I am a graduate of the University of Chicago where I received my undergraduate degree in political science. Right after graduation, I worked as an academic and test prep tutor as well as admissions consultant in Hong Kong. For the past two years, I worked with a number of students to help prepare them for college in the United States.Even though I tutor a wide range of subjects, I enjoy teaching English and standardized test preparation the most. After several years working in the private sector after finishing my PhD in physics, I am eager to help students wrestle with and master concepts in their math and physics classes. Math is everywhere. Yet, it can be one of the most difficult subject for many students. My goal as a teacher is to first learn which subjects and hobbies that my student enjoys. And, then show how almost every topic within math is utilized by that student. Once I motivate that student to want to learn more about the subject matter, it is a matter of time before my student masters that topic and want to learn about another topic. It is a great confidence booster and a lesson for life. The student believes that if they can conquer the most difficult subject, then can master anything in life.

I am a graduate of the University of Chicago, and I will be starting a graduate program at Columbia in August. I am about to complete a year of service with City Year, an education non-profit that places young adults into under-served schools. As a City Year member, I worked full-time in the classroom with middle-school students who were in approximately the 10th percentile for math (meaning they score lower than 90% of students). One-fourth of those students were able to grow around 15 percentile points by the end of the year!

Academia has always been an important aspect of my life. I have always taken my studies pretty seriously, but I took a greater interest in them during high school. I attended a private school where I was given the opportunity to discover a large range of topics I had never thought about pursuing, such as engineering and biomedical sciences. In college, I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in Linguistics, while minoring in Arabic and gaining a certificate in Middle Eastern and North African studies.
