I am eager to help learners of any age and educational background thrive through providing careful listening, guidance, and feedback. I enjoy teaching a variety of subjects ranging from statistics to psychology to the Japanese language. I was born in New York, NY, and grew up in northern New Jersey attending the local public school system and the Japanese Weekend School of New Jersey. After completing two high school diplomas, I pursued a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Psychology at New York University and worked in New York, NY for six years in private industry. I returned to higher education, moving to Boston where I conducted research, taught, and studied Clinical Psychology. After completing a Master of Liberal Arts in Clinical Psychology at Harvard University, I moved to Salt Lake City, UT to pursue a PhD in Psychology (Clinical Neuropsychology). I am proficient in SPSS, Stata, APA formatting, and research methods for the behavioral sciences. I have limited exposure and experience with R and MATLAB.

I am currently a doctoral candidate in clinical psychology, but I have been tutoring ever since I was in elementary school. Because not everyone learns the same way, I feel that it is easy for students to miss certain tidbits or whole subjects in the classroom, and it can quickly feel like it is too late to catch up. My goal is to work together to pick up the pieces that were lost or are close, but not quite there: learning the way you want to learn and the way you learn best rather than having topics taught at you.
I am starting a part-time lecturer position at Paul Quinn College in the fall for General Biology I lab and lecture. I love to learn and teach.
I'm currently working toward graduating from the University of Utah with a degree in Sociology. I tutor mainly math and writing, but am able to tutor in a variety of subjects. I strive to make my tutoring sessions productive and enjoyable by getting students involved and excited about learning.
I'm Garrett and I live in Salt Lake City and I want to help you understand topics in natural science and mathematics. I have a bachelor's degree in geological science (geophysics) from University of Colorado Boulder with a minor in mathematics. Part of my success in college came from the preparation I had from taking AP Calculus and Physics courses in high school. I'm a huge fan of visual aids and examining real-life examples and applications when teaching. I worked as a learning assistant in an astronomy lab course and as a tutor for student athletes in geology while attending CU. I've been honing the ability to craft perfect analogies to help you make sense of mathematical or physical concepts.
As a passionate Microbiology Major at Brigham Young University, I am excited to leverage my strong foundation in the sciences to tutor students preparing for the MCAT. With over two years of teaching experience, including volunteer English classes in Brazil, I have developed effective communication skills and a student-centered approach. My core subjects include chemistry, biology, and physics, where I excelled on the MCAT, particularly in the sciences. I employ a structured "I do, we do, you do" methodology to build student confidence, allowing them to grasp complex concepts through observation and practice. My extensive research background in microbiology and applied behavioral health experience enables me to provide real-world examples that make challenging topics more relatable. I am dedicated to fostering an encouraging learning environment where students can overcome misconceptions and focus on key ideas essential for their success.
I am also figuring out the reason the student doesn't understand the material in the first place. I also have always enjoyed the perspective I get from teaching. It gives me a better overall understanding of the subject, so I am even more prepared for future lessons and future jobs.
I'm not tutoring or buried in my textbooks, you will either find me rock climbing at the Triangle Rock Club, playing Ultimate Frisbee, working on my car, or enjoying the great outdoors (beaches, mountains, forests--you name it, I love it). On rainy weekends I enjoy tinkering with computers and old electronics, playing Pokemon, or picking at my guitar.
I am an interdisciplinary educator with an Ed.M. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a B.A. from Dartmouth College. My background is primarily in integrated arts learning and museum education and I specialize in visual arts, history and art history, and object-based learning. In all subjects, I take a creative, inquiry-based and learner-centered approach, designing opportunities for each unique individual to meet their learning goals.
I am a recent graduate from a masters program in biostatistics at Columbia University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in biological sciences, with a focus in neurobiology at Northwestern University. In August, I will be starting a doctoral program in biostatistics at NYU. I was a teaching assistant at Columbia University in my department and also have tutored graduate students and undergraduates privately as well. My primary areas of tutoring are math and statistics coursework in addition to math sections on standardized tests such as the GRE and GMAT. I am very passionate about helping students feel more confident and excited about math. In my spare time, I enjoy running, playing piano, and spending time with friends and family.
I am a graduate of Wesleyan University, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with High Honors. With eight years of experience working in education, I've tutored students in math, science, history, and English, as well as helped students prepare for standardized tests. I've guided adults towards passing the US Citizenship Exam and taught English in India, where I lived for six months. Whenever I work with a student I personalize the lessons to fit their particular learning style, since I know every student is unique and having the right fit can make all the difference in making learning fun and effective. My strengths are tutoring the social sciences and humanities, as well as making math and standardized tests approachable to students that normally don't like those subjects. In my spare time I like traveling, spending time in the outdoors (climbing & backpacking), meditation, and playing soccer. Next fall I will be beginning my PhD in Education at Harvard University.
I am a junior Mechanical Engineering major at Yale, and I hope to become a Naval Aviator after college. I am also a varsity sailor, and enjoy playing music with friends when I can get some free time. I have been tutoring my fellow students throughout my entire academic career, and I would best describe my tutoring style as one that adapts to each students' needs. For example, I have always tried to frame questions in a different way so that the student can better understand the question. Some students need visual representations of numbers and systems to understand them, and others benefit more by understanding the concepts behind each formula. I prefer to tutor in math and physics, and especially with real world application problems. I hope to help students improve their standardized test scores and their understanding of the math and sciences so that they can achieve their academic goals!

During the first session, the tutor will assess your student's current understanding, learning style, and specific academic goals. They'll ask about challenges your student is facing in their Salt Lake City school, review relevant coursework, and develop a personalized tutoring plan. This foundation ensures that all future sessions are targeted and effective for your student's unique needs.
Absolutely. Tutoring works best as a complement to classroom instruction, not a replacement. Tutors can reinforce concepts taught by classroom teachers, help with homework, prepare for upcoming tests, or dive deeper into topics your student finds challenging. This collaborative approach means tutoring directly supports your student's success within their Salt Lake City school environment.
Tutoring rates vary based on the subject, tutor expertise, and your student's specific needs. Varsity Tutors works with families to find tutoring solutions that fit different budgets. We recommend starting with a consultation to discuss your student's goals and get a personalized rate estimate based on what would work best for your situation.
We take time to understand your student's academic goals, learning style, and specific challenges before making a match. We consider factors like subject expertise, teaching approach, and availability to connect your student with a tutor who's the right fit. If the match isn't working after the first session, we can connect you with a different tutor at no additional cost.
