and help you. I am that person!I've been a classroom teacher since 1994, teaching high school math and physics. I've taught the same subjects at an online school since 2000. I've worked with students across the country and around the world. I'm National Board Certified, the highest level of professional certification a teacher can achieve in the US.But just knowing math isn't enough for a tutor. I get the struggle, and I get the fear you may have about asking for help. So we will get to know each other before we dive into the help you need. I am curious to know more about your school setting, how you learn, and what is keeping you from learning the way you want to. When we are ready to get to work, I will know enough about you, and I hope, you will know enough about me, that we can trust one another and work together to get you to where you want to be. If you are willing to ask your questions, I will show you how to answer them.I look forward to meeting you and to helping you achieve your goals at school!
