I am a dedicated teacher because I am a dedicated learner and I strive to instill in my students that same passion for knowledge and mental exercise, all while improving the student's grades. My tutoring experience stretches back to when I was a high school student tutoring students younger than me in various math and science classes including SAT prep, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, calculus, biology, chemistry, and physics. Now, as a graduate of Boston College with a degree in mathematics and economics who has completed the premedical prerequisite courses, I hope to continue my journey as a tutor.I employ a teaching strategy of explaining important concepts, practicing problems, and reviewing mistakes. My method is to begin by finding the student's weaknesses and explaining those difficult concepts to the students. I then guide the student through practice problems and finally discuss with the student his or her mistakes and show the student how to avoid those mistakes in the future. My teaching strategy relies heavily on practice because I believe through practice, the student can fully synthesize the concepts learned in class and in the tutoring session. Guided practice also allows the student to work through problems and receive help getting past parts of problems that give them difficulty. Through this method, the student will feel more comfortable working through homework problems and answering difficult test questions.I believe that learning is about understanding important concepts, not memorizing a bunch of formulas, and that obtaining the right answer is less important than trying to understand a problem and devising a method to solve it. The ability to think critically is applicable to all facets of a student's life and academic career. I, as a tutor, hope to help the student hone that ability and apply it towards a successful academic career.I am available any day of the week and can meet at the student's home, at the library, a coffee shop, or at a park. I'm flexible and hope to make learning fun for the student. I assign optional homework assignments to provide extra practice. I go over the homework assignments if the student chooses to do them. I also offer written progress reports for parents upon request.Contact me to set up a tutoring session!

Mark's teaching journey began while he was getting his bachelor's degree in elementary education and computer science from Boston College. After landing his first job in the Boston public school system, he knew he was in it for the long haul! He has kept this first job for 23 years, even while he was earning his master's degree in teaching and math from Northeastern University. He is currently working in a new position in Natick, MA.Mark's tutoring style is centered on empathy. When working with students, he asks himself: "If I know nothing about this, how would I present this so it could make sense to the weakest performing student?" He gathers as much information about his students' learning styles as possible in order to plan the best path forward. Spontaneity and humor are also tools in his teaching repertoire. "Humor is essential for helping people overcome obstacles, in learning and in life," he says. While in college, Mark taught at a private learning center for children who struggle with learning differences. He also nurtured his love of film, music, and sports.Self-Bio:Graduated from Boston College with a double major in education and math/computer science. He then completed his masters degree at Northeastern University with a concentration in mathematics and teaching. He has been a teacher in the Boston Public Schools for the past 23 years in the area of mathematics. He has held positions such as department head and has worked with many types of students.
I graduated from Boston College with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in History and a minoring in environmental studies. I then received a Masters in History from the University of Arizona. My experience working with students has consisted of teaching AP US and World History at a charter school in Tucson, BASIS Oro Valley, mentoring and leading discussions with undergraduate students at the University of Arizona, and giving tours to elementary school students at the Arizona History Museum. I am available to tutor students in history and in environmental science. My favorite subject to tutor is American History because of its relevance to issues that exist today and because of how it connects to so many other fields of study. I am passionate about helping students because I have found joy in learning about History and of the natural world and I am motivated to share this with others. My teaching philosophy and tutoring style usually involves finding what aspect of the subject matter captivates the students the most and guiding them so that they can find out the answers on their own. I love studying history because everything has a history. Learning more about people and places in the past can help with understanding almost any aspect of the present day. I am also drawn to environmental studies because it involves the understandings of people and of nature and their relationship with each other. I look forward to tutoring kids because I hope that my students will understand the multiple paths that history can show them. I hope to ascertain the best method for each student to learn. I also hope my students will be curious about humanity's relationship with the environment so as to better understand their own impacts on the world around them.
I had an interesting career as a broker and then worked in fund management. There, my interest for the academic world grew and I found a passion in learning. I began drifting more into the academic world and then combining my studies with my work life. I enjoy teaching, guide and monitoring people's progress.
I enjoy being on the other side of education as a tutor while still improving my own understanding of the subject.Upon graduating from college, I developed tutoring skills while helping high school students prepare for their SAT II Subject Exams, covering wide ranges including math, biology, and chemistry. I was responsible for elaborating on answers using relevant figures and innovative examples, creating catchy mnemonics, and solving problems from students' point of view. As a tutor, I remained accessible but maintained an appropriate distance to earn students' respect, and five out of ten students improved their scores by more than 200 points. Through these teaching experiences, I have learned not only to become a teacher from the students' perspective, but also what it takes to be an effective educational provider and a mentor. While taking six medical school courses throughout my graduate school program, I have been able to practice and enhance teaching methods by organizing study groups that regularly conducted review sessions before exams, highlighting important concepts made during the lectures, sharing concise notes and outlines, bringing up pertinent and innovative questions, and academically stimulating my peers without any unwelcoming pressures. Through these learning and teaching environments, I have directly experienced what interactive measures really foster healthy learning environments. With these experiences and my avid passion, I am confident I will be a valuable asset to your student.
I am currently studying for a Master's in Secondary Education; additionally, I recently obtained my Master's in English Language and Literature from Boston College. During the course of that degree, I concentrated in Irish Literature and Culture. Previous to that course of study, I double majored in undergrad, studying both English and history. My specialties for history are world history and American history.I love tutoring students in the subjects I am passionate about. I believe that all learning can be made fun and interesting, and I enjoy working with students to find ways to tailor the subject material to their interests and everyday lives. For the past few months, I have been teaching students of all ages (age 4 up to adult) English as a secondary language. These students are from East Asia and have varying degrees of fluency in English. I have found I particularly enjoy working with young children and finding ways to engage them in learning. In my everyday life, I go on many walks with my dog, and I read a lot of books (as one might expect). My favorite books are in the young adult genre, followed closely by adult science fiction and fantasy. Sometimes I write papers (for fun!) on science fiction or fantasy books, movies, and TV shows and present them at academic conferences.
I am an experienced, certified English teacher for grades K-12 and would love to help your child improve his/her reading comprehension, writing, grammar, vocabulary, study, speaking, phonics, and overall communication skills. I have taught multiple English, Writing, Journalism, and Marketing classes and have served in Admissions and Marketing positions in a private high school for the past seven years. I earned my Master's Degree in Teaching from Fairleigh Dickinson University, as well as Bachelor's degrees in both English and Communications from Boston College. Most importantly, I am a mother of three, so I understand the challenges and stresses our children face in the school environment today. I also hold my teaching certification in Elementary Education. Prior to teaching, I worked in the corporate sector for ten years. Thus, I can help your child learn the skills he/she will need to succeed in the classroom, as well as in the real world. I look forward to helping your child build his/her skills, confidence, and love of learning.

Through experiences such as youth political conferences, authoring an original political discourse column, tutoring elementary students, and working to expand access to Speech and Debate around Philadelphia I have developed a passion for advocacy, government, and public service. I have taken 11 AP courses such as US Government, Comparative Government, US History, and Macro economics - earning As and 5s on all
Hello! I'm a student at BC. I've always loved to help others understand. When I was little I would have "class" and turn my younger siblings into my students. In elementary school, I began to receive great personal satisfaction from helping my classmates and friends with any homework they were confused about. Throughout high school I volunteered as a tutor since I enjoyed it so much and now I work as a part-time tutor and mentor to the children of newly-arrived immigrants in Boston. I have a very individualized approach to teaching, drawing on the interests, experiences, and style of learning of my students. My areas of speciality are both English and Spanish grammar, reading/writing, and fluency. I would love to help you/your child in any way I'm able!
Hello! My name is Katrina. I am 24 years old and currently living in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. I graduated from Boston College in 2015 with a degree in Psychology and went on to work for a recruitment firm in downtown Boston for almost 2 years. I left my position to explore opportunities working with children in an academic setting and to begin a graduate program in the fall of 2017. I want to share my passion for learning with children, as I did when I was a volunteer tutor for high school students during my college years. I have experience tutoring students in reading, writing, mathematics (up to Algebra 1) and basic Spanish. As a former recruiter, I am also well-versed in resume writing, interviews, college application essays and public speaking. I am open to and have experience tutoring students of all ages.
In one way or another, I've been an educator and a mentor all of my life. The oldest in my family, many afternoons in my childhood were spent helping my three younger brothers and my younger sister to understand the concepts that I myself had been taught a few years before. When I was eleven I joined the Boy Scouts, and very quickly I again found myself in positions of authority, guiding the younger scouts as they learned the skills and accomplished the feats necessary to ascend in rank. In college, although I studied the humanities, I spent a summer teaching inner-city kids in Boston geometry to help prepare them for high school, and in the past year I have gained a fresh perspective on the ways that we learn and how we embrace new challenges in my work with preschoolers.Although I have not officially been an educator for long, my experiences have taught me that patience is the most crucial virtue that a teacher can have. In my work, I have encountered and interacted with children and young adults with a host of challenges to their individual learning. I have witnessed the not-yet-verbal approach of toddlers, the nonverbal gap with which AS students face, the frustrations of students working past dyslexia, and the anger of children from broken homes. I have learned that what most students want and need is not primarily to be told what to do and how to solve their problems, but first to be listened to. And so that is what I want to offer.I am here to take your problems seriously, however big or small you may think you are, however silly you may feel admitting them. I want you to tell me what it is that you think is keeping you from reaching your fullest potential, and I want to help empower you to overcome it.
I've been tutoring since I was 14, working with students one-on-one, online, and in classrooms. I recently completed a BA/MS in Biology and Quantitative Finance at Boston College and now work at a Boston biotech startup. I tutor math, biology, and reading/writing, with math being my favorite subject because it builds problem-solving skills and confidence. My tutoring style is supportive, engaging, and curiosity driven. I believe questions spark diligence, and diligence leads to success. Many of my students have gone on to achieve wonderful things, and I'm proud to be their go-to resource along the way. Outside of academics, I'm an avid reader and I love thoughtful debate, which keeps my teaching style creative and adaptable.
Having just completed my first year of college, I am beyond familiar with the feeling of being frustrated in understanding certain subjects or concepts. Yet, in times like these, I always find myself reaching out to my peers for help (whether this was a classmate, tutor, or teacher). After seeing how much a tutor could improve my performance in subjects I struggled in, I decided to use my own academic strengths and help others. My tutoring experience ranges from helping middle and high schoolers with math concepts (from pre-Algebra to Calculus) along with teaching Japanese kids English in Japan for two years (pre-K-8th grade). I am passionate about giving other students the pride and joy that comes with great academic performance along with understanding challenging topics!Outside of tutoring, I like to play soccer, run cross-country, and cook!
I have a Master's degree in Hispanic Studies from Boston College and have taught Spanish in the classroom and 1 on 1. My goal is to help students succeed in Spanish by developing their critical thinking skills, providing study techniques that are specific to second language acquisition, and offering a different teaching style than the students' current teacher in order to optimize learning.
As someone who has always had a passion for education, I love sharing that passion with others by helping them further their studies and work on areas they wish to improve. Additionally, I place a strong emphasis on thinking critically and analytically over simple rote memorization. I am currently a student at Boston College and majoring in Biochemistry. My current position as a student offers me an ideal perspective for tutoring both because the subjects are fresh in my mind and also because I have a variety of study strategies I use myself that I can share with my students. I am friendly, passionate and patient in my work, and would love the opportunity to work with you!
My name is Saintel Metelus, I am fluent in four languages : Haitian Creole, French, Spanish and English. I have a bachelor degree in languages from University of Massachusetts Lowell and a master degree in Education from Boston College.
Learning and teaching is never a process which can be properly dictated and planned for, it must evolve based on regular and meaningful interaction between a student and teacher. It is with this mindset that I approach every student I work with, always being cognizant of a specific student's strengths and weaknesses and working to improve every aspect of their academic journey. Moreover, I currently hold my Master's degree in Political Science and International Relations from Boston College where I wrote my thesis on the Middle East entitled, "Economic Opportunity and Inequality as Contributing Factors to the Arab Spring: The Cases of Tunisia and Egypt". Prior to this I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Communication and History with Magna Cum Laude and Dean's List First honors, also from Boston College. Beyond this I have done certificate coursework at the National University of Singapore in Game Theory, Cambridge University (UK) in ancient empires and politics, Venice International University in globalization and its effects on the modern world, international business, social sustainability, & modern US, EU, and NATO relations, and Boston University in wine studies.I truly look forward to helping with your academic pursuits and making the learning process a fruitful one.

I am a currently attending Graduate School and working towards my Masters of Science in Education for Urban Adolescents with Special Needs (Grades 7-12). I enjoy tutoring because I find contributing to another person's joy and sense of accomplishment immensely gratifying.I am a person who enjoys different and challenging experiences, and I believe my track record as a tutor is an example of that. I have had the opportunity of engaging in the most unique mixture of peculiar, fun, and stimulating positions. My experience ranges from ESL classes with Somali refugee students in high school to Special Needs students in elementary school. I have also done some freelance tutoring intermittently for friends and family. All of these experiences have been contributed to my teaching style. My philosophy for tackling challenging academic subjects is also an outgrowth of my own personal study habits.I believe that organization is key. I have found that a certain combination of systematic organization and simplification of every detail helps to illuminate the solution. Having a structured and repeatable approach can then be engrained in the thought process through repetition, and improvement will surely follow.Furthermore, I believe positive reinforcement and encouragement are also invaluable tutoring tools. Inspiring confidence in students so that they don't become discouraged by difficulties they encounter keeps them engaged and more inclined to self-improvement.
I am a graduate of Boston College and The University of Pittsburgh School of Law. I received a Bachelor of Arts in both English and Economics,I am a graduate of The College of William and Mary. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Literary & Cultural Studies with a focus on philosophy and theater. Since graduation, I have traveled extensively, tutoring children of immigrants in California for the “No Child Left Behind” program; adults in Manhattan looking to improve their English (as I am a certified ESL instructor); and private clients in the Veneto region of Italy. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about English, Literature, and History. In my experience helping struggling students prepare for Standardized Tests, we always seem to have the most fun (with remarkable advancements) prepping for the Critical Reading and Writing portions of the exams. I am a firm proponent of education, believing it to be absolutely necessary for an improved quality of life, and I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students. In my spare time, I enjoy reading that which enriches my life, yoga, running, and the game of ice hockey.
I graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 2011 where I received a Bachelor of Arts in French Studies with minors in English and Linguistics. I began my tutoring career during my time as an undergraduate student and worked at my university's Academic Enhancement Center where I tutored in French, English, Philosophy, and Sociology. After graduating, I spent time as an English teaching assistant in France. After returning to the US, I began working at the Alliance Franaise where I taught French for three years to adults and youth at various levels. I also spent time working in a French immersion school with children of many different ages. For the past two years I taught French to undergraduate students at Boston College where I was also working toward a Master's Degree in French Literature. Having obtained the Master's, I am now beginning a PhD at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. I am very passionate about French and about communicating my love for it to others in a way that would be contagious. This is certainly the area in which I have the most experience and the deepest affection, but I also enjoy tutoring in a wide variety of subjects. I have a particular love for literature, whether in French or English, and have a strong desire to see an increase in the number of students who find themselves enamored of it in the same way as I do. If I can help to produce that in some way, I will be satisfied. I think that education and rigorous, critical, analytical thinking are of the utmost importance in our day and age. I desire to encourage these things. In my spare time, I enjoy reading books on all kinds of subjects, playing and listening to music, and spending time with people from other cultures/countries.

I especially enjoy working one-on-one with students as it enables us to work together to discover their strengths and interests which allows me to more easily target areas of weakness and create unique, individualized, and exciting lessons and experiences. As an educator I truly believe in the value of helping students develop life long learning skills that can be applied throughout various disciplines and levels, and I strongly believe that tutoring is a great way to achieve immediate success as well as develop long term skills that will encourage mindful thinking and increased academic rigor. I received my B.S. from Union College where I majored in Chemistry and double minored in Dance and Theatrical Makeup. I then received my M.S. from Boston College where I specialized in Organic Chemistry. I have been teaching Chemistry and Physical Science in public and private high school for the past 3 years. I have been doing private tutoring Chemistry since I was a sophomore in college. I particularly love showing students how what they are studying is directly related to the world around them using traditional lecture as well as interactive visuals. I truly believe every student can succeed at science and do everything in my power to instill a passion and love for science in all my students. Outside of science, I spend most of my free time reading, running or performing in various dance companies.

I graduated from Colorado State University in 2014 with a bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering. I am certified as an E.I. and a P.E. Currently, I am working towards a master's degree in Social Work with a focus on Latinx communities at Boston College. The bulk of my tutoring experience comes from my time in the Peace Corps. I served as a Community Environmental Conservation volunteer in Panama from 2015 to 2018. I co-taught Science, Environmental Education, and English in a multi grade one room schoolhouse with students aged 5 to 12, I also tutored middle and high school students in English after school. I worked for four years as an engineer at a small municipality in the water quality group where I managed the water quality database and performed process optimizations for water and wastewater. While I no longer practice engineering, I am very passionate about water and wastewater treatment and processes and am most excited to help future engineers achieve their certifications. My philosophy around engineering exams is that while it is important to know how to do the problems, it is even more important to learn how to think about problem solving. In my spare time I enjoy reading, hiking, camping, and skiing. I love backpacking and always spend at least a week of the summer on solo backpacking trips.
I've always had a huge passion for theatre, but even some of my friends don't know that I also love math, art history, and writing! I earned my BA at Boston College and my MFA at The Boston Conservatory. My masters program was a dual performance and teaching degree which provided a pedagogical point of view and the opportunity to be a teaching assistant. I tutor several math subjects, including geometry, algebra I and II, and SAT math. Math has always been one of my favorite subjects to study and tutor because I enjoy the satisfaction of tackling a challenging puzzle. I would say that as a teacher, I like to guide my students and let them draw their own conclusions whenever possible. I want a student to leave a tutoring session feeling like they can rely on their own instincts and abilities when working on their own. My hobbies include swimming, theatre, singing, kayaking, reading, drawing, walking dogs, and watching too much Netflix. I know what it's like to struggle in school, but I also know the power of finding an appreciation for even the most dreaded subjects. I'd love to help your child articulate their goals, identify the strengths they already possess, and conquer those academic obstacles they're facing.

Hi, I'm Lilli. I'm an English Reading and SAT/ACT Tutor based out of Brookline, MA. I also have experience working with elementary-age kids in classroom settings.
I am a graduate of Boston College, having received my Bachelor of Arts in Film Studies with a minor in Economics. In both employment and volunteer situations, I have extensive experience with childhood education, having tutored at a boys' elementary charter school in Brooklyn; worked as a site assistant at a YMCA elementary after school program in New Hampshire; tutored at a women's shelter in Boston; acted as a reading buddy at a Boys and Girls club in Boston; and volunteered at a nursery school in New Hampshire. In addition to these formal settings of education assistance, I was a counselor at a co-ed YMCA summer camp for six years, which gave me countless opportunities to grow my own understanding of how kids learn.I tutor elementary math and reading and truly love both subjects. I believe elementary education is as much about understanding the student's way of thinking and helping her or him absorb the material in a way that compliments that approach as it is a one-way impartation of knowledge. As such I try very hard to patiently go through each step of the student's thought process with him or her, in order to personalize my tutoring to the student. Having worked with children for so long I absolutely believe that they all have incredible brilliance in ways that are not always exposed by standard education, so I try very hard to tap into that imagination in order to help them become the best scholars they can be.I spend the majority of my free time reading, watching documentaries, biking, swimming, walking around New York, traveling by the subway to new places, and attending free events in the city.
I have been teaching high school math and SAT test prep since 2002 and GRE prep since 2008.When I am working with a student, I find it is best to first determine what areas they struggle with. Do they need help with basic concepts? Do they need help, in general, with test-taking? Once I am clear on what areas we need to focus on, we can really start to make progress. I feel that different approaches work with different students. The type of learner a student is will dictate how I can best help them succeed. I enjoy tutoring and interacting with all students whether they are "terrible" at math, or simply need a refresher!
I am a graduate of Boston College where I studied Education and Psychology. I received my Master's in Education at the University of Notre Dame. Since graduation, I have taught Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades in both general education and special education settings. Tutors who attended Boston College have firsthand knowledge of what competitive college applications look like and can help you strengthen your academic foundation, prepare for standardized tests, and develop strong study habits before applying. While they can't speak to current admission decisions, their own BC admission experience and understanding of what makes applicants competitive can provide valuable perspective. They're particularly helpful for SAT and ACT prep, where strong tutoring can significantly impact scores—the national average SAT score is around 1050, while competitive schools like BC typically see admitted students well above this mark.
Boston College graduates have navigated BC's demanding academic environment and can share strategies that actually work—from time management techniques to approaches for handling heavy reading loads and rigorous exams. They understand how to excel in specific classes, which resources are most helpful, and how to build on foundational concepts that BC professors expect you to master. This practical wisdom, combined with personalized 1-on-1 instruction tailored to your learning style, helps you not just understand material but develop the study habits that lead to long-term success.
Boston College tutors understand the academic rigor you'll encounter at a competitive institution, which directly informs how they approach test preparation. They've taken standardized tests themselves and succeeded in BC's selective admissions process, so they know what score ranges are competitive and which concepts require the deepest understanding. Additionally, BC's strong emphasis on analytical thinking and writing means BC alumni tutors often excel at helping students develop the critical thinking skills that improve performance across the SAT, ACT, and AP exams.
Absolutely. If you're currently a BC student taking courses like Theology, Philosophy, Core Sciences, or courses specific to BC's curriculum, connecting with alumni who took those same classes provides valuable advantages. They've studied the material under BC's professors and understand how to approach assignments, exams, and papers the way BC instructors expect. Even if a tutor didn't take your exact course, their BC background means they understand the institution's academic standards and how to excel within them.
