"Failure is not the opposite of success, it's part of success." -Arianna Huffington

My portfolio management professor explained on the first day of class that he taught to constantly learn the subject through new lenses. I teach with passion and enthusiasm to learn alongside those I tutor.
I strive to learn new things every day. I graduated from the University of North Texas two years ago, and I find myself drawn to learning environments and seeking out new knowledge. Possessing a curious mind has lead me to many opportunities to not only learn more, but to teach others as well. I think there is nothing better than seeing someone's face light up with understanding, finally reaching that "ah-ha" moment, and being a part of that just makes it all the better. I have experience tutoring groups of students in US History, Art History, and German. I have the most experience in both German and History tutoring. I am conversational in German and constantly read novels that are written in German. As for History, I tutored with my university for five semesters, and created different activities that were later incorporated to the program. Art History is a personal favorite of mine and it is one of the two degrees I hold, the other being Anthropology.Having taught many different types of people, I learned that there is no one way to teach someone. Everyone learns differently and it is important to find out the learning style that fits each student, while still being able to have fun. When working with groups this can be hard at times, different people will learn at different paces, and so it is always important to remember to keep everyone interested and paying attention. Creating activities for a group atmosphere is something that I have a lot of experience with and excel at. Lastly, I believe that one of the most important things to keep in mind is relating the information back to the students interests, keeping them motivated and excited to learn more.
I've worked for many years as an engineer in the semiconductor industry, with a break of eight years to teach high school chemistry, physics, and math, and returning to the semiconductor industry. In high school and college I was the student who got the right answer (most of the time) but didn't really understand why it was the right answer. Although getting the right answer is important and satisfying, knowing why the answer is right (or not right) is frequently more important to a promising student than the "who/what/how", and I can help you understand all of those.
With a Bachelor's degree in psychology, a minor in anthropology, and a Master's degree in English--specifically, creative writing--more specifically, fiction--I have developed a broad and interdisciplinary knowledge base. This experience allows me to help a wide range of fellow travelers navigate their way along their chosen academic path. This term--fellow traveler--is how I conceive of the relationship between student and tutor: we both come to a given subject with varying degrees of knowledge and experience, and I try to lend mine in helping students find their own answers and understanding of their given subjects or tasks. I teach writing at the college level, but I also have several years of experience in 1-on-1 tutoring in a number of subjects, including preparation for the SAT, ACT, and ISEE tests in math and science, as well as in the humanities, social sciences, reading, writing, and grammar. While I can tutor in many different subjects, my favorite subject to tutor is English, particularly reading and writing. A little-known secret is that reading is a lot of fun, but this can get lost in the process of teaching it. I try to find a way to connect whatever I am reading to my own life, or, more importantly, to your life. Whenever we can make such a connection with the author, our reading becomes deeper and more relevant to our own lives. As for writing, this is an extension of one's thinking, so learning how to write with proficiency also means learning how to think with proficiency. Writing is a big subject, however, and becoming proficient can be a lifelong process. I take this approach into my tutoring. We can focus on basic grammar or advanced rhetorical choices, but in every case, I try to help you develop a foundation from which to continue develop your writing. In my free time, I enjoy playing cards (poker and bridge, in particular), playing the guitar and/or bass guitar, and writing fiction. In addition, I like to play video games and watch basketball and American grid-iron football--my love for the Dallas Cowboys is deep and abiding.Contact me for help with test preparation or studying your subject.
I am a composer and pianist currently living in Tucson, AZ. My experience in teaching both academic and performing arts curricula as a graduate student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst helped me develop a teaching style that focuses on experiential learning and personal communication, asking questions and allowing students to explore new ways of thinking while attempting to facilitate creative and critical approaches to learning. As a former homeschooled student, I have been able to develop strong organizational and independent study skills that I hope to share with my students, and as a musician and improviser I value and encourage creative thinking and curiosity in my approach to teaching and learning.
I am a graduate of both Stephen F. Austin State University and the University of North Texas. I received my Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies with a minor in Reading from SFASU, and my Master of Arts in Elementary Education with a minor in Special Education from UNT. Then I went on to complete an additional 33 hours in Change Leadership at UNT in order to obtain my Educational Leadership certification. Currently, I have the following Texas teaching certifications: 1-8 All Subjects 1-8 Reading PK-4 All Subjects EC-12 Special Education EC-12 Principal I have been in the field of education in Texas for years. The first 8 years of my career were as a classroom teacher in Plano ISD; then I moved into leadership, serving as an Assistant Principal Principal, Coordinator, and Director at various public, charter, and private schools. Throughout my career, I have been dedicated to serving students and families of under-represented and disadvantaged populations. Currently, I am working as a Contractor/Consultant with various schools to support professional development, compliance activities, tutoring, and staffing. At this time, I am tutoring English Language Arts & Reading to students in grades 2-6 and Math to students in grade 2. In the past, I have tutored students in grades 1-10. While I am able and willing to tutor a broad range of subjects and grades, I am most passionate about English Language Arts & Reading, Special Education, and English as a Second Language/Emergent Bilingual in the elementary and middle school grades. Teaching Math, Science, and Social Studies can be delightful fun as well though, especially Science! While more than half of my career has been in leadership roles, I have never deterred from my primary goal: To make a positive difference in the lives of students, teachers, and families. I continually strive to meet this goal, directly-through tutoring and family advocacy, and indirectly-by supporting organizations in meeting state and federal requirements as well as in meeting diverse student needs. I measure personal efficacy and worth by how much I have contributed toward that goal each year. I firmly believe that education is the answer to all of the problems and conflicts in the world, and I am passionate about making a positive impact. Philosophically, I believe in creating strong relationships, in facilitating life-long learning and a growth mindset, in building resilience, perseverance, and confidence, and in helping others to experience the joy of learning and growing. On a personal note, I am the mother of three children: Twin boys who are 18 years old, and a daughter who is 19 years old. I have been married 25 years to a brilliant and kind biologist. We enjoy spending time together and with our large extended family across the DFW metroplex.
I am a native Spanish speaker specializing in Conversational Spanish with over five years of tutoring experience. I focus on using common phrases and verbs instead of focusing on grammar rules.
I am a graduate of the University of North Texas, where I received my Bachelor of Business Administration with a focus in Finance and Financial Services. Upon graduation, I began working in the mortgage industry as a Loan Officer and later as a Mortgage Broker. After a successful career in the Finance Industry, I decided to pursue my other passion in Computer Science, and began working for Fortune 500 companies such as Dell and IBM as a Network Software Engineer. I should mention that I have my certifications in A+, Network+, CompTIA IT Operations Specialist CIOS Stackable, MCP, IBM AIX, and AWS Cloud Practitioner and AWS Solutions Architect Associate . A few years later, I caught the travel bug and decided that I wanted to travel and teach English, so I obtained my TESL Certification from Oxford Seminars at the University of St. Edwards in Austin, Texas and moved to Taiwan where I began my ESL teaching career, where I taught ages 7 to 22 years old. During my time in Taiwan, I was awarded a scholarship for a 1-year Intensive Mandarin course. In addition to Taiwan, I have lived and worked in Guatemala, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Peru, and I am fluent in Spanish. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, my primary focus is on professional certifications such as A+, Network+, AWS; however, I also help prepare for students with TOEFL and SAT entrance exams, as well as helping foreign business professionals improve their Business and Legal English. I am also a Business and Marketing Strategist and Consultant with over 15 years of experience. I am passionate about helping students achieve the success they desire and helping them overcome the barriers that prevent them from having that success. In my experience, success is determined not by what talents or skills you may have, but how much time and effort you are willing to put into mastering those desired skills. As stated by the "10,000 Hour Rule" by Malcolm Gladwell, only after you have dedicated yourself to 10,000 hours of work towards a specific skill can you become a master at it. In my experience, I find this to be true with myself and with my students. Outside of teaching, I practice meditation, yoga, and exercise daily as a self-discipline. I also enjoy cooking, traveling, reading, writing, learning new languages, nature hikes, waterfalls, Permaculture, Finance/Investing/Cryptocurrency, and taking care of my two beautiful dogs. I am focused constant personal development and I am dedicated towards constant self-improvement. If you are ready to take the steps towards improving your own personal development to achieve the success you desire, schedule a class today and I will help you on your path to success.

I am knowledgeable in many subjects, but the ones I am most passionate about are English and study skills. I am a firm believer in the idea that being able to communicate and organize ideas coherently is the most important skill a person can learn, and it is a lifelong process. My favorite part of tutoring is being able to witness my students' development as people while they expand their minds and discover new and exciting opportunities.

I believe every person is like a diamond with many facets to allow them to shine. Each person has a spec in them that makes them unique. These flaws can sometimes catapult us into the fourth dimension by making us more compassionate, understanding individuals. Dyslexia runs in my family, so I sought out a multisensory way to teach highly intelligent people who learn differently how to gain access to the knowledge they crave through print. In the upper grades, it is my mission to introduce students to a genre, author, or series that interests them in order to help them feel comfortable and enjoy reading. There is a whole new world out there in books, podcasts, audible books, etc. that will enable readers to gain access to new knowledge. It is my pleasure to stand along side of students to help them gain open the door to this new and wonderful place!
Learning occurs when a student is in a safe, comfortable environment where they feel respected and engaged. As a teacher, I pride myself on ensuring that every student in my classroom feels like they have a voice, and that their voice is important. A student should never feel ashamed or afraid to express their opinion. When I teach, I start with a passionate approach to the material. I love Language Arts and strive to garner as much knowledge about the material as I can so that I can present true and credible information to my students. I then determine the most exciting way to convey the material so that each student is engaged. I learn as much as I can about the student's interests, passions, and hobbies, so that I can create analogies to their lives and impart the information in such a way that they can apply it to what they already know and care about. I believe that this method contributes to long term retention. My goal is, not only for my class to do well on standardized exams, but to carry a lifelong passion for learning and for the material that I've presented them. I feel an enormous sense of pride when I know that I've made a difference in a student's life. I want my students to see the importance of education and value in the betterment of themselves and their community.I believe that test scores don't tell the entire story of a student's progress, but an overview of the student as a whole is important to measure learning. How has the student progressed in the classroom? Have they shown a new interest in the subject? Have they volunteered more information about themselves over the course of a semester? Are they willing to participate in class discussion, whereas, before they were quiet? These are all questions I ask myself and measures I use to determine if I am teaching effectively. I believe in always working to become a better teacher and person. Therefore, I am always measuring my progress as well as the student's, and asking myself what I can do to become better at my job. One of the best ways for me to be a better teacher is to learn from my students.I embrace technology in my classroom and want the students to be excited about Language Arts as it applies to the world in which they operate. Social Media, blogging, and the internet in general are important spheres for education, and I like to make a connection to technology and the subject matter in which I'm teaching so that students are excited to see the application.
In the 1970’s I attended Southern Methodist University for two years to pursue a degree in the Philosophy of Religion. It was fascinating at the time, however, I have little interest in pursuing that topic. I am grateful to have that knowledge as it is very useful for the study of history. Then I quit to become a working Jazz guitar player. I received a degree in Jazz Performance from the University of North Texas. My great passion is Classical History. I study History to understand human. As Thucydides said, “Human nature does not change”.Roman history is so fascinating. A person can’t master all the different periods of Roman History. We see ourselves in them; we see them in us. We see their influence in many areas of our society. To understand the modern world, it is critical to understand the classical world. I a currently writing a Master’s Thesis on the rise and development of Roman autocracy at the university of Dallas.I also have a great love of Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity. As they two most successful scientific paradigms of the 20th Century, they are fantastic standards for evaluating our use of language. With these paradigms, we see how we use language and language colors and influences us.

Writing is a passion of mine and I believe that anyone can be a good writer, it's only a matter of understanding your own ideas and transferring them to paper. My teaching style is very learner-focused. As a teacher, my job is to guide my students as they solve problems and overcome challenges and I will use whatever strategies best suit my students' individual learning style. I also implement Growth Mindset strategies, which are based on the idea that our abilities can change based on our efforts. In other words, if you work at it, you will get better at it!I look forward to working with you and helping you to be successful!

Making learning come to life, so that it will not only stick in the student brain, but so they can use it in their everyday life. Going through school as a pre-med student, has taught me a lot when it comes to learning. You can't only rely on memorizing facts, but you have to be able to learn and comprehend facts. That's what I try to teach my students.

I found that helping other students get back on track with their studies gave me a lot of fulfillment. I found that I felt especially fulfilled when I could see the learner have their "Aha!" moment. Seeing the sparkle in their eye as it all clicked together made tutoring worth every second. At the UNT Learning Center, I was trained in Bloom's taxonomy and Andragogic learning principles. This means that my tutoring style caters to learners seeking to become independent in their learning. It is my mission to tutor people so they won't need me anymore.
