I am a senior graduating from Yale University this spring with a major in Music. I graduated from high school at Sidwell Friends in 2015, where I was academically focused on math and physics. I also prepared for and took the ACT in my senior year. I'm ready to help students with any of these subjects, particularly ACT test prep, math, or writing, a favorite hobby of mine. I know what it's like to be eager about learning, but not have the natural ability to be a fast learner, and I'm ready to share the tips and tricks that I've gathered with other students who want to become better learners as well. In high school, I spent much of my time working with the arts through choruses, drama, and dance; I was also a member of multiple athletic teams and the co-head of the GLSBT+ Alliance. Needless to say, I needed to find a balance between work and play! In college, I continue to be involved with music as a member of Doox of Yale, a TTBB a cappella group, where I served as Music Director my sophomore year. I have served as a Communication and Consent Educator, working with various programs to promote a positive sexual climate on campus, and am currently a First-Year Counselor. Next year, I will join the faculty at Phillips Exeter Academy as a choral assistant.

My tutoring career started while I was still attending Western Illinois University in pursuit of my bachelor's degree in physics. I would tutor in the physics tutoring center in the main sciences building. Students would come in without appointments, and we would accept any and all students who needed help. I was there for two years, my junior and senior year before I left after receiving my degree. During my school years, I would also assist in the physics and chemistry demonstration shows that we put on every year. Students from the local middle school and high school would attend, and fellow students and I would perform a variety of educational demonstrations. As you might guess, the subjects I feel most confident in tutoring would be physics and math. However, I don't believe that to be the limit of my scope. I've always had an interest in the other sciences, things like biology and chemistry, and I've had ten years of piano lessons so basic music theory and education are within my range as well. When I'm not tutoring, I like to play video games online with my friends, a few songs on the piano, and even meet up to play the occasional table top game like Dungeons and Dragons. I study chess rigorously, and hope to one day be a chess tutor as well. Picking the right tutor is important, but can be a tad tricky. A tutor is best served as both an educational guide and a friend. Because of the one on one nature, it's important that the tutor is someone you can look up to and trust as well as feel connected with. To me, a tutor's job is not to make the student jump through more and more hoops in the interest of perfection. Rather, they are there to foster curiosity, a willingness to learn from mistakes, and improve a student's level of confidence in a subject matter. A true master is an eternal student.

Since graduation, I have traveled extensively, and tutored students of all ages at my alma mater and also my high school and middle school. I went back to college at age 45 and earned a bachelors degree in math education in 2009 from Western Governor's University. Since that time I have taught students at all levels from 8th grade to high school seniors. When preparing for an end of course test or some other standardized test, the key is to be able to read and interpret the questions and understand what is being asked. When I am not teaching or tutoring, I enjoy hiking, photography and marksmanship.

I first discovered how much tutoring can help a student when I started struggling in organic chemistry during my sophomore year of college. No matter what method I used, I could not bring my grade up in that class, so I started attending tutoring sessions. It wasn't until I received this direct help that I was able to bring my grade back up and do so well in the class! In the summer of 2015, I participated in behavioral research on chimpanzees, and am now assisting with the skeletal archives at the American Museum of Natural History. I have had experience teaching as a peer mentor for college students in Introductory Biology, as a camp counselor at the Central Park Zoo, and as a tap dance instructor.My academic strengths are science, social sciences, music, and SAT preparation. I loved my time in primary and secondary school and hope to instill my excitement for learning into my tutees. While sometimes tests (both standardized and otherwise) can be tricky and decrease students' faith in themselves, I am certain that, with a little confidence boost, any student can make great strides with their coursework. As a teacher, I offer patience, humor, and brevity. I have enjoyed the time I've spent getting students to become engaged, excited, and proud of their knowledge.
