Session Summaries by PSAT Tutors

PSAT Tutoring review by Courtney in New York City, NY
The students worked on the math and writing section in order to finish the second practice test in their books. They did very well in the writing section. We went over additional strategies to help them in the proofreading section. One student showed an improvement in her math performance today. I think introducing the student to pre-calc concepts has helped significantly with her approach to the problems. After I graded the completed second test, the girls had both improved in almost all areas.

PSAT Tutoring review by Molly in New York City, NY
Today the student and I went over two of the practice test sections in his book. He seems most confident on the math section, but I am a little worried about his timing, so I've begun giving him practice sessions that reflect about how much time he'll have per problem. I've also spoken with him about strategizing to manage his time better, especially considering the penalty for wrong guesses. We also worked on one of the critical reading sections. Next session, I'd like to work with him on some strategies for timing on the critical reading section--namely, reading for information and prioritizing questions.

PSAT Tutoring review by Denise in New York City, NY
During this session, we continued our comprehensive review of math topics, focusing on ratios, solving systems of equations, and geometry. The student is grasping the material but her pacing on practice sections is a little slow. At this point, understanding the concepts is more important than speed, but pacing will be something she'll want to work on when she takes the test again next year.

PSAT Tutoring review by Molly in New York City, NY
Today we began working on speed and pacing for the test. The student completed one timed math section and one timed reading section. Speed was a challenge; she ran out of time about half way through the math section, and about 4/5 of the way through the reading section. In upcoming sections, we will practice how she can decide which questions to skip and which questions to focus her attention (and time) on.

PSAT Tutoring review by Diana in New York City, NY
We started by talking about the student's goals for the PSAT and what she felt her strengths were. Then we talked about what she wanted to work on and started looking at reading sections of the test. We looked at some strategies we could use to improve her speed and finally planned some homework exercises so she could continue to improve as the test approaches.

PSAT Tutoring review by Chelsea in New York City, NY
We went over the student's answers to the three sections he completed (one Critical Reading, one Writing, and Essay). He did much better on the Critical Reading and Writing portions. We went over his Essay and I gave him tips on what the graders are looking for. I then had him work on a Math section which we went over. He is doing better at the beginning of the section (not making as many minor mistakes / reading errors), and we went over some of the algebra/geometry principles covered in the harder questions. I told him to complete the Essay and first 3 sections of the next practice test (#10) timed, so that we can go over it on Sunday.
