Hello everyone! I became a VarsityTutor because I feel that teaching is an incredibly enriching experience - I think that seeing the progress of a student over time is so rewarding for me. I have a BS in Neuroscience, a BA in Religious, and an MS in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Pittsburgh, so I have a lot of diverse experience - STEM and humanities - from my educational background. Currently, I'm a medical student!I worked in a math tutoring center in high school and college, and I have teaching experience in math from basics all the way through calculus. I have previously tutored math and reading for the SAT. I have taken calculus at the college level, and for several semesters in college, I served as a TA for general chemistry classes.

I am a student at the Barrett Honors College, a part of Arizona State University. I expect to earn my Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics with a focus on physics in December 2022. While my degree has had a heavy focus on physical sciences, I have also completed a variety of coursework in social and life sciences to prepare for my post-graduation plans. After graduation, I hope to earn either a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or a Master of Science in Entry to Nursing Practice and begin work as a pediatric nurse. I decided to change my path from mathematics and physics to nursing because I perform best and feel happiest when I am working with others, which is why I am so excited to have the opportunity to be a tutor. I first realized my passion for people-centered work in high school when I volunteered with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to help educate financial donors and newly diagnosed families on the science of type 1 diabetes. My passion grew throughout my time in college, during which I joined a division of a Rotary club, which matches people of all ages with service projects within their local community, became a teaching assistant for a Socratic-seminar discussion and writing course for freshmen in Barrett Honors College, and worked as a student researcher in a physics lab, where I had to collaborate with my colleagues to address research problems and clearly present my specific field of work to others who were less well versed in the topic. My tutoring style is based on my own educational experience. I draw on tips and tricks that teachers and professors of mine have used which really helped difficult concepts to "click" for me. Most of these techniques associate silly stories or acronyms with concepts, as psychological studies have shown that people are more likely to remember a concept if it is tied to something unusual and memorable. That being said, I believe that every student has their own unique learning style, and so I am always happy to adjust my tutoring style to the needs of a student. Otherwise, I hold tutoring sessions by reviewing a concept and tying it into helpful learning devices, working through practice problems with a student while answering any questions they may have, and then summarizing what was done, answering final questions, and constructing a goals list at the end of a session. I mix homework and test-style problems with fun games like Jeopardy and Kahoot to keep students engaged while preparing them for what they will see in class.I look forward to working with you and helping you to succeed and achieve your full potential as the intelligent and capable learner that you are!

I am a graduate from Northwestern University with a major in Film and a minor in English. While I was at school, I had the best experience of my entire academic career doing independent research, writing a paper on the subject, and then teaching fellow students the material. In that one project, I saw just how much harder I was willing to work (and how much better the results were) when I truly cared. A personal connection and goal is the key to succeeding in any subject. In addition, once I stepped to the other side of the desk, I saw how rewarding being a teacher can be.As a tutor, I see myself your guru - your guide to finding why you can succeed in a given subject. I prefer English because I know that everyone has something to say. Even if you didn't like reading the book, I'm sure you can get on A on the essay. My sessions are informal and fun. I like finding outside materials that can help get the idea flowing. My goal is to increase interest and productivity each time out. If you can improve your mindset, the grades will always follow. I have a unique philosophy on learning, which I feel translates to concrete results. I feel that I can provide effective feedback on writers of any aptitude. Finally, I know that I'm only half of the tutoring equation, so I will do my best to make myself easy to work with. My schedule is very flexible. Clear communication is of the utmost importance to me, so don't hesitate to get in touch. I strive to be prompt, and I will stay late if needed. I look forward to scheduling a session!

I am a 19 year old who appreciates school and knowledge more than anything. I have always been drawn to learning more and as a result I have felt the responsibility to pass knowledge on to those who are struggling with a concept I have mastered. I excel in math and science and hope to help kids who are interested in these topics overcome the obstacles that come with the education process, in order to continue learning more. I have had many inspirational academic mentors in my life that have allowed me to become the man I am today and as a result I am glad to be in the position to pay it forward.

Earth Science Tutor • +3 Subjects
I have been a teacher in a Title I school for the past 15 years. I taught regents earth science for 10 years, as well as middle school general science for the past 15 years. Additionally, during the summer I taught a two week regents review earth science course. My experience with the earth science regents is extensive as well as my middle school experience. It is a passion of mine to work with students in the earth science curriculum, the middle school science curriculum and help students navigate the online platform. Online learning is much different for students requiring teachers to provide additional resources and more one on one opportunities for students to understand the science content. As an educator, I feel that is important to continue to educate ourselves on a constant basis and not graduate from college and feel we have learned all that is possible. Continuing to attend school and allowing my students that knowledge shows them that life does not end with a 'graduation' but is a continual learning process. You will find my commitment to you, and your educational needs are a priority in my teaching. As a tutor you will find I am dependable, attend sessions on time and if necessary am able to provide additional materials to support student learning.Thank you for considering me and I look forward to working with your child.

Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students across Columbia's 7 school districts with personalized tutoring support. Whether your student attends a school in Richland One, Richland Two, Lexington, or another local district, we can match them with a tutor who understands South Carolina's curriculum standards and can support their specific academic goals.
Your first session is all about getting to know your student's strengths, challenges, and learning style. The tutor will assess where your student stands academically, discuss specific goals (like improving a grade or preparing for a test), and create a personalized plan. This foundation helps ensure every future session is targeted and effective.
Tutors working with Columbia students are familiar with South Carolina's standards and curriculum expectations across grade levels. They tailor instruction to address gaps in foundational skills while pushing students toward mastery of grade-level content. This targeted approach helps students not just keep up, but build confidence and genuine understanding.
Math and reading comprehension are the most requested subjects for students in Columbia, particularly in elementary and middle school where foundational skills are critical. High school students frequently seek support in algebra, geometry, chemistry, and test prep for the SAT and ACT. We also work with students on writing, science, and other subjects based on individual needs.
With an average student-teacher ratio of 12.9:1 across Columbia's schools, classroom teachers often have limited time for individualized attention. Personalized 1-on-1 tutoring fills that gap by giving your student dedicated time to work through challenges, ask questions without hesitation, and learn at their own pace—something that's difficult to achieve in a traditional classroom setting.
Tutoring costs vary based on the subject, tutor expertise, and frequency of sessions you choose. We work with families to find pricing that fits their budget, whether that's weekly sessions or intensive support during key academic periods. Contact us for a personalized quote based on your student's specific needs.
Absolutely. Tutors work with Columbia students preparing for the SAT, ACT, AP exams, and state assessments.
