AP Calculus AB Tutor • +14 Subjects
I am a rising sophomore majoring in Computer Science with a minor in Data Science at Rice University in Houston, TX. Naturally, my favorite subjects to teach are math and computer science, particularly programming languages like Python, Java, and Scratch. I have found great enrichment in these seemingly daunting areas, and I hope to make them more easily accessible for others. As a founding member of the Ready for College Leadership club (RCL), I mentored high school freshmen and sophomores to help them succeed in high school and prepare for college admissions, while also providing academic aid. The best part of working with students is watching them grow not just as a learner, but also as a thinker. I always encourage students to be curious and let their true interests be incorporated into lessons. In my spare time, I love learning languages; I am a heritage Spanish speaker and a self-taught Portuguese speaker. I also enjoy playing guitar and practicing new songs to sing.
Maham
Algebra 2 Tutor
I am currently an undergraduate student at Rice University pursuing a bachelor of science in biochemistry and cell biology on the pre-med track. One of my most memorable experiences in the medical field has been working as a research intern at Texas Children's Hospital and collaborating with genetic specialists to publish a research paper about a rare genetic disease. Medicine is truly one of my greatest passions, and biology has been one of my favorite subjects to tutor through the peer mentorship program at my high school. Through this program, I have also extensively tutored math (from middle school math all the way through IB Mathematics) and find myself drawn by the methodical nature of the subject. Many times, I find that students simply label math as "difficult" because the concepts are brand new and numbers seem like a foreign language. Relating math concepts to simpler everyday ones is one of the many strategies I use when tutoring math, and I have found a lot of success through it. Throughout high school, I have been very active in my school community as the Editor-in-Chief of the school newspaper, president of the Speech and Debate Team, and president and founder of the Random Acts of Kindness Club. Through these roles, I have mentored younger students in areas such as writing, research, and public speaking. Additionally, I am fluent in 4 languages (English, Urdu, Arabic, and Spanish), although my favorite one to teach is Spanish. Attending an international school has emphasized to me the importance of diversity, inclusion, and tolerance, and I believe that learning a new language is one of the best ways to reinforce these ideals. In my spare time, you can find me engrossed in arts and crafts, running my Etsy store, or volunteering my local art museum's kids' crafts classes. I also love listening to music, creating music on my violin, and singing various genres.

I am a graduate of Augustana College, where I received a Bachelor's degree, as well as Northwestern University, where I received a Master's of Science. After graduation, I worked as a research assistant at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. I have had experience in tutoring college-aged and adult students in the fields of research methods, Philosophy of Mind, and writing. I have also given informal instruction to friends with regards to math, coding, and preparation for standardized tests. I am especially interested in tutoring for Python coding, math, and test prep. As a self-taught coder, I am especially excited to see other people succeed in the field of Python. As somebody who had to learn to love math, I am excited to see students understand the workings of mathematics. Finally, as somebody who has been taking standardized tests since grade school, I enjoy helping others understand the workings of standardized tests and the skills (both academic and personal) needed to succeed at them. My teaching approach emphasizes flexibility and empathy; I firmly believe that there are always multiple ways of reaching the same solution, and I recognize that students may have different educational foundations. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, coding, and re-learning how to play the piano.

I am a science writer and podcaster with a rigorous academic background who is passionate about sharing my knowledge of chemistry with curious minds. I earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry and Asian art history from UC Berkeley and completed a PhD in inorganic chemistry at MIT. I have five years of experience teaching college-level general and organic chemistry courses at various institutions in California, Massachusetts, New York, and Texas, and hope to expand on my experience as a private tutor. Often a required subject for other classes, chemistry is often considered "the central science" as it's related to biology and physics, and I appreciate that chemical principles can be observed throughout daily life from cooking to medicine to electronics. I believe that education is the world's greatest social equalizer and hope that my students learn to make new connections between classes and other aspects of their life. Outside of science, I love dogs, food, and the outdoors.

Get to know me professionally: Why are you passionate about helping students? I understand that navigating different forms of coursework can be difficult, especially as you continue to progress in your academic career. I believe that careful consideration should be given to how you study for a particular subject, and I am passionate about helping other students determine the best practice for them so they can strengthen their academic independence. Describe your experience working with students. I spent the latter half of my high school years tutoring my peers in addition to continued mentoring and tutoring in undergrad as well in two specific roles. As an Advisor, I provided mentorship and guidance to first-years throughout the entirety of their inaugural semesters in college and beyond. As a Fellow, I worked in intensive, monthlong programs to tutor, mentor, and prepare incoming freshmen for a collegiate education in STEM fields, though I continued to serve outside of this role during the academic year as well. In addition, I spent about two years teaching Anatomy and Physiology at the collegiate level. Where did you get your education? What degree(s) have you attained? B.A. in Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Rice University, 2017 M.S. in Medical Sciences, University of North Texas Health Science Center, 2019 What degree(s) are you working toward? M.D., University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine, 2025 What subjects do you tutor? Mostly STEM-related What is your favorite subject(s) to tutor, and why? I don't have a particular favorite. Different subjects require different academic mindsets and I most enjoy exploring potential approaches and finding success in that process. How would you describe your teaching philosophy and your tutoring style? My personal teaching philosophy and tutoring style revolves around the idea: "You can do hard things!" I am comfortable being as hands-on as you would like and need, but my goal is to help others build academic confidence and independence in their own abilities so that they will be better served in the entirety of their academic careers, not just with the subject in which I am tutoring. I work hard with each student to help not only myself but help them assess their strengths and weaknesses for each subject. My approach is not "one size fits all." Instead, I listen carefully to each student and work with them on reviewing and completing their actual school materials and assignments to help them efficiently develop mastery over a subject. What interests you outside of academia? Both inside and outside of academia, I find myself drawn to experiences and opportunities that expand and challenge my worldview. I am always striving to become a better version of myself and deeply value the benefits of introspection and personal growth.

Middle School Math Tutor • +7 Subjects
I am a 2020 graduate of Rice University and currently in my final year of Medical School. Throughout my academic and professional journey, I've found that one of the most rewarding parts of education is helping others reach their potential. I've worked with students across many stages, from high schoolers preparing for the SAT/ACT, to applicants refining personal statements for college and medical school, to medical students tackling board exams. In each of these settings, my goal remains the same: to help students not just learn material but learn how to learn. My teaching philosophy is built on the belief that success doesn't depend on being naturally gifted, it comes from consistency, structure, and a willingness to improve. I work with students to develop individualized study plans, set achievable milestones, and build momentum. I focus on helping students become confident learners who can approach problems with clarity and strategy. Especially in standardized test prep, I emphasize the importance of going into each question with a plan of attack. Whether it's reading comprehension, a science passage, or a medical vignette, I teach students how to prioritize information, filter out distractions, and apply what they know efficiently. Test-taking is a skill, and through consistent practice, students can go from feeling overwhelmed to feeling in control. I'm especially passionate about tutoring subjects that require strategic thinking, like exam prep, because it allows me to show students how much of academic success is not about memorizing facts, but about mastering the process. My ultimate goal is to help students become independent, confident thinkers who can take these skills beyond any one test or class.
