I am originally from San Antonio, TX; I completed my undergraduate education at Rice University in Houston where I received a bachelor's degree in Biochemistry and Cell Biology. Currently, I am in my second year of medical school at Baylor College of Medicine.

I am an undergraduate at Rice University, and my favorite subjects to tutor are math and science. I also enjoy doing test prep, and my experience comes from helping fellow students in high school. One of the most important aspects of tutoring is fitting the teaching style to each student. One method that works great for one student may not work well for another. Tutoring is all about coming up with different ways for my students to understand the material. If my student is not interested in the subject we are learning, I will try to find a way to tie in their interests and passions into the subject to better engage them. I want to be there for my students, not only as a tutor, but also as a friend. In addition to my interests in math and science (and learning in general), I enjoy swimming, biking, reading, and cooking. Here in the Houston area, I've worked with Testmasters, C2 Education and Test Geek. I implement the Socratic Method into my teaching style: I ask plenty of questions that force students to deeply understand the material and to explain how they know why their answer is correct or not. I also believe it is my duty to equip students with tools to become better learners themselves which entails welcoming unique and creative approaches to solving problems, encouraging students to connect the relationships between different topics and subjects, and recommending using external sources and materials to learn and supplement understanding. Champion, then, of scholars' growth both individually and communally/collaboratively, I guide them to learn where, when, how and why to take control individually and when to trust the team. At the core of my methodology is the ability to listen: My students, then, can become adepts at PEARLS (Partnership, Empathy, Apology/Acknowledgment, Respect, Legitimation, and Support), not only "listening to" but "hearing" interlocutors in this increasingly multi-vocal/valent world. Consequently equitable, suitable, ethical and sustainable solutions with clear benefits for all stakeholders in the learning transaction can emerge. And because "we" this includes me the Champion and Guide willingly created this result, "we/they" willingly accept and acknowledge the outcome, willingly "owning it." It is "our buck."

I am Tegan, an undergraduate at Rice University majoring in Biosciences on the pre-med track. Throughout high school and college, I have realized that the key to a successful academic career is having educators that are truly invested in a student's education. Enthusiastic instructors created exciting and engaging lessons which led to more motivated students. With my experience tutoring middle school students and adult ESL learners, I aimed to be patient with student concerns and hold a positive attitude while teaching, embodying the supportive culture I thrived in. During tutoring sessions, I hope to instill in students confidence in the material and to take ownership of their learning.

I am a graduate of University of Delaware, where I studied Anthropology and Theatre Performance. I have tutored extensively in math subjects (including SAT/ACT prep) which I have always enjoyed, being the son of a math professor. I have worked in various capacities as a math tutor/teacher, including at the Prefreshman Engineering Program, a summer camp in San Antonio, TX where I taught and mentored middle and high school students in math, science, and engineering topics. I have also tutored extensively in the San Antonio area (which is my hometown!). I emphasize understanding any material from multiple perspectives, which results in a sophisticated mastery of the content and allows students to feel comfortable with what they are learning, both in tutoring sessions and in the classroom. Whenever I tutor for test prep, my philosophy is to teach the material that the test is supposed to be testing, instead of teaching to the test. In addition to being a tutor, I am an actor, a long-distance runner, and an ultimate frisbee fan.
