AP English Language and Composition Tutor • +26 Subjects
I graduated from Harvard University and have always had a love of stories, leading to a major in Folklore and Mythology, a cross curricular degree that combined classes from the Social Anthropology, Fokloristics and English departments. As a certified teacher, I have had extensive experience tutoring students in a variety of contexts, from my work with a community-based organization in South Africa, to prepping middle school students for high stakes testing in the rural south, to coaching high school seniors prepare college statements. I am particularly passionate about language arts and I hope to help learners realize the beauty, complexity and joy of reading and writing well. I believe that education is transformative and necessary--and that one's education is a lifelong journey. In my free time, I enjoy reading, traveling, yoga and exploring Portland's many offerings.

As a tutor, I have found that every student has a unique style of learning, so careful listening is one of the most important steps towards effective teaching. In fact, I believe it is the responsibility of a good tutor to adapt every lesson to the individual needs and interests of her students. I am fortunate to have studied extensively within my chosen academic fields, but as a tutor, I have found that my most valuable skills are my ability to keep an open mind, to listen patiently, and to communicate clearly. It is my goal to empower students by teaching to their own personal strengths, thus fostering a love of learning that will carry them beyond our tutoring sessions and into the rest of their academic career.A little bit about me: I graduated cum laude from Colby College in May 2015 with an honors degree in History. My coursework within my major was concentrated in both Middle Eastern and U.S. History. In my senior year at Colby, I wrote my thesis on imperialism in the Middle East during the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly focusing the First World War and its aftermath in the region. I received several competitive grants to conduct primary research in London and Oxford archives for this project, including the prestigious Goldfarb Center's student research fellowship. Once completed, my thesis was granted the award for the best senior essay in History that year. Additionally, I won Colby's annual prize for the best History student both my junior and senior year. I owe much of my academic success to my incomparable professors/mentors/advisors within the History Department, and now, as a tutor, I strive to provide the same level of enthusiastic support and encouragement to my own students.Beyond my history studies, I spent a semester during college at the University of Burgundy in Dijon, allowing me to develop my deep understanding of both French language and culture. While on Colby's campus, I spent much of my spare time working as an assistant to one of my professors on his manuscript, as both an editor and a researcher. During my spare time, I sang in the chamber choir, cooked, wrote poetry, and read (too many favorite books to count, but right up there are Brideshead Revisited, Persuasion, and Love in the Time of Cholera). Since moving to New York, I've added yoga to my hobbies roster. Now, I work with several of the best-rated tutoring agencies in New York City - and I would be thrilled to work with you to unlock your full academic potential, and help to make learning the fun and empowering experience it should be!

I am a current undergraduate student at the University Houston majoring in psychology with a minor in business administration. As a strong believer in education, I feel that tutors are essential for a student's success whether they are struggling with a particular subject or not. With that being said, I feel that tutors help expand the minds of the future, helping the child understand that they can solve any problem with practice and confidence! During my high school years, I tutored middle and high schoolers in various subjects ranging from pre-algebra to statistics. I also did private tutoring for elementary school students where I helped them solve word problems and fractions effectively! My tutoring expertise does not stop there. I am currently volunteering at a school for students who have autism where I not only assess their behavior, but also their writing and mathematical skills! As I mentioned earlier, I am a firm believer in education and I will do my very best to help the student not only know the course material for a particular exam, but also understand it, so that they can use the method whenever they need it!

I am a student at Juniata College in Pennsylvania studying Environmental Science and French. I am passionate about tutoring and I have worked as a tutor for international studentsl. I have been taking French for eight years and will study abroad this coming June. I firmly believe that every student is capable of reaching their full potential with the right training for them. I believe in the importance of tutor flexibility and I am willing to meet students where they are, accommodating a wide variety of student learning styles.I have experience working with students in need of writing and reading assistance. I am also a qualified SAT tutor and ran the tutoring program at my High School, during which I gained experience training other tutors and teaching them a wide variety of strategies.During my junior year, I completed a research project on language acquisition in second language learners. The focus of my study was on the importance of emotional support in academic settings. Since completing this study, I have retained a strong interest in this concept and work to make sure my students are confident in themselves in order to boost their academics. Everyone is capable of learning if they are taught with patience and flexibility. In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, biking, camping, backpacking, ceramics and playing my guitar.

Before, my math teacher had to give me modified work, and now she doesnt; and on the last test, I got the highest grade in the class. We both beamed with pride and joy when my student, a ninth-grader going to a private academy, told me about her achievement; our achievement. We had been working together for one and a half hours a week throughout the school year.Your success is my success. There is no greater reward than when a student who was previously struggling, gains the understanding, confidence and knowledge to succeed. Developing a good relationship and setting realistic goals are vital for a successful tutoring experience. With the proper learning strategies and a little hard work, you can achieve your goals. Take small steps, celebrate even the most modest accomplishments, and turn a disadvantage into an advantage.Learning how to overcome adversity, allows us to prove to ourselves that we can surmount our challenges, achieve our goals, and gain the knowledge and confidence we need to become successful individuals, not just in academia but in life.

My passion for teaching stems from a philosophy instilled in me by my 4th grade teacher, 'anything worth doing, is worth doing well'. My goal for educating students is to challenge them to be curious, courageous, creative, and critical thinkers in order to empower children to take charge of their own success. Learning needs to be intentional, energetic, hilarious, focused, motivating, and inspiring, which requires passionate educators, such as myself, to create environments where all of this is possible. I approach education from a whole-child perspective. A student's success is not based solely on their academic achievement, but their social/emotional development, their relationships with their peers, family, surrounding community, culture, and world. This enveloping philosophy begins with developing a student's character, heart, intellect, and creativity equally; the things that resonate from their core, so that their success is not based purely on academic standing, but who they are as a person. I love each and every one of my students and I make sure they know and feel this in the way I relate to them. Their success is directly linked to my commitment to making it so.

I'm a native Spanish speaker and an adjunct college professor with a bachelor's degree and a master's in Business Administration. For over five years, I've taught business, Spanish, and college success courses at local community colleges. I'm also a Spanish tutor and an Academic Coach. I enjoy working in small groups and one-on-one with students to personalize their lessons and adjust to their learning styles.I teach all levels of Spanish, vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, and help you improve your conversational skills. My teaching philosophy is to help students develop a robust understanding and mastery of the language, provide cultural exposure, help them communicate, and gain perspective of the Hispanic world. Students learn best through various teaching strategies and practice methods that introduce, develop, and enhance their listening, reading, writing, and communication skills, all of which I apply in my active-learning, student-centered classroom environment as well as groups and one-on-one environments. When I'm not teaching, I like spending time with the family, traveling, photography, cooking, gardening, and practicing Yoga.
