I'm now living in New York City pursuing a career in casting and producing theater. Although I have found my passion in the arts, I find great fulfillment tutoring math and science, because I think it's important for students to know they can succeed in these challenging subjects. I seek to develop an individual learning plan for each student, discovering the tools that will best help them succeed. My previous private tutoring clients have gone on to graduate at the top of their class. In addition, I am also an experienced SAT and ACT prep tutor.

I am a recent graduate of the University of Chicago, where I received Bachelor of Arts degrees in English Literature and Linguistics. I have been able to pursue my passion for languages and literature in my career as well as my studies. I have taught English as a second language, critical reading, grammar, and academic and professional writing to students of diverse backgrounds and proficiency levels, including incoming university students, business professionals in South Korea, and fifth and sixth graders in south side Chicago. I am especially excited when I get to help students work on their writing skills, and the breakthroughs my students have had in learning to express their own unique voices and perspectives clearly and articulately are some of our favorite teaching moments.
I am currently working on my doctorate in Environment and Resources at Wisconsin-Madison, studying tiger ecology and conservation with sub-field foci on predator ecology, and modeling population dynamics.
I am a current sophomore at Brown University, where I study Applied Math and Urban Studies. I have tutored in a high school ESL classroom, as a private tutor, in a local community center, and on online platforms. I love tutoring all subjects, and I'm especially passionate about teaching math. As a tutor, I work to meet each student where they're at by helping them find connections between existing knowledge and new subjects. I believe every student can find passion, motivation, and empowerment in education, and I love helping students develop the knowledge and skills to get there.
I am a lifelong learner. I have a BA in Religion (Buddhism) from Carleton College and a MA in Languages and Cultures of Asia from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I have traveled to France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Japan, and China. I've lived in a suburb of Paris, a small farming island of Japan, and also in Lhasa in the Tibetan region for one summer. I taught communications/writing and comparative religion at UW-Madison. Recently, I taught pre-K at a Reggio Emilia inspired school, where learning is child directed. Currently, I wake up very early to teach English as a foreign language to students in China. I love to see the strengths and potential in all people. I believe educators have the responsibility to support equity in education and I consider myself an ally to BIPOC, AAPI, Latinx, LGBTQIA+, neurodivergent, and other groups. I enjoy reading, writing, photography, gardening (especially with native plants), hiking, gaming, and spending time with my family. I look forward to meeting you!
I'm Richard and I love teaching. There are few things more rewarding than being able to create enthusiasm for a subject area. My favorites are math, physics and music. I grew up Spanish bilingual and can teach in both languages having TA'd college level Spanish courses. I also lived in Germany for a year and can help students with that. I have a B.S. in Math, B.S. in Physics and a masters degree in Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space sciences. I also work as a professional musician and am a very organized and dedicated freelancer.
I am studying Economics and Business with a Spanish minor at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. My favorite subjects to tutor are Math and Spanish for elementary and middle school students. I look forward to working with you!
I am a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Political Science and a minor in Economic Policy. After graduating, I began tutoring a wide range of clients in reading, math, and other cognitive skills with a company called LearningRx in Green Bay, WI. I also have taught guitar and bass guitar for the past year. I have experience teaching both children and adults, and I enjoy working with any student who is in need of educational enrichment. My teaching philosophy is that I am a coach, mentor, and resource to my students. My responsibility is to help them build independent confidence and mastery over their academic pursuits. In addition to being a tutor, I am a working musician. I also enjoy spending time with my family and reading.
I'm currently a PhD student in microbiology! I love teaching and making concepts "click." I've worked in biology labs for many years so have great experience to make concepts applicable to the real world. Science should be fun and rewarding, and I do my best to make it so!
I am a current Master's degree student at Illinois State University, where I study Communication. I currently work both as a private tutor for high school/AP English, ACT prep, SAT prep, and as a graduate teaching assistant at my university. I have several years of tutoring and teaching experience working with clients from a variety of backgrounds and with a variety of goals and challenges, and I have used that experience to develop the strongest pedagogy possible, in order to accommodate the needs of all my clients. I look forward to meeting and working with your student!
I am interested in making physics and math relatable to people who are not naturally adept at it. I have taken the SAT, the general GRE and the physics GRE subject tests.
I am a passionate tutor of several subjects, with an emphasis on high school math. I attended Johns Hopkins University and spent a semester abroad in Seville, Spain. Since graduating in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics, I have worked in software development, education, and the performing arts -- I like a bit of variety to keep life interesting! I am currently pursuing a Master's degree in Educational Policy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. My personal interests include dance, cooking, and podcasts.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Madison's 6 school districts serve over 25,000 students across 87 schools, and Varsity Tutors connects students from all of them with personalized 1-on-1 instruction. Whether your student attends a school in Madison Metropolitan, Verona Area, Middleton-Cross Plains, Sun Prairie, Waunakee, or Oregon, tutors can support them with curriculum-aligned help and test preparation.
Tutors work with Wisconsin's academic standards and help students build mastery in core subjects like math, reading, science, and social studies. With personalized instruction tailored to your student's learning pace, they can strengthen foundational skills, close knowledge gaps, and develop confidence in areas where they're struggling—all aligned with what Madison schools expect.
Madison students most commonly seek help with math (especially algebra and geometry), reading comprehension, writing, and standardized test preparation like the ACT. Science and foreign language support are also popular, particularly as students advance through middle and high school. Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors who specialize in whatever subject they need.
The first session is focused on understanding your student's goals, current challenges, and learning style. The tutor will assess where your student stands academically, identify specific areas for improvement, and create a personalized plan. This foundation helps ensure that every session after that is targeted and effective for your student's needs.
While Madison's student-teacher ratio is solid, classroom instruction still needs to move at a pace that works for the whole group. Personalized 1-on-1 tutoring fills that gap by giving your student undivided attention, allowing tutors to slow down on difficult concepts, adjust explanations to match how your student learns best, and move faster through material they've already mastered.
ACT preparation requires targeted practice, strategy coaching, and personalized feedback—all things that tutors excel at. Tutors help Madison students understand the test format, identify their weak areas (whether it's math reasoning, reading comprehension, or science), and develop a study plan that fits their timeline. Many students see meaningful score improvements with consistent, focused preparation.
The timeline depends on the size of the gap and how frequently your student meets with a tutor. Many students see noticeable improvement within 4-6 weeks of consistent sessions, though deeper skill-building takes longer. The key is regular practice combined with personalized instruction—tutors help identify exactly what's missing and create a focused plan to address it.
Start by telling us about your student's needs—the subject, grade level, and specific challenges they're facing. Varsity Tutors will match them with a tutor who has expertise in that area and understands how to work with students in Madison schools. You'll have flexibility to schedule sessions that fit your family's calendar and your student's learning goals.
