I am a graduate of Denison University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, with minors in Spanish and music performance. Throughout high school and college, I have been tutoring my peers in Spanish, English, philosophy, math and even music theory. I have also tutored adults in GRE subjects. Since graduation I have been helping Spanish-speaking children in DC with their English and working at a lobbying firm. I tutor in a variety of subjects, focusing on Spanish, English, Math and Standardized Tests. I tutor in a fun, competitive and encouraging style, often comparing learning to reaching a new benchmark in a sport, or leveling up in a video game. I spend most of my free time playing soccer, singing and playing chess.

My tutoring goals are not only to help students improve their academic work, but also empower them to independently produce better results in the future. I have experience tutoring students in different age groups, from elementary school to graduate school. As a tutor at my college's writing center, I assisted in leading a workshop discussing best strategies for ESL tutoring. Having studied both Spanish and Japanese, I understand the difficulties of learning a new language and am excited to help students master English writing, speaking, and grammar.

I am a sophomore at Georgetown University studying Spanish and Justice and Peace Studies, working toward a Bachelor of Arts degree. I love having the opportunity to assist my peers or younger students in subjects like English, Spanish, and Linguistics due to my own personal love for learning, and my teaching style is very collaborative to allow students to feel comfortable and supported in their learning. Spanish is my absolute favorite subject to tutor because I fell in love with the language and culture, and I would love to be able to help other students do the same. In my spare time, I love to read, write, and play with my pets.

I recently received my masters at the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University, and I grew up in Washington, D.C. I went to college at Georgetown University and have loved reading and writing my entire life. While I enjoy tutoring all kinds of essay skills, english literature is my favorite. I love poetry, plays, and fiction classics -- everything from Shakespeare to Shelly! My dad is a lawyer, and has taught me the value of strong argumentation skills. I have published everything from short stories to journalistic articles, in my college paper or at The New York Times. Most students come to me for my encouraging spirit and fun attitude because I always want to make learning a positive experience. Writing an essay or dissecting a book really boils down to the art of storytelling -- and I think, no matter your age, we all can appreciate to the transformative power of stories. Not everyone finds their words easily, and some even feel ashamed to take time to express themselves. But I was a ballet dancer for ten years, and I think my rigor, determination, and sense of balance passes on to my students. I like to explore the city with my friends, see a play on the weekend, or take a book to central park for an afternoon of reading.

Hello, I'm Alicia, a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, and graduate student in Writing at Columbia University. In May of 2011 I received my Bachelor's in Comparative Arts, a unique interdisciplinary program offered through the WashU's Department of Comparative Literature - essentially a hybrid of Literature and Art History. I also completed minors in both Photography and Writing, two of my greatest passions. In the fall of 2012 I began my MFA in Writing with a concentration in non-fiction at Columbia. My extensive coursework in English and Creative Writing has given me a great deal of experience in workshop-based classes, and has made me a careful and skilled editor. I believe one of my greatest strengths is not only my own ability to write fluidly, but also to help others do the same while still respecting their individual voices. I love to work with students on college essays, other applications, and general writing skills - this past year, one of my students with whom I worked on a college essay was accepted to every school to which he applied, and I work to achieve that goal with all of my students! I'm also experienced in Verbal and Writing test prep, particularly for the SAT, and find great satisfaction in watching my students' scores steadily improve. In short, if your tutoring needs have to do with words, I've got them covered!I also devoted a good portion of time in my undergraduate career to foreign language study and to developing an appreciation of global culture. I have studied Spanish, French, Russian, and German and have traveled on my own to over twenty nations. I spent half of my junior year abroad in Barcelona, Spain, honing the Spanish I had been accumulating since the fifth grade, picking up some Catalan, and studying design and art history in one of the world's foremost design capitals. I am experienced as a tutor in Spanish language, and have had much success bringing up my students' grades through personalized assessments and exercises built around their own weaknesses, in addition to those provided by the textbook and general homework help.In my free time I love to photograph, bake, knit, make music, and travel. I hope you'll consider me as a tutor!

As a current M.A candidate, I strongly believe in education empowerment and the gift of knowledge. I've been involved in the education in a myriad of ways: I've taught both in the States and abroad, tutored, trained teachers, taken academic courses, and worked with education policy.Half of learning is understanding the material, and the other half is understanding yourself and how you need to relate to the material. I think a well rounded, successful student needs to focus on both aspects in order to be prepared for a lifetime of learning, and I'd love to help each and every student in their pursuit of that "lightbulb" moment.

I am a graduate of University of California, San Diego. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a focus on International Relations, and a minor in Philosophy. Since graduation, I've been interning at a policy think-tank in Washington, D.C. I really enjoy tutoring a broad range of subjectsfrom math to test prep to writingbecause it keeps me intellectually active and on my toes. I really like to tutor by leading my partner through an analysis of his/her thought process in problem-solving; I've found it's a really effective way to break bad mental habits and create new, good ones.
