The student finished the 81-question practice sheet given by the teacher in preparation for the algebra I skills test. She did quite well with these problems, but struggled a little with inequalities. She is going to check with the teacher and see if this sheet is sufficient for preparation for the exam. Then she will decide if we need to meet again Tuesday or not. Overall, she has strong algebra I skills and only needs a little help to master the material.

Tutoring review by Danielle in Clayton, NJ
The student and I began our session by working the Challenge Problems given to her by her math teacher. The problems consisted of exponent properties and general equation solving. We then continued to tackle word problems, and she seemed fairly confident in creating the equations that corresponded with the problems. We talked about making sure to read the whole problem and then going back through the problem, sentence by sentence, to pick out the important terms and numbers. We finished up the session by practicing the properties of exponents using several practice problems. She has a test on Thursday, and she feels ready.

The student and I worked through exponential questions today. I taught her the whole concept basically from scratch, although she knew integer exponents. She now knows how to do operations with negative exponents and fractional exponents, as well as some exponent properties (e.g. when you multiply monomials with the same base, you can add the exponents). The session went well.

We covered the student's flashcards for the previous chapter, making notes where necessary and arranging them into piles for more study and ones which she knew well. We also worked on her stories; i.e. themes that connect the different concepts together, both for the different parts of a single answer and between all of the material she is studying.

We reviewed the student's homework. We talked about different geometry theorems. We talked about intersecting chords, concentric circles, and regular hexagonal prisms. We also graphed circles and found points of intersection. We worked on similar triangles. There was also some discussion on how to manipulate equations with exponents.
