I am a student at Arizona State University in the biomedical engineering department. I will be earning my Bachelor's degree in May of 2015 and beginning my master's degree in biomedical engineering in August 2015. The research that I have been working on is studying more direct routes of drug delivery within the body as well as developing code for counting cells. I am an avid learner and love to share my knowledge with those around me. My favorite courses to tutor are predominantly quantitative. I like to treat these courses like an intricate puzzle that I have to solve using the skills in my "skill tool belt". For almost three years in college I tutored hundreds of students in any subject that had anything to do with Mechanical Engineering. Having learned English as a second language, I understand the challenges of learning a new language, especially one so different from your first language. As a classically trained singer, I have lots of experience learning to pronounce new languages and have many tools for teaching correct Mandarin pronunciation, one of the most challenging aspects of the language. I graduated from the high school of BASIS Chandler and I currently major in Computer Science at Arizona State University. While I did do some volunteer tutoring for Algebra I and II in high school, my more formal work experiences include teaching Math and English at Kumon to mostly primary and middle school kids and working as a Undergraduate TA at ASU to assist college freshmen with EEE 120 (Digital Circuit Design). While I can teach a broad range of subjects, my favorite ones to teach are programming and mathematics. Upon entering college, I tested into a basic math but was eventually able to obtain a graduate degree in a math intensive subject. The road from basic algebra to advanced mathematics was arduous but it was all made possible over a decade ago with the help of a tutor. It was through tutoring that I discovered my greatest barrier to learning mathematics: a lack of belief in myself. The myth that I did not possess a deep inborn talent required to perform math or science kept me from reaching my potential. Once I let that go, I discovered that even a belated and neglected learner, like I once was, could succeed in math. Math is a craft learned through doggedness and attention. Belief in ones own abilities can only be recognized through exposure and experience. This is what a tutor provides.I developed a large repertoire of math skills and memory tricks while being tutored and eventually decided to pass them along as a tutor myself. I continued to use practical equations, colorful anecdotes, and methods of engaging exploration to assist students as a peer tutor until I completed my masters degree in 2006. Encouraging students to explore language creatively not only allowed me to connect with them on a deeper level, but it also empowered them to express their own stories and ideas in a way that was meaningful to them. My teaching philosophy centers on encouragement. I believe that true learning happens through trial and error, so I push my students to try, fail, and try again. Mistakes are a natural part of the learning process, and creating a supportive environment where students feel free to take risks is essential to their growth. Outside of tutoring, my interests range from video games and movies to reading and writing novels and exploring philosophy. These passions inspire my approach to teaching, as I strive to bring creativity and critical thinking into every session.

My background is in forensic anthropology, world and U.S. history, human evolution, cultural anthropology, archaeology, linguistics, and religious studies. My teaching philosophy is pretty simple: communicate your passion for the subject and make it relatable to the student's own interests and passions.
