I am an undergraduate student at The University of Chicago who received my high school diploma from Rowland Hall in Salt Lake City, Utah. I am excelling in all my pre-med requirements. I am not completely sure of my major, but I am leaning towards a HIPS (History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Science and Medicine) major and a French minor. I tutored a girl, middle school through high school, in any subject she required. It began as only math, but I soon began to tutor her in her science classes, especially helping her study, math, English, and French. I was able to help he raise her average grade from a C to a B+. I also have a younger sister, so while I wasn't her "tutor," I helped with a lot of math and writing homework and studying. I provide lots of practice problems, and I like to let the students lead the sessions as much as possible. I view my role as refocusing or guiding, but not pushing and telling. I hope to help students find study and homework habits that fit them rather than imposing my favorite ways upon them, though I will share any advice I have. Outside of school, I enjoy running, baking,, reading (from books like Harry Potter to Erasure) and exploring nature. The experience also taught me the importance of supplementary instruction and education. While many in the program came from schools with low college acceptance rates and families where college was not the norm, the program boasted a nearly 100% college acceptance rate. The support from the staff and the faculty gave us all the confidence and the tools needed to succeed.After graduating from the University of Chicago in 2011 I decided to take the skills I had learned from my time in the Collegiate Scholars Program and my time in college and apply them to the position of College Countdown Instructor. Hello,Having gone through some tough schools and classes (and even ones where I didn't have the attention and interest that may have helped), I know that that reality is that you will not understand every subject quickly.Did Einstein understand relativity in an hour, or did he have to work years to get it?I was an assistant to a Nobel Prize winner when younger. You know I did not get everything right away. But he was a great teacher and empathetic person and it worked!So I know that anyone can learn almost anything even if they think the subject is hard, or the others are "too smart".Our school system is not always perfect about motivating learners on all subjects. Nor does it deal with pressures and expectations from other classmates, people and what society expects of you. SO WHAT! I truly love to see the smile when someone says, "I get it".As a public school JHS and HS teacher, my license is in Biology 7-12 and have taught other sciences. I also have advance degrees in other areas and have taught it on a college level.I have a BA in Economics from Queens College (but had more courses in science), an MA in Economics from Northwestern University, and MBA in Marketing and Finance from the University of Chicago, and an MA in Teaching from Relay Graduate School of Education.I do not have a "favorite" subject to tutor.
