ACT Math Tutor • +23 Subjects

I am a graduate of Luther College, a liberal arts school in Decorah, IA. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Religion, with a minor in Social Welfare. Throughout college, I tutored many students in high school and college level math. I loved the process of helping people through math problems, so after graduating I served in the MN Math Corps as a Math Enrichment Tutor, where I learned research based teaching methods to tutor middle school students who were below proficiency in math. Currently, I am certified to tutor a broad range of math subjects ranging from elementary math to pre-calculus, as well as ACT Math and GRE Math/Verbal test prep. Through my experience, I've found that the best method of tutoring is to tailor it to each student's learning style (every concept can be taught/understood in multiple ways), and make sure the student actually understands what he/she is doing versus just learning equations and methods to complete assignments. I am very passionate about tutoring math as I love empowering people, and I believe mathematics is a vital subject to learn and understand. In addition to tutoring, I have worked as a data analyst for a market research firm near Chicago. In my free time, I enjoy keeping up on current events, reading (I love Harry Potter and Hunger Games!), Ultimate Frisbee, playing guitar and piano, and learning economics.

My other areas of expertise include physiology, microbiology, and immunology. As a tutor, I want to encourage enthusiasm and share the reward of academic accomplishment. My ultimate goal is to become a board certified naturopathic oncologist. Aside from studying I enjoying hiking, skiing, painting, reading, and cooking. Nothing is more gratifying for me than helping others achieve knowledge and happiness. That???s why I???m here at Varsity Tutors, so I can help others reach academic excellence, and beyond. Before I became a tutor, I was a Lead Teaching Assistant for human anatomy and physiology at my university for two years, became a Division I track and field All-American honorable mention and Academic All-American, did synthetic organic chemistry research, and graduated summa cum laude. Now that I???ve graduated, I???m applying and interviewing for medical school, volunteering in the rural, underserved community as an EMT on an ambulance, and helping young children with special needs in an impoverished city.A lot of people ask me why I chose medicine. One reason why I???m pursuing medicine is because I???m passionate about teaching others, and that???s why I???m here, because I truly enjoy it. I enjoy helping others in MCAT prep, biochemistry, and much more. I hope to not just be a tutor, but a helpful guide and mentor in your academic endeavors.

I am a graduate of The University of Portland, where I received my Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation, I worked for Nike as a Test and Validation Engineer on their Digital Sport products (FuelBand, SportWatch, Nike+, etc.) for one year before returning to graduate school. I am currently pursuing a Master's degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford University, with a focus in design and manufacturing, and will graduate in the summer of 2015.Though I have never strictly worked as a tutor, I tutored undergraduates as part of the Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society while at the University of Portland, and this past year was a TA for a statics & solid mechanics class at Stanford, which included holding office hours for students to help with homework and test prep. I have the most experience tutoring lower division engineering classes such as this (physics, statics, strength of materials, mechanics) but also enjoy and am comfortable with a wide array of math subjects from algebra to calculus. I am a very interactive and hands on tutor, and believe a free-flowing dialogue between student and teacher is essential for maximum learning efficiency. I would much rather work through problems with my students to find areas in need of improvement rather than sit back and watch them struggle.Outside of academia, I try to enjoy the outdoors as much as possible, including hiking, biking, swimming, camping and skiing in the winter. I enjoy music a lot (both listening and creating) and reading as well, and find current events to be fascinating - though I try not to let them weigh me down, as some of the world's issues can be tough to stomach.

I primarily tutor a lot of math classes. Anything from elementary school through undergrad. High school Geometry? Yep! Real Analysis? Absolutely! Python? Not quite math, you tricky person, but sign right up. I tutor a bit of physics and computer programming as well. Test prep, too.But who am I? I am a math music philosophy nerd. I love Gauss almost as much as I love Bach and I love Bach almost as much as I like Hegel. So chat to me about that stuff if you are so inclined. But you want to just chill and have homework help? That's quite all right, too!
