I am a graduate of Texas A & M University-Commerce. In 2017, I did my internship in a 5th grade class and an ESL kindergarten class then I received my Masters in Education. I enjoy being a part of student's success. In 2018 I taught Bilingual kindergarten students. I enjoyed watching them grow in their learning but my permit expired so I substituted until I found a school with a school culture I was comfortable with. Then a High School principal offered me a job as a Debate and Digital Arts and Animation Teacher. For the most part it was so satisfying to watch students engaged using different online software programs which contributed to their success in other classes. In Debate I taught students persuasive writing because it helped them be more confident when they debated each other and in their English classes. Overall I love watching students be successful in their other classes from my teaching. I tutored students after school with the online software programs: coding, animating creating websites, presentation and eportfolios.

I consider myself to have two lives. For the 18 years of my adult life I worked at various positions at a major oil company assisting lawyers, geologists, and engineers. I decided to complete my bachelor's degree and become an educator. I have a bachelor's degree in Applied Arts and Science, master's degrees in School Administration and School Counseling from Lamar University. I have the following certifications: Special Education, ESL, Generalist (Grades 4-8), Principal, and School Counselor. I have training in assessing for dyslexia and providing skills training for the identified students. I have worked with struggling learners in both the special education and general education population. I have worked with other educators to develop appropriate educational plans for individual students. I believe that all students can learn but that each student needs to be reached in the way that is appropriate for him/her.

I graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a degree in Elementary Education and then while teaching, got my Master's Degree in Special Education from East Carolina University. This is my 7th year as an educator and I have taught grades ranging from Kindergarten to 3rd. In college, I worked as a Resident Advisor and volunteered with many organizations including HYPE which focused on providing after school tutoring to young students :). I can tutor any elementary subject but am most comfortable supporting younger students (grades K-3) with reading, history, math, and writing or students who are older but need support with this foundational content. I have a lot of experience and enjoy supporting students with learning disabilities or other special needs.

My passion in helping students stems from the fact that I was once one myself, and not a very good one. College was a door to a new opportunity of learning. As soon as I became a college freshman, I saw a different world opening before my eyes. Today, I work with many diverse students in different scenarios: Pre-K to college level; foreign students needing to learn English for careers as well as scholastically; and SAT and ACT preparation for students seeking to get into college. The one thing that's common in these various scenarios is my passion to help students that are apprehensive to learn because they don't know what to do, and teach them how to break down a situation and discover for themselves how to study, learn, and find out to derive the answer for themselves. My Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Syracuse University and my Master's certificate in TEFL/TESOL from Learning Tutoring were not easy to obtain, However, that goal was worth it as they prepare me each day to to teach, interesting, diverse students, and assist them in achieving their educational goals. My favorite subject to teach is English--phonics, verbal, reading, and literature. My teaching style is hands-on. I just don't stand or sit there and lecture. Lectures are boring. As my resume and other documents state, I have 30 years experience as a union actor in good standing. Much of this acting experience has been in improvisation and role playing. I bring a lot of role playing activities into my class, especially when I am teaching foreign adults who need to know English for their jobs/or if the relocated to the U.S. My lessons are based on the students themselves. They're tailored to student individual needs. We do a student scenario, say applying for a graduate degree scholarship. If they are employed in an English speaking environment, we might do something where they are interviewing for a promotion. My philosophy is all about the 'individual student's needs,' whether I am teaching a class of six students or one-on-one. Outside of the class, I am interested in kayaking, filmmaking, and writing scripts and plays.

I received my undergrad from Savannah State University and my master's from Grand Canyon University. If there is one thing I've learned from teaching is that students are more willing to try for the teachers they like. You have to be relatable and relevant to ALL of your students needs. I make it a goal to build a relationship with my students and their parents. Building a foundation with all stakeholders helps set the tone for a successful school year! I have been teaching elementary-age children for the past 22 years. During that time, I have taught students from kindergarten through 5th grade. I began my love for working with children when I started babysitting as a teenager. As I continued my educational career at Georgia Southern University, I received a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education with a Minor in Music. As a child, I always had a love for music. I sang in the church choir as well as played handbells. Starting in 4th grade, I started playing the flute and continued participating in band throughout high school and college. During the summers, I was a camp counselor in an overnight summer camp located in Lookout Mountain, Georgia. I loved it! I got a chance to work with children and enjoy nature at the same time. Double whammy! I love spending time outdoors walking around my neighborhood, going on hiking trails, going camping with my family, and swimming. I also enjoy making all kinds of arts and crafts and playing board games.After graduating college, I married the love of my life and we have 3 boys ages 19, 17, and 13. During that time, I worked in Title 1 Schools that had a lot of ESOL students. I enjoyed working with this population of students, so I got my ESOL Endorsement. Shortly after that, an ESOL teacher retired at my school, so I moved into her position and have been in that position for the past 5 years. After my first year, I wanted to learn more about language learners, so I went back to school and got my master's degree at Georgia State University in Elementary Education with a concentration in Dual Immersion.I am a lifelong learner. Even today, after working all day at school, I come home and watch webinars, take extra classes, and read books to enrich my craft. I strive to find the most engaging, meaningful, and effective activities to help my students learn. Some of the trainings I have participated in are Orton Gillingham, LETRS (Science of Reading), and Kapan (Cooperative Learning).I love to teach all content areas, but what I have found over the years is that using science helps engage students to get them excited about learning. Most children love science experiments and learning about the world around them. Making learning meaningful is important. If students are invested in their learning, they are more motivated and excited about learning. Once you plant that seed, students will run with it and be lifelong learners, problem solvers, and contributing members of society. It is more than just learning the standards; it's giving students the tools they need to be successful. Once they have confidence in themselves, there is no stopping them.

I am now completing my Master's in Biblical Counseling that focuses on standard, widely accepted counseling models that also incorporate Christian teachings. I worked for the last 22 years as the Director of School-Community Partnerships for the school district in Las Vegas. I also teach graduate students who are pursuing their Master's of Business Administration, as well as reading and writing to adult learners who wish to earn their high school diploma. I am a certified teacher licensed in the state of Nevada. It is my belief that education is the vehicle in which individuals receive vital skills, knowledge, and tools that are necessary to build a successful life. I believe that all students can learn with proper supports and that they should be encouraged to critically think and solve problems similar to those that exist in the real world. Learning in this manner will allow them to develop the versatility to solve problems in preparation for adulthood. As instructors, it is our responsibility to ensure that learning occurs in an open, collaborative, and supportive environment so that students can grow and foster positive relationships with others to build a solid, learning community. In my free time, I like to read, hike, go to the theater or movies, and travel with my family.

Since high school, I have had a passion for working with children in foster care, mentoring children and tutoring children to help them succeed.
