I earned my Bachelor’s degree from Texas Southern University in Psychology, and am presently working on my Master’s degree in School Counseling at Capella University. I tutor students in Math from the elementary level through Algebra 1. I enjoy tutoring in math because it is often a subject that students dislike, and through working with them I have been able to help many appreciate that math is needed every day, and is not as daunting as it seems. When I was in school, I didn’t know how to ask for help when I was having trouble understanding the information we were learning. I still managed to earn high grades every year, but there were several moments of self-doubt and fear of being perceived as incompetent for asking for help. As I began tutoring during my undergraduate studies, I realized that those negative thoughts were silly and there is no shame in seeking help when you don’t have the answers. When I work with students, I do my best to build their confidence in the subject area through practice and positive affirmations, and encourage them to ask any questions they may have. I never want my students to feel like they cannot or should not ask for help when they need it most.

I am a state certified music educator with 30 years of experience in the public-school setting. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Music Education-emphasis in Piano and Voice (Texas Southern University-Houston, TX), a Master of Liberal Arts (University of St. Thomas-Houston, TX) and a Master of Divinity (Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University-Dallas, TX).In addition to teaching general music, I have been a middle and high school choir director, a private piano and voice instructor and a church choir director and musician. During my time in all positions, I have created effective age-appropriate teaching tools and lessons based on state guidelines and employer expectations.I am highly motivated by my strong desire to create an exceptional musical experience for children and adults. In my approach to private instruction, I am always intersted in learning as much as possible about the intellectual needs, the personal motivation and the musical potential of my students. This knowledge allows me to create a specialized program for each student that will ensure success. While much of my time has been spent educating others and developing my musical skills and spiritual life, I have not been alone on this journey. I share space in Texas with my husband of 24 years, our two college-aged children and two very demanding felines.
As a native Houstonian, I am a proud product of the Houston Independent School District. Many of my best childhood memories occurred within the walls of Herod ElementarySchool, Sharpstown Middle School, and Lamar High School. I attended Texas SouthernUniversity's honors program majoring in Biology and am now a graduate student at theUniversity of Houston-Victoria studying Biomedical Science and Film. My mother, asmall-business owner/educator and my father, an electrical engineer instilled the value ofeducation in me at an early age. I learned a lot of my teaching style from them; patience, repetition, organization, and motivation to name a few. I began tutoring my cousins inmy youth who struggled with math, science, or english. In college, this continued as Itutored underclassmen in the biological sciences, organic chemistry, algebra, and writing. After graduation, I had a natural inclination to service students in the classroom as a highschool biology teacher for two years in HISD. Now, as I continue to pursue my academicendeavors in graduate school, I wish to be able to tutor and share my unique experienceswith our youth in hopes of enlightening their perspective of academia and life in general.I am fun loving, personable, and can relate to the younger generation through variouscommonalities; school, sports, music, social media and more. I look forward to meeting youand your child and taking his/her progress to the next level!
What makes me passionate about tutoring are the priceless "ah-ha" moments when a student, who once thought learning math was hopeless, realizes that anything is possible with a little concentration. Although content mastery is very important, there is nothing quite like the positive reinforcement of confidence building when trying to conquer a difficult task. I encourage my students to celebrate the small wins and use the momentum to steam roll the next obstacle. My goal is to remind my client that he/she can conquer anything with the right mindset, and, through the application of mathematics, we shift the mindset from doubtful to unstoppable.
