How can a tutor help your child master the SSAT?

The SSAT is administered to students in grades 4-12 who are hoping to attend private schools. The exam has three levels: elementary, middle, and upper. Each exam has four sections: quantitative, reading comprehension, verbal reasoning, and an essay. The difficulty and length of the exam is adjusted to the grade level, but as a whole, the exam tests students on a summary of what they've learned in school up to the exam. If your student struggles in any of these areas or needs a refresher, they can work with a personal tutor to prepare for the SSAT. With the help of the educational directors at Varsity Tutors, you can find an SSAT tutor in New York City, New York, who can help your student with their test preparation.

Your student's SSAT score is based on the multiple-choice questions in the math, reading, and verbal sections. The essay is not scored but is instead sent to schools so that they can assess the student's writing skills. This means that your student's writing skills can be an important factor, as the school of choice will be reading the exact wording of your student. If your child struggles in writing, then SSAT tutoring in New York City could be an excellent solution. A personal tutor can work individually with your student to analyze their current writing ability and pinpoint the areas where they need the most help. Every grade level has a different set of expectations for students' writing abilities, and your student's tutor can compare them to these standards and discover where improvements need to occur.

SSAT Tutoring review by Rebekah in New York City, NY
The student and I went through the directions for each section and talked a lot with her mom about how to check over her answers and not feel pressured on the test. Now that she has taken it, it seems like we will need to have a different approach in explaining how to go through it.

Today, the student and I added on vocabulary words from e to g (ending with graceful). We then reviewed area of triangles. We covered essay strategy, and I will be assigning an essay prompt for her to complete for Wednesday. Lastly, we went over homework and reviewed the problems she missed. I will be assigning her vocabulary, an essay, and extra math problems for homework. No concerns.

SSAT Tutoring review by Pieta in New York City, NY
We began with math using the test prep book. We looked at a list of math terms/definitions that the test expects you to know. The student circled the words he was unsure of and we discussed them. The test uses words like integer, consecutive, quotient, sum, and product in its questions without defining them. I made a chart for him of the four operations and words associated with them. He can add to this chart as he comes upon more terms. Reading: we read three passages. He did well on one passage from the practice test. We will continue to work on these. We ended with some analogies; he is making great progress on these. Homework: 1) continue learning multiplication table, 2) continue learning vocab words.
