Champion, then, of scholars' growth both individually and communally/collaboratively, I guide them to learn where, when, how and why to take control individually and when to trust the team. At the core of my methodology is the ability to listen: My students, then, can become adepts at PEARLS (Partnership, Empathy, Apology/Acknowledgment, Respect, Legitimation, and Support), not only "listening to" but "hearing" interlocutors in this increasingly multi-vocal/valent world. Consequently equitable, suitable, ethical and sustainable solutions with clear benefits for all stakeholders in the learning transaction can emerge. I have tutored intermittently, primarily teaching test prep; however, I have at different points taught most everything. Here in the Houston area, I've worked with Testmasters, C2 Education and Test Geek. I implement the Socratic Method into my teaching style: I ask plenty of questions that force students to deeply understand the material and to explain how they know why their answer is correct or not. I also believe it is my duty to equip students with tools to become better learners themselves which entails welcoming unique and creative approaches to solving problems, encouraging students to connect the relationships between different topics and subjects, and recommending using external sources and materials to learn and supplement understanding. I'm a writer and editor with a passion for learning that I love to share -- I've been told my tag line should be "let's find out!" I'm a native Austinite, but I lived in New York while I got my Bachelor's in Comparative Literature and minored in Linguistics. After I graduated I moved back home to Austin and got my Masters in Global Policy Studies at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at UT. Now I'm in Fort Worth, with an MBA I picked up along the way (also from UT Austin) -- apparently I can't stay out of school for long.

I am a graduate of University of Delaware, where I studied Anthropology and Theatre Performance. I have tutored extensively in math subjects (including SAT/ACT prep) which I have always enjoyed, being the son of a math professor. I have worked in various capacities as a math tutor/teacher, including at the Prefreshman Engineering Program, a summer camp in San Antonio, TX where I taught and mentored middle and high school students in math, science, and engineering topics. I have also tutored extensively in the San Antonio area (which is my hometown!). I emphasize understanding any material from multiple perspectives, which results in a sophisticated mastery of the content and allows students to feel comfortable with what they are learning, both in tutoring sessions and in the classroom. Whenever I tutor for test prep, my philosophy is to teach the material that the test is supposed to be testing, instead of teaching to the test. In addition to being a tutor, I am an actor, a long-distance runner, and an ultimate frisbee fan.

I'm currently attending Rice University- pursuing a double major Bachelor of Arts in Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Economics. As you can probably tell I'm very passionate about math, and I'm even more passionate about teaching it! I prefer to teach math a little differently than some of you may used to. Many of students think of math as a plug and chug approach- simply being given formulas and plugging numbers in. While I will give you the formulas and critical things to remember if you insist on it, I prefer to teach mathematics as a form of problem solving. How math works is a beautiful thought process- understanding how a formula was conceived is much more rewarding than simply memorizing it. But in the end it's all up to you- the student. If you want a fast run-down of everything you need to know to ace the test- I'll happily help you. However, if you're willing to think outside of the box and learn some very neat stuff, I'll open the doors to mathematical problem solving for you!
