I am a writer, musician, ex-college basketball player and occasional actor from Honolulu, HI.
My first book, The Consummation of Dirk, won Starcherone-Dzanc's 8th Prize for Innovative Fiction and was recently named a finalist for Foreword Reviews' Indiefab Book of the Year Awards. I also write nonfiction, and have recently completed a collection of essays on subjects ranging from LeBron James to Karl Ove Knausgaard and David Foster Wallace. The Paris Review called my long-form piece on Knausgaard's "My Struggle" "one of the best essays written" about the Norwegian author's six-volume opus.
I received my MFA in Fiction Writing from Sarah Lawrence College, and currently teach at both my alma mater and Ramapo College of New Jersey. Meanwhile, I have been tutoring or teaching English in various capacities for over a decade, including stints as an SAT-prep instructor, private tutor, high school teacher, college professor and Assistant Language Teacher in Fukuoka, Japan.
I'm comfortable tutoring a variety of subjects, but would be a particularly good fit for students interested in fine-tuning their critical reading and writing skills, writing/revising their own written work, preparing for literature-focused subject tests, or studying Japanese language and literature.
