I was what is referred to as a nontraditional student. I struggled in high school due to undiagnosed ADD. Upon receiving a diagnosis later at age 25 I returned to school. I received a BSCh and MS in Analytical Chemistry from The University of Memphis, a PhD in Analytical Chemistry from Vanderbilt University, and served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Indiana University before moving to the Denver area in 2011.I currently homeschool my 13 year-old son, and have tutored throughout my graduate academic career. I have taught undergraduate chemistry labs at levels from introductory courses for non-science backgrounds through advanced mixed graduate/undergraduate classes for chemistry majors. I understand that different people learn in different ways, and that the best teachers adapt their methods to the needs of their students. In addition to my passion for science, I have a love for music. Both of my children belong to the Denver Young Artist Orchestra and have performed musical theater with the Phamaly theater group.

I have been a professional tutor for the past two years, and have enjoyed many success stories with students (a number of whom have gone on to attend Ivy League schools).I love demystifying the standardized testing experience, and was was a proficient test-taker myself (earning a 2250/1500 on the SATs, and perfect scores on all AP exams taken), and am very sensitive to student anxiety, as I suffered from it myself. I've developed some effective rituals and coping mechanisms to help manage stress surrounding testing, and general tribulations of life in high school, college, and the workplace.I also have experience classroom teaching (in world languages, specifically Latin and Spanish), which has given me the skills necessary to communicate with students effectively, and adapt instruction to students' individual needs. I am a New Hampshire resident, able to commute to Massachusetts as needed, and am widely available for online clients during the Academic Year. I then earned my PhD at Vanderbilt University in Microbiology. Now I work as a research professor at Harvard University's Rowland Institute. I have a passion for science and really enjoy helping others understand it. I tutor in biology, chemistry, math, and art. The last one is because I am a visual learner and have had a lifetime of learning to illustrate complex ideas into something understandable. I can touter for GRE and GRE Biology subject tests. I like to use inquiry based learning strategies to help students discover the answers they are looking for; just like scientists do everyday. In addition to being passionate about science and science education I really enjoy traveling, cooking (and eating), reading books, singing, hanging outwit my family, and-of course-drawing.

Hi, I'm Gregory Bernstein. I'm a senior at Vanderbilt University and I'm majoring in Political Science. More than anything else, what makes me a great tutor is experience. I've been tutoring students for four years and look forward to tutoring new students with Varsity Tutors.Primarily, I work with students on SAT test prep and have seen students increase their SAT composite score by more than 350 points after working with me. I've also tutored students who were initially struggling in a variety of AP subjects and went on to earn 4s and 5s on their AP tests.Additionally, I teach debate and public speaking to 30-40 students each year (as part of a speech and debate institute that I own and teach at) and have spent countless hours understanding what strategies and techniques are required to be an effective teacher. I believe that after tutoring, coaching, and teaching for 4 years, I've learned a great deal not only about what I teach, but about how to teach. I'm very interested in pedagogy and am always asking myself "is this the most effective way to teach this subject or this concept," "what is the pedagogical merit in this approach," and "am I making sure that the student I'm tutoring isn't just hearing what I'm saying, but is understanding it as well?" I've had a significant amount of time to test out various teaching methods and learn what works for different types of students. I strongly believe that individualized tutoring strategies are needed for each students because there are many different types of learners.

My personal mission is to get students at the level they want to be in whatever subject they are struggling with so that their future opportunities are open and limitless. I used to struggle with learning materials on my own. What I found out was that having someone else to talk over materials made me feel not only more confident, but I also had a lot more fun learning. I wish to impart the same type of feelings towards my clients. Tutoring does not have to be a last resort when you are backed up against a wall. Tutoring is a great way to supplement your learning and get ahead.

I am an undergraduate student at Vanderbilt University. I am working to earn a Bachelor of Science in mathematics with a minor in Art History. Ever since High School, I have had a passion for tutoring. I taught at a voluntary after school ACT program and tutored independently students across my county ranging from age five to sixteen. Growing up in a low socioeconomic area plagued with low standardized test scores I understood the power I possessed to give back to my community to those around me. Ever since I have been in love with tutoring and working with students to help better themselves and their intellectual growth. I have experience tutoring in most subjects but my main adoration has always been mathematics. I have encountered so many people who have a bitter taste in their mouth towards math due to their prior experiences. Whenever I am able to change their view towards math I am always ecstatic. I have witnessed the power education has to change someone's life and I want to pass on my knowledge to my students so they may pass it onto others one day themselves.

I am eager to help students thrive because I'm still very much a student myself, and will be for the foreseeable future. Though I enjoyed my time as an undergraduate student in Literature, and learned quite a bit during my time at Vanderbilt, there's still more work to be done. I am working towards a Master's degree, and will continue on from there.Though I am more than happy to help where needed anywhere from K-12, I am most experienced with test prep tutoring. The SAT and ACT tests can be an extremely stressful event for students, especially first time test-takers, so I do my best to go beyond the material covered by the tests and prepare students for the experience of taking the test itself, so that when the day comes, they are confident and prepared to tackle whatever challenges rise up before them. The way that I teach generally falls in line with the way that I learn best myself: discussion and collaborative explanation. When approaching difficult material, lecturing at a student leaves much to be desired. I aim to help them arrive at conclusions and realizations on their own by building on material with which they are already comfortable and confident, and working together towards a solution rather than giving the answer and expecting it to simply be memorized.Outside of academic pursuits, I enjoy many creatively-focused hobbies, primarily writing, acting, and even juggling! I am thankful for the opportunity in my time at Vanderbilt to combine all three into an annual show that not only brought smiles to the faces of a campus, but had the chance to reach out into the Nashville community and make a difference.

I grew up in Los Angeles and moved to Nashville to attend Vanderbilt University, where I am currently a sophomore pursuing a bachelor of arts degree in Medicine, Health, and Society. Being a student, Ive understood the frustration of not knowing what to do or who to turn to in the moment I dont understand something. This feeling can be very disheartening, but having the right person to guide you can make all the difference. For struggling students, I want to be that person to help them reach their full potential. In high school, I tutored people (mostly high school students like myself at the time) within the community, and it was personally rewarding every time I saw a student gain confidence in their studies.I believe that learning should be enjoyable, comfortable, and productive for everyone. Because every person learns differently, it is important to decide what learning style suits each student best and to establish an environment where the student is comfortable to actively engage and ask for any help they need. Therefore, my teaching style is rather flexible, accommodating, and goal-oriented.I tutor many subjects ranging from English, math, Spanish, social sciences/humanities and test prep. I enjoy tutoring subjects within social sciences because I find them the most interesting to discuss, as well as test prep because it is very straightforward to teach. Outside of school and work, Im interested in art, music, fashion, photography and volunteering.

When a connection is made, we can bridge the gaps and make learning fun and lasting. Everyone can be a math person, everyone can love grammar, everyone can write a stellar paper. These were also the years where my love of learning really took shape, and getting the opportunity to foster this same love and appreciation for learning in other students excites me.I am most passionate about Art History, US History, and Statistics, but also love tutoring in middle school Math and Pre-Algebra, as well as French, writing, and grammar. As someone who sometimes has a hard time speaking up in class to ask my teachers questions when I have them, I have always placed great emphasis on making sure my tutoring space is a safe place where students are not afraid of asking these questions and making mistakes! The most valuable lesson I have learned over the course of my academic career thus far is that there is just as much, if not more, that can be learned from mistakes compared to when you get the answer right the first time.Outside of academics, I love to run, hike, do yoga, read, listen to podcasts, and discover new music on Spotify.
