Our topic for today's session was area. First we reviewed the formula for the area of a square, rectangle, and parallelogram. Then I showed the student that if you divide a square in half, you get 2 triangles of equal size. I asked him to figure out the area of a triangle by himself. He was able to realize that the area of triangle is 1/2 the base times the height. We then practiced calculating the area of triangles. Then, I showed him some pictures that had many shapes with some shapes shaded in. He had to use his knowledge of area formulas to find the area of the shaded region. He did a great job! Then, we discussed the area of a trapezoid. I asked him how to find an average of something and he was able to apply this knowledge to finding the average of the 2 bases of a trapezoid. For homework, I gave him some more practice with finding the area of triangles and trapezoids.

We met today for an additional weekly meeting. The student has a project due in math on Tuesday and decided to write a rap for the project. We focused our entire session today on writing the rap and picking out the beat for the backing. It was a really fun day and she got to show her creative rhyming side. We had a blast figuring out how to include integer facts in the rap. I am excited to see the final project on Monday.
