I am a math nerd that graduated in Georgia. I recently moved to the Houston area to come back home and be with my family. I have tutored for years now and I recently graduated in May 2011. I am fresh out of college so I am fully capable of communicating the problems in terms most people can understand. I have a strong passion for math and nothing feels better then watching someone learn it.My favorite subject of all time is Calculus. I have a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering with a mathematics minor. I also have a master's degree in mechanical engineering and have been a practicing engineer for the past 21 years. After college, I've taught math and science in a Jr. High school for three years and found it to be a very rewarding experience. In the graduate school, I taught and tutored as a teaching assistant for the undergraduate physics lab course. I've continued to enjoy the joy of teaching and sharing through private tutoring. Even working as an engineer, I welcomed opportunities to mentor junior engineers to help them grow and sharpen their skills as engineers. I love to see the joy in the students' faces when they finally understand the concepts that have been eluding them and find the confidence in themselves. I accomplish that by finding out the gaps in the students' mastery of the subject matter and exploring ways to help students understand them at their pace. I am a current student at Barnard College, Columbia University. I am on the pre-med track with a major in biology. I am also interested in economics and American history. I began tutoring as a middle school student and haven't stopped, continuing into my high school years, year abroad and college. Through the years I have gained experience in tutoring chemistry, pre-calculus, algebra and reading. I find that patience is the most important attribute of a tutor because I believe that in due time and with the right assistance everyone can learn.

My experience in teaching/tutoring comes from my time spent in Graduate School at Ohio State University when I was a Graduate Teaching Assistant. I had to conduct recitation and laboratory for multiple sections of students (between 20-30 at a time). It was one of the best parts of my week. I really enjoyed working with the students and trying to clarify any problems they had with the material. Yes, it would get to be quite frustrating at times because you have to repeat a law or concept 5 times in 5 different ways, or students just weren't paying attention. But to see a student finally achieve clarity and sense the relief of pressure in them made it well worth it. I enjoy making connections with my students. I feel it makes it much easier to convince them of the importance of a given topic. As a younger individual myself, I find it fairly easy to make a connection with any student, or to at least make them comfortable. My style is laid back, and many of my students have been appreciative of that.

In college, I studied both science and art. Teaching is similar to both science and art in that it exists at the intersection of theory and practice. I have tutored college biology, taught English in South Korea, and STEM in Manhattan and art in Cambridge. I enjoy the challenge of presenting information in a manner that will engender understanding and communicate a passion for the material beyond the textbook or the test. My goal as a teacher is to not only help my students succeed academically but to enrich their relationship with the world around them.
