I am a 2018 graduate of College of the Holy Cross with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Education. With a dedication to service and drive to combat education inequality, I moved to New York City for a 2 year commitment with Teach For America, to teach Kindergarten in Brooklyn. During this time, I experienced the gaps in our education system and led my classroom with love in a high paced, emotionally demanding work environment. For my own mental health as an educator, I became a 250 hr Registered Yoga Teacher and have loved practicing and building a community with CorePower Yoga. My passion lies in socioemotional learning and mindfulness in everyday life. I graduated in June 2020 from Relay Graduate School of Education with a Masters of Arts in Teaching General and Special Education, grades 1-6. Currently I am a graduate student at Teachers College, Columbia University for mental health counseling. In my free time, you can find me baking, planning my next trip, or working on a new yoga inversion.

I am a graduate of New Mexico State University, with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. My studies there included extensive physics and computer science coursework as well. While in college, I tutored many fellow students, which is how I got my start with tutoring. Since then I have tutored all ages of students, both in-person and online, in many math, science, and computer coding subjects. My tutoring style is interactive. For any student whom I teach, the goal is always that the student is able to work the problems and explain the steps. As professors of mine said when I was in school, "Math is not a spectator sport", and "You can't do physics without a calculator in your hand". When I teach, the student does as much of the work as he or she can; if stuck on something I will provide hints as needed, and I will only take over and complete a problem as a last resort. My personal learning style emphasizes understanding over repetition, although I am very aware that this is not true for everyone - many students require substantial repetition in order to gain confidence and mastery. Most of my spare time recently has been directed towards the development of a mathematically-oriented computer game, which I hope to publish within a year or two. In addition to game development, I also enjoy hiking, biking, camping, and playing chess.

Reading and writing have interested me for as long as I can remember. My parents took us to the library every week to find new books and for story hour. I began writing my own creative fiction stories in 6th grade. My love of discussing and writing about literature and other reading made majoring in English Education a perfect fit. At Bowling Green State University, I gained experience with academic essays by tutoring students through the Writing Center. I worked primarily with first-year students on argumentative essays, but sometimes had the opportunity to work with graduate students on research papers and with English as a Second Language students needing help applying grammar rules.Since 2009, I've been teaching middle and high school Language Arts courses ranging from 6th grade reading through Senior Composition. I help my students to recognize the strengths they already have and use those strengths to improve other areas.I am working toward a Master's Degree in English with a concentration in Rhetoric and Composition at Northern Kentucky University. This will position me to teach first-year composition courses at community and 2-year colleges. It has also provided me with more strategies for teaching writing.

My tutoring and teaching experience includes being a bootcamp Python and SQL instructor, teaching and tutoring a GMAT prep class, and tutoring math and computer programming in college. When I'm learning something for the first time, I try to break up what I don't know into approachable chunks. Then I work my way through each smaller block with a combination of reading, practice and reflection about how the chunk I'm working on fits into the bigger picture.

I have a Master of Science degree from UCLA specializing in Chemistry, and I also have a Bachelor of Science degree with a major of Chemistry, and two minors: Physics and Spanish. I have tutored students since I myself was a student in Middle School, then tutored Chemistry in college and grad school for people earning their Bachelors degrees. I have been tutoring while also being an Upper School Science and Math teacher for over 19 years. I teach all levels of Chemistry (including AP), Physics (regular and honors), AP Environmental Science, Honors Precalculus, Trigonometry, Algebra 1 and 2, Earth Science, and Physical Science and have taught Chemistry and Physics at the college level as well. My favorite topics to tutor are Chemistry and Precalculus/Trigonometry.I am a patient teacher who can explain problems in many different ways according to how individual students learn best. I only ask that you know and explain to me what topics you do not know or get so far. I know that every student can learn a subject with a combination of practice and patience, but I insist upon consistent effort and sessions. As an educator I do not support last minute cramming as the primary learning method of content for students as it does not lead to retention of material, mastery of larger themes, or the ability to differentiate between subtle differences when problem-solving on tests and exams. I will help my clients when they need extra sessions before Final Exams and AP Exams, but those who have been working the hardest throughout the school year to regularly improve will get preference over those students who are panicked at the last minute, but have put off meeting with me.

Conversational French Tutor • +10 Subjects
I am a senior level college student majoring in French and Francophone Studies with a minor in World Language and ESL education. I am passionate about both teaching and the French language, and I am so grateful I have this opportunity to do both.My love for French was discovered in high school. From the very beginning, it clicked with me and I knew within my first few French classes I wanted to make a career out of it.Throughout high school, I tutored French and took on as much learning as I could, whether it be helping grade papers, scouring McKay's for books written in French, etc. With language, I think the best way to learn is through immersion and contextual based curriculum.Outside of French some other subjects I love are English, History, Math, and anything to do with Art.In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my horse and dog, hiking, or just being outside in general.

I love being a facilitator of knowledge and helping students become independent learners. I think that seeking help where you are not clear is an important part of the independent learning process and it helps build confidence. I enjoy being part of that process of helping someone become more confident in what they are learning.I have an MBA from the University of Akron where I majored in Finance as a Fulbright scholar. I graduated in the top 15 percent of my graduating class with Financial Management Association honors. I love helping others learn and sharing my knowledge with them. During my time at the University of Akron I was president of the Fulbright Student Association. I also served as secretary of the Cross-Cultural Student Association. I love working with people from different parts of the world. I tutored students privately during my time in graduate school. My focus is on Corporate Finance. Some of my favourite subjects are the theory of the firm, portfolio theory (capital allocation to risky assets, optimal risky portfolios, risk and return); the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM); security analysis (macroeconomic and industry analysis, equity valuation models and financial statement analysis).I currently work as an analyst at a small business development agency. Some of my hobbies include hiking, travelling, long distance biking and burning the dance floor to some salsa or bachata beats. If you cannot find me doing any of the above, then you are most likely to find me baking a pie at my best friend's bakery downtown. I cannot declare myself a foodie but when I travel to other cities, I think the best way to explore is by eating my way through the entire city and then burning off the calories by walking through museums and galleries. One of my side gigs during graduate school was modelling and acting. The skills that I learnt during those days helped me learn how to adapt to my students' learning methods and adjust my teaching style from one student to the next. I love to start off a tutoring session by hearing out the student and what their background is. This helps me gauge how much scope we have to cover to have the student fully confident in the subject matter. I always encourage students to come prepared with questions including the so-called "silly questions because those are, more often than not, the breakthrough questions that help students piece everything together.

Frequently Asked Questions
Varsity Tutors' Other category covers a broad range of academic subjects beyond traditional core areas, including test preparation (GRE, GMAT, LSAT), professional certifications, specialized academic subjects, and skills-based courses. Whether you're preparing for a standardized test, need help with a niche subject, or want to develop specific academic skills, we can connect you with tutors who specialize in these areas. Each tutor brings expertise tailored to your unique learning goals.
In a classroom, teachers typically pace instruction for the average student, which means some students move too quickly while others fall behind. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows tutors to adapt their teaching to your specific learning style, speed, and needs. Tutors can spend extra time on challenging concepts, skip material you've already mastered, and use examples relevant to your interests—creating a customized learning experience that leads to faster progress and deeper understanding.
Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors across all skill levels, from absolute beginners to advanced learners. Whether you're starting fresh with a new subject, preparing for a major exam, refining specialized knowledge, or aiming for mastery, tutors can meet you where you are. During the matching process, you'll share your current skill level and goals so you get connected with someone experienced in helping students at your specific stage.
Research shows that personalized 1-on-1 instruction significantly boosts learning outcomes compared to classroom-only instruction. Tutors help by breaking down complex material into digestible steps, identifying and addressing specific knowledge gaps, providing targeted practice, and offering immediate feedback. This focused, responsive approach accelerates progress and builds confidence—especially valuable for challenging or specialized subjects where students need expert guidance tailored to their unique questions and learning pace.
Getting started is straightforward. Simply share your subject, current skill level, and learning goals with Varsity Tutors. We'll match you with a tutor who has the right expertise and teaching style for your needs. Once matched, you'll work with your tutor to set up a schedule and begin personalized instruction. Many students see measurable progress within the first few sessions as tutors tailor their approach specifically to how you learn best.
Yes. Varsity Tutors understands that students have packed schedules. You'll work directly with your tutor to find session times that work for both of you, whether that's early mornings, evenings, or weekends. Most students find that even consistent 1-2 hour sessions per week produces noticeable improvement. Your tutor can also adjust frequency based on your progress and upcoming deadlines or exams.
Good tutors track progress through multiple measures: improved scores on practice tests or assignments, deeper understanding of concepts you previously struggled with, increased confidence when tackling difficult material, and better performance in actual coursework or exams. Your tutor should regularly check in on what's working and adjust the approach if needed. Most students notice concrete progress—whether that's higher test scores, clearer comprehension, or greater independence with the material—within the first month of consistent tutoring.
